That state’s Proposed Initiative Act No. 1, approved by nearly 57 percent of voters last week, bans people who are “cohabitating outside a valid marriage” from serving as foster parents or adopting children.

"Even before the law passed, the state estimated that it had only about a quarter of the foster parents it needed. Beginning on Jan. 1, a grandmother in Arkansas cohabitating with her opposite-sex partner because marrying might reduce their pension benefits is barred from taking in her own grandchild; a gay man living with his male partner cannot adopt his deceased sister’s children."
No matter how stupid our legislators can be, voter initiatives are often worse. -

Sorry. I am two days late but, as they say, better late than never.

I am a recent resident of the very strange state of Arkansas. I am also one of the voters on this initiative. I read it while standing in line to vote, and while I understood completely what the bill meant, I can assure you that most people didn't. The majority of the voters here are poorly educated and the proposition was presented using legal terminology. It was brief and very vague.
If the voters here understood the full meaning of what this bill was going to do to their families, I can assure you that it NEVER would have passed. I feel as if the voters here were duped. The legislators know how ignorant their constituents are. In addition, there is very little reporting on matters like this. There really isn't anyone to explain these things to them except for their preachers, and we all know how he told them to vote.
People, if you don't fully understand what you're voting for, vote it down. It can always be presented at a later date and that way you'll have time to do more research on it. And PLEASE! Don't take the preachers word for it. He/She doesn't always have your best interests at heart.
