The economic downturn triggered by the worst financial crisis in decades is sending more Americans to food banks. But the crisis has also cut donations from companies and individuals, according to a survey for Feeding America, the largest U.S. relief organization.

In these bad economic times that we're going through, things are hurting food banks worse if not just as bad. Hopefully, something will be done to alleviate this daunting situation.

This is a good story, soon they well probly be doing away with the food banks because the cost of food, and the more people who goes it just gets harder for people to buy food for the food bank and for themselfs. But if anyone ever came to me hungery, I would do my best to make sure they were not hungery when they left. I cant stand the thought of someone going to bed hungery. very good story.

My sister in law works at a safe-injection site. The only one in North America. Everything I don't need or use gets donated to there.

I once heard that if a person went to the back door of a restaurant and said they were hungry the restaurant was obliged to give them something to eat...even if it was just some bread. This doesn't seem logical or even legal but I'm curious if anyone else has ever heard this. I've also heard something along the same lines regarding giving water to someone who may come to your door, even if it's just pointing them to the garden hose. It sounds odd, but has anyone else ever heard of anything like this? It was many years ago when the homeless population was much smaller so it seemed a little more plausible at the time. Now it would seem that it could put a restaurant quickly out of business if true.

That used to be the ethic, I think. Never a law, just something that kind, caring people did.

I sure as hell would never refuse water to someone who was thirsty. And I would feed them if I could.

And then I would hand them some seeds, and lead them to a vacant lot....

pinky --Don't think that this was law; but probably something that many came to expect. I have one son who works at an upscale restaurant. He observes that they throw out quite a bit of food that maybe could be given to local pantries. But he also notes that there are all sorts of regs on cooked food -- how long it can be stored, how it must be stored, how it must be packed, etc. -- that managment figures it's just easier to pitch it. Another lesson in the law of unintended consequences , I guess.

It's really shameful the amount of food that's thrown away, especially at buffets.

                        chevydog,

There is an organization here in Phoenix that has a refrigerated truck and makes the rounds of participating restaurants each night to pick up the packaged leftover food. They drop it off at food kitchens serving the homeless.

Back in the day when airlines served meals on every flight there was a lot of talk about all of the waste there too. Guess that's not an issue anymore though.

Interesting. I'm out here in MO, so the commute is pretty daunting. But I can pass the idea on to some non-profits I have connections with. Seems like a good one.

I give to our local food bank and meals on wheels. If everyone who can afford to gave locally, our communities and country would be better off.

See that's just it, damn near everyone can afford to give or share something.
And I agree with Natureboy-We should never complain about the idle poor, considering how much it costs us to support the idle rich.
People want to complain about supporting some woman living in low income housing, driving a crappy car if any, eating ramen noodles for dinner, getting sub standard health care, and most likely working hard at a minimum wage job yet turn a blind eye to the millions given to the rich that need help keeping their mansions, luxury cars, boats, dinner parties, top shelf, vacations, best medical care etc...

So the wallstreet people were concerned about their bonuses this year which I think is an average of 138,000 -236,000 per person, they were going to have to lower it by 70%, but with the bailout they only have to lower those bonuses by 30%
I realize there are a lot of wealthy people who give to charities etc....and I don't want to take that feel good moment or tax break for them, but come on, America caters to the wealthy way too much.

I think percentage wise, the 'un' wealthy give more then the wealthy do.

Up here the province of Manitoba is one of the have not provinces and yet you are correct it has the highest level of giving in the country. As the economy continues to tank I think that the next big crisis is going to be the housing and feeding of the people. I left out the word poor in front of people on purpose since alot of problems people are going through is not exclusive to just the poor. This last year has just been a killer on alot of families with inflation taking its toll as well as alll the job losses.

Part of the problem of giving to food banks is all the rules, if you hunt and want to donate meat, it has to have been shot with bow and arrow, no bullets because of "LEAD POISENING" possibility. Resturants do not donate food, because if the people who eat it get sick, even if its the food banks fault , cause they didn't store properly, or for too long, the resturant can get sued. Grocery stores used to give food at the back doors when it came up on last day to sell date, not anymore, cause again they get sued if someone gets sick. I , myself donate all the time, fruit and veggys from my own garden, and some meat, (I raise my own). I pick-up extra toiletrys evertime I go shopping and donate those also. There will come a time when I will no longer be able to do this, due to the economy, but I hope there will be others .
