So why don't the employees buy the company and exercise their ideas?

Failure should not be an option. It is lack of imagination. If a company depends on stealing good ideas from successful companies, then bye bye. However, if the company is made up of creative talent, then selling out in a downturn is showing a lack of imagination or innovation. Essentially, they were only in it for the money then. That's why I hate CFO led companies.
