Each year, the National Weather Service and individuals across the nation take part in the SKYWARN Recognition Day. This year marks the 10th annual event and will continue to make an effort to help people understand SKYWARN. Everyday, millions of people tune into their local news station for the latest weather, but what a lot of people don't know is that there are thousands of volunteers across the nation that provide what is called a "ground truth" report (eyes on report) when there is severe weather.

Even with all the technology that we have today, without these ground truth reports, there is a lot of information that we would not have regarding active weather events. A radar might show signs of a tornado, but without eyewitness reports, it will not be known if it really is happening or not. That is where SKYWARN volunteers come into play.
