MST3K: The Show That Turned the Mockery Into the Message »
Posted By Wil 1 year, 1 month ago in Arts & EntertainmentTwenty years after the debut of “MST3K” (with a new DVD boxed set from Shout! Factory to celebrate the occasion), the show’s creators talk about the show as if it were a mad scientist’s experiment, one that could have been produced only under a precise set of conditions that are practically irreproducible today.

I remember the first time I saw MST3K. I was at a friend's house, surfing through channels as fast as I could, and when she saw the shadows of Joel and the Bots on the screen, she ripped the remote from my hand.

"You have to watch this show," she said. "You're going to love it. They watch cheesy movies and make jokes all the way through."
My friends and I started watching it every weekend, complete with viewing parties. It became one of the most influential shows I'd ever watched, informing and inspiring much of my sense of humor as an adult. To this day, I still heed Joel's philosophy on obscure references: "I don't wonder if anyone will get this, I know that the right people will get this." -

I was one of the lucky ones to see it on local TV before it got picked up. At the time, I just wanted them to shut the hell up, don't they know this is a Godzilla movie? I blame my 7-year-old-ity.

We interviewed Trace Beaulieu (Dr. Forrester/Crow T. Robot) on our show, he had some cool stuff to say about MST3k and his new project Cinematic Titanic.

It's so funny that a show that got so neglected on every networked it aired on (and even got a further-neglected theatrical movie) could've been so damn influential. I mean, Everybody Loves Raymond made a zillion dollars, but it never introduced a new verb into the world's vocabulary.

Now, anytime someone makes a smart-ass comment during a movie, it's considered "MS3TK-ing it" or "going all Mystery Science Theater." It's just so odd that it was so influential yet remains this decidedly cult phenomenon.
Kinda off-topic - did anyone see the Cheap Seats episode where the MS3TK guys showed up to basically give them **** for stealing their format? It was great.
