Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican in Senate history, narrowly lost his re-election bid Tuesday, marking the downfall of a pillar of the U.S. Senate and Alaska icon who apparently couldn't survive his conviction on federal corruption charges. His defeat to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich moves Senate Democrats closer to a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.

I don't know anything about the person running against Steven's, but to have re-elected the felon would make the old adage that crime doesn't pay false.

With Stevens losing am I wrong to assume that the democrats will have a filibuster preventing majority if Franken wins and Chambliss loses??

It makes me wonder what all of those people, who actually voted for Stevens, were thinking. I'M thinking, that they didn't know right from wrong...or care about the difference.

They finally have enough people in Alaska who aren't stoned on weed.

(anyone who knows Alaska knows a little "house stash" is the norm up there)

I wonder what Sarah Palin's chances are now for being a Senator? I guess she can just stare at Russia from her window. It's right over there...see.

It certainly couldn't happen to a more deserving (of a loss) guy. Senator "Bridge to Nowhere" himself. In an election cycle where the Republicans whipped themselves into a slobbering furry over "Pork" this was Mr. Piggy himself.

Talking about the height of Hubris!!!! Putting himself above his party when he knew he would be part of giving the Democratic Party a super majority. Why should anyone vote in a felon? The worse of all is after knowing what kind of damage having too much power in one party can bring about, he will be part of giving the Democrats even more power than the Republicans used to send us into oblivion. All we can do is hope the Democrats don’t do the same thing or worse. We got change now all we can do is hope. I wish I could honestly say I trust the Democrats enough to feel that won’t be the case. Unfortunately, with the people I see Obama is picking I’m not convinced, but I do Hope I’m wrong and the Dems that voted for him hold him a lot more accountable than we on the did our side while we were drunk from victory and squandered the chance.
