    I remember the first time I saw MST3K. I was at a friend's house, surfing through channels as fast as I could, and when she saw the shadows of Joel and the Bots on the screen, she ripped the remote from my hand.

    "You have to watch this show," she said. "You're going to love it. They watch cheesy movies and make jokes all the way through."

    My friends and I started watching it every weekend, complete with viewing parties. It became one of the most influential shows I'd ever watched, informing and inspiring much of my sense of humor as an adult. To this day, I still heed Joel's philosophy on obscure references: "I don't wonder if anyone will get this, I know that the right people will get this."
