Those who support and those who rejected Proposition 8 will now have their chance at proving to the court the merits of their respective arguments. Gays and lesbians want the opportunity to present their case which claims that marriage in all forms is a fundamental and deeply personal right. It is a right so basic, no government entity should be allowed to block it for any reason.

Opponents of gay marriage claim that marriage equality will tear at the very fabric of society and violate traditional values. I disagree with the underlying theories of this premise. First, gays and lesbians, whether one wants to accept their existence or not, are a part of the fabric of life. We do exist, and we will not seek refuge in a closet any longer.

As for traditional values, St. Paul in the Bible talks about slaves needing to follow the commands of their masters. Yet, our nation abolished slavery in 1865, and finally updated our civil rights laws as late as 1964. Traditions can and should change to keep up with societies which recognize injustice and tyranny when it is thrust upon a minority of people. I applaud the justices for following the spirit of the law of fairness and equality in our nation.
