i have a question concerning the whole homosexual marriage vs heterosexual marriage issue. is it the word marriage, or is it the legal recognition that marriage has but civil unions does not?
Reply
if equal rights were given civil unions as marriages where in the eyes of the law and in all aspects of society, and the word "marriage" is saved only for heterosexual unions does this argument go away? is this a legal/equal rights argument or is this a petty issue over the word "marriage"? i dont mean to sound offensive but it seems to me it is more about the word "marriage" than an equal rights issue. it just seems like both sides are arguing more over the use of the word "marriage" than any legal issues. what is the difference between civil union and marriage that is the big issue?-

Good question. The gay community keeps saying its about 'rights'. So the impression I get, correct me if I'm wrong, is that if the state does not recognize your marriage as it's legally defined by law, you do not have the rights that come with a marriage. For instance, you can be compelled to testify against your partner in a criminal trial. You don't have a right to alimony if separated (divorced). You may not be entitled to death benefits of a spouse. If children are involved custody guidelines no longer apply. These are some rights a gay couple will be denied because they don't meet the criteria of a "legal" marriage which now is defined as between man AND woman in California thanks to prop 8. That being said I'm sure Prop 8 is in direct conflict with the Fourth Amendment (equal protection under the law). Supposedly the U.S Constitution trumps state law so we will see.

With Americans being called prudes and frigid around the world why so much interest in what happens inside the bedroom? It is ridiculous. Gay people have been around for millennia and will continue to be around. So grow up, Gladys. er. Mormon church.

There is nothing hateful or bigoted about opposing one group's attempt to hijack the meaning of a term that has stood for thousands of years cutting across all social, political, economic, religious, and cultural fault lines.
Reply
If there is some "right" at issue here, then it can only be assumed that the gays of the 70s and 80s were mentallly deficient for failing to note its absence.
You want an alternative lifestyle? Create yourselves an alternative term. Ours is spoken for. We like it just the way it always has been and always will be. And for godsakes stop calling us homophobes. California has been the most gay-friendly state for an entire generation. Merely because you don't get everything you want when you want it the way you want it does not mean anyone in opposition to your every whim hates you.-

In my mind, the Mormon church is a cult. But really, the tension on this issue goes much much further than just the zealotry of the Mormons...
Many of the fundamentalists would probably question my faith because I accept that I am gay without repentance. Still others may question my beliefs because I don't find it necessary proselytize my faith. ...or because I'm one of those "bleeding-heart liberal" Episcopalians! {gasp!) ....or that I'm a Christian whom is actually walking the walk when it comes to poverty, social justice, and being a good steward of the planet. And on "witnessing" one's faith: If one is truly Christ-like, the best "witness" is living life helping others in the name of God....not talking about it.
But I have this question when they say my sexual orientation is a "choice": When DID you "choose" to be straight (Of course, a true answer cannot be given because none of them really did)? If if it is not a choice (and from my life experience, I believe to my core that it is not), why deny another human being a chance at happiness?-

I understand people wanting the exact same rights and freedoms, and if it needs to be called the same word for 100% equality then everyone deserves to call it exactly the same. Does a word really define your marriage? Realistically it only matters to the gov.
Reply
Besides, nobody owns a word, it's up to each individual to define their own marriage, it's already defined legally, how can anyone personally define someone else's? or have a right to do that? minus the age of consent and blood relative, no heterosexual is told who they can or cannot marry or what they do in their bedrooms, it's nobody else's business except the couples. If the gov hands out any special privileges and legal rights to married couples, and married couples got married because they fell in love and want to be committed to each other, the same has to be given to Homosexuals.
There are many homosexual couples right now, who consider themselves married and call themselves married, the only difference is the gov is not recognizing them. that I think is their only concern, for equal rights, they don't care if you personally recognize them, you didn't need their approval and they shouldn't need yours.
'You're using my word, they took our word, it's not the same'....silly!
Are you afraid someone will ask you if you are married to same sex???
grow up and concern yourself with your own marriage. -

There are clinical studies that document pederasts who have never known any kind of sexual attraction for anyone other than chidren. Likewise serial rapists for whom nothing but nonconsensual sex appeals. And yes, there are lots of gays who make the same claim you do.
The fact is, human sexuality is a powerful force that must find an outlet. Like a high-tension wire, it is fraught with danger, but when properly harnessed and channeled has tremendous utility. Mishandled, it is a hazard. Likewise human sexuality, it can find any combination of expressions. One's upbringing, environment, and focus will determine his or her stimulus or release pattern. Repetition conditions the brain to seek similar contexts for similar pleasurable outcomes.
I am not putting homosexuals on the same moral plane as pederasts and rapists. I work in a profession (taxation) in which one lives or dies by his ethical standards, and some of the best I've worked with have been gays who are value-added, hard-working practitioners. My point is that conditioning and environment play a role in one's sexual orientation. Everything I've said can be found in medical texts, yet the medical community will betray its own research for the sake of political correctness.
Anyway...I believe we can disagree on this and still engage each other with mutual respect.

It's really silly. How is this going to be enforced? If a gay couple united in a civil union call themselves 'married', what, are you going to fine them? Send them to jail? Will forms have to be changed to say both 'Married' and 'Civilly United'? Will a gay couple get a ticket if they check 'Married'? Will I get fined if I say I am attending a gay couple's 'wedding'?
Reply
Can civilly united gay couples call each other husband and wife, or are those 'straight-people-only words' too?
What about spouse? I guess not, since the 'traditional definition' is: "either member of a married pair in relation to the other; one's husband or wife."
OKAY GAYS, NOW LISTEN UP! Here is the list of words so far you cannot use in reference to yourselves, your partners, your union ceremony, or your relationships:
Marriage/Marry/Married
Matrimony
Spouse/Spousal
Wedding/Wedlock/Wedded
Husband/Hubby
Wife/Better Half/Ball and Chain
Nuptial
Bride/Bridal/Bridesmaid
Bridegroom/Groom/Groomsman
Flower Girl/Best Man/Maid of Honor
Widow/Dowager/Widower
Divorce/Divorced/Divorcee
Annulment
Conjugal/Connubial
Engaged/Betrothed
Fiance/Fiancee/My Intended
Adultery/Adulterer
Dowry
Honeymoon
And no, you can't say you are 'M-worded'.-

They can use any term they want, it is when 'legal' issues arise is when the terminology gets serious. You would be surprised how important your list of words become when you find yourself in a courtroom or social security office or a hospital.

Yeah, and they didn't even touch the planet Kolob part! They did a similar skewer of Scientology. Isaac Hayes, a Scientologist, ended up quitting because of that episode, though it's unclear if this was of his own full volition or whether he was pressured by fellow Scientologists (something they are quite well known for).

As I was beginning to type this, a gigantic talking head of Sara Palin formed over my desk and said I was to have 100... 13 year old virgin wives, and lead them into a space ship I was to build to blast off to the planet of giant talking Caribu Barbie heads.

One of the reasons I quit the Mormon church wasn't because it was anti-gay, but, because Indians weren't becoming "white and delightsome". Besides, I had a Paiute Indian friend who liked being BROWN and delightsome, letting me know that things just weren't adding up.

Hey, Mickey, my old childhood friend on the reservation. If you're still alive and reading this, sorry for thinking you'd be happier if you were white. Besides, you'd have looked really funny if you were. Oh the stupid THINGS religion can get you saying or doing! (My friend, Mickey Mix, was a VERY good looking guy. The last time I saw him, though, he had gotten pinned in a wrestling match in 7th grade. It was the fasted pin I had EVER witnessed in wresting. They guy jumped down, grabbed his legs together, tossed him to the side and pinned him all in about three seconds. I won't name who pinned him, because, the guy who pinned him was quite a bullying bastard).
