The big three tried several times over the years to make smaller cars that got better gas mileage but people wouldn't buy them. They produced what people would buy!...biga$$ guzzlers.

The Union's greed in demanding the lowliest worker make $24 an hour and rediculous benefits while doing shoddy work is, in my opinion, the BIGGEST reason the big 3 never could and never will be able to compete with the imports. Even the imports made in the US are union free. Their employees have voted down the union every year! The reason? The companies treat them like gold. Listen to them. Reward them in ways other than outrageous pay and benefits. They make the worker feel appreciated and valued. The worker returns the favor by doing good work!
Until the unions are busted out of the big 3, it will never change. I would like to say let 'em fail but what about the millions of good people working in other businesses that support the auto industry. Can we really afford another 3 or 4 million people on the unemployment rolls...losing their houses....etc?
I don't know what the answer is but a good start would be throwing out every one of the top executives along with the union. Offer the workers a fair wage and insurance plan, etc.
BTW, the new Chevy Malibu is a great car. I'd consider one over a Toyota Camry but I would be afraid it would be worthless when parts and service were not available for it!

Read my comment of the auto bailout posted by jwojdylo. Here is solution part two.If the three greedy scam artist want help they can merge and with all of there technology's they can retool and build all electric ,flex fuel vehicles under one umbrella making it affordable for all Americans , the government can also chip in and release its patent on the solar rechargeable battery nasa has running on mars and all those patents on steam ,hydro run engines that are currently sealed by congress. Also unions were variable and necessary years ago that is no longer the case now .Labor must have a share in stocks and a vote on all company decisions and management.that is it folks eliminate the middle man and let the american worker excel according to his labor!

Your idea to merge all three into one company has merit. I like your plan EXCEPT giving the unions ANY position in the new company. Have you looked to see what top union Executives make? Just as insulting as the auto execs! In truth, the workers have been screwed by the unions for decades.

Americans between the companies themselves, the vendors, and associated industries. We CANNOT let them fail. Having said that, I think the money should be restricted to urgent recapitalization and R and D into new technologies that they can share-ie new batteries, hybreds, alternative fuels etc.
THIS SHOULD NOT BE A BAILOUT OF THE UAW, WHO TEND TO BE OVERPAID, OVER BENIFITED AND LAZY. IF THEY DON'T HELP WITH THE
SOLUTION THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE MAJOR PART OF THE PROBLEM. IN THAT EVENT,DECERTIFY THE UNION OR ELSE ENCOURAGE THE AUTO COMPANIES TO MOVE TO RIGHT TO WORK STATES DOWN SOUTH. -

There you go boys. Fly into Washington in your private jets, and hold your hand out to the taxpayers. They could do so much to cut waste, it would be unbelievable. If they had to depend om me to buy a new car, they would have been broke years ago. I only buy used cars. Buy them and drive them til they drop.

Not sure I want to see them collapse, but business is business. If they badly need restructuring and a change of business plans, then they should face that just like thousands of smaller businesses do. There's a limit to how much help they taxpayers should be responsible for.

Our UAW gold lined executives are living in prehistoric times with their bull crap contracts and the Auto Makers accepting this **** which shows that they couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag. The suppliers that have been tightening up their belt buckles for thet last ten years due to the fact that these dumb ***** can't pay their bills, and now they want more gold to loine their pockets???????????. you all deserve everything coming to you.

The results of doing nothing will have a terrible domino effect on the entire country-- it Will have an affect on You and ME!!! Too many companies depending on each other! I agree that the products produced by the 3 auto makers were and are junk. We are in a no-win situation. We NEED SOLUTIONS. No need to remind us of the problem!

well I am one of those over paided workers.as a union member I have paided my dues yes maybe we are at a time that neededs change but I get no were near the money the top people get. I feel that the people out there are not awear of the snow ball effect that it will cause for and already damaged eonomy

The GM CEO is making $18 million dollars a year. Ford CEO is making $20 million a year. The GM CEO flew from Detroit, to Washington DC today on one of eight private jets GM owns. The cost of the today's flight, approximately $20K. A first class Northwest airline ticket was less than $900. Why as a taxpayer should I pay for their perks? Their salaries? Let them fold. UAW is wrong for the times. They were once powerful, too powerful. Let them see what the real world is like now.

4 million auto workers. Give them $600 a week for unemployement for 1 year. Equals $2.4B, a lot less than $25B. While we are at it, add another $300 a week to the 16 million currently collecting about $300 a week and that brings us to $7.2B (assume about $4.8B is already being paid to 16M unemployed). That's a whopping $600 a week for 20 million unemployed workers for a year.

Each worker will have the opportunity to train for other employement, find another job or eventually return to a stronger US car company getting out of Chapter 11.
In the end, we have a stronger Auto industry, the unemployed surving a tough econmony for a year, less tax burden. -

Boy you people that keep saying not to help the big three out of this jam should kick yourself right in the rear,If the government and american people would stop trading and buying foreign products and cars we wouldn't be in this situation,sure the big guys in office should not keep getting big bonus checks instead they should be reduced,but if we the americans don't help, what kind of people are we.It would mean that we don't stand behind our country but that we support all those foreign countries who are getting richer off of us.
