Group sues Colorado governor over “Day of Prayer” »
Posted By ekklesiawarrior 7 months, 3 weeks ago in ReligionThe Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has sued Gov. Bill Ritter and the state of Colorado to end its designation of a state- sanctioned official “Day of Prayer,” which took place in 2007 and again on May 1, 2008.
“Gov. Ritter’s proclamations of a Day of Prayer violate the religious- freedom clause of the state constitution by endorsing religion over nonreligion,” alleges the complaint filed Wednesday in Denver District Court. About 70 events were held in the state to commemorate the day, including an event at the state Capitol.

Not really.

There's no question here. A day of non-denominational prayer does not violate the establishment clause. Because it's not establishing a state religion or a preference of religion. Unless all those atheists now are going to say that they follow a religion?
One could possibly argue over the word 'prayer,' however as not every tradition calls what they do 'prayer.'

Religion just basically adds rules to faith. You can have faith that God exists and believe in the bible and the stories of Jesus without having to go to church and add rules and regulations to it. Organized religion has become a standard that needs to be looked at. A personal relationship with God doesn't require a place to share it with others or money.

All you say is true but faith is not limited to god, my faith is in mankind.. Sure some people are not good people but my faith tells me as a race people do care about those around them and put in the situation of helping their fellow man they do. As times have gotten harder the numbers of volunteers are higher and that validates my faith in people.

This is ridiculous and shows non tolerance from the side of those atheists.

Being raised Catholic, having been educated in Catholic schools (including university), I am, since very long, by choice, a fervent atheist.
However, if I fight the intolerance of a lot of religious people, I should be tolerant my self.
So, what's wrong with a "day of prayer"??
It doesn't say, you HAVE to pray.
It doesn't say to what God you should pray (Yahweh, God the Father, Christ, Mohamed, Poseidon, Venus, Fortuna, Bacchus, some Celtic God, etc ....)
It doesn't even say if your prayer has to be to any God at all: some times I pray my wife to let me ... whatever...(lol)
Pray can also mean just thinking, reflecting about, e.g. your live, other people, the world, injustice ,....
On top of that, the Western world, is, for the greatest part, of Greco - Roman - Judeo/Christian background and philosophy.
So even if you are non Christian (and or Atheist, like me) what's wrong in words as prayer, Merry Christmas, Happy Eastern... Those are part of my heritage (in the Western world) I take those in the wider sense of the words or days.-

It's the state sanctioning part. That's the problem.

And there is a certain irony, that Cons get upset about nanny government getting involved with curbing pollution that businesses want to dump in our streams and air, but are fine with nanny government telling people to pray.
But that's just a bonus. -

RELIGION comes from he Latin term meaning 'to cover', 'an act of covering'

Adam and Eve hid naked in the Garden covered with a fig leaf.
Before GOD Almighty many cover themselves with various allures and venues. It is as such the likes of these scream about a time set aside, volunteer to a time of prayer. If these do not believe, what is the threat?

Everyone knows Ritter is just an in-your-face adherent of organized religion. It shouldn't be state-sanctioned as it stands. They could call it something inclusive that could open it to all religions, agnostics, and atheists, but he does not--on purpose.
