Here's a bunch of thieves sitting on a bunch of million dollar vessels in their port complete with crew members asking millions of dollars in ransom.
I hope they continue sinking their vessels so that this will stop. -

You probably never seen any of my posts where I supported our fight in Afghanistan, did you? And decried Bush's diversion onto Iraq because we should have finished what we started with the Taliban and al Qaeda. And I'm not your typical lib. I support the right to bear arms, death penalty, assisted suicide, fiscal conservatism, rights of women to choose whether or not to have an abortion, universal heath care, gay rights, freedom of speech and I'm tolerant of idiots like you.

If we capture a pirate he is afforded the right of due process but if he's dead, it's not needed. Now do you understand? I'm not advocating killing captured pirates or terrorists. America signed on to the Geneva Convention and I'd like to think America can honor it's commitments and not go off half-cocked and do as I say and not as I do.

The problem is you need people like me. Because I am willing to do the dirty work so guys like you can keep a clear conscience. You need me, but you won't admit it. Saddam needed to go, we got Libyia WMD program without a shot fired, Afghanistan is still a work in progress. This cross border stuff should had happened in a big way years ago. We signed the Geneva convention, but our enemy did not. I don't mean treat them as they treat us. They are treated humanely, but that should not hamstring our interview techinques. This is all part of GWOT and will be for years. I can name half dozen plus countries this encompasses. Today Afghanistan, tomorrow Iraq, next week Somilia, etc. So get use to this. We are going to be do for a while,unless the new President loses his nerve.
So, you stop with the name calling. You may mot like me , I really don't care. But you need me and that is what you hate about the whole thing. I am more then willing to do what needs to done to protect you, me, total strangers and this nation so we (all) can sleep safe in our beds at night.-

You think too highly of yourself and your abilities. I don't need you or want your help and I'd refuse it if I could. But I will quit with the name calling as you've asked. It makes me look smaller and does no good in changing your views. The wars in Vietnam and Iraq had nothing to do with my freedoms nor that of our country. In both wars, only the military industrial complex and pentagon profited, everyone else lost. So if our country's freedom was actually threatened, I'd be one of the first to volunteer to protect and defend our nation and would not rely on you or anyone else to do what I can do myself.

The war in Vietnam was about communist taking over SE Asia. As they tried in Thailand but failed, as they tried in Malayia and failed as they tried in South Korea and failed as they tried in China but was successful. And I am leaving out Sub-Saharan Africa. Iraq had been a problem for years. After 9-11 why wait for a threat to grow. That is how we got here in the first place. These wars were and are a threat to your freedom. You just don't see it. That is why you need me and many like me so we can deal with this threat and you can have a clear conscience. Sleep safe my friend, because I am on guard. And you can come out when or if we have another 9-11. And you can have a clear conscience for what you will need to do.

This piracy has been going on for years.... Why now? Come on... you got 100 million dollars in a KNOWN dangerous area... and you LET WHAT? USA is/was planning to put soldiers in every African nation.

There are a few things I do not understand about some people in the article like saying we can't patrol the area because we don't have enough ships. What I don't understand is why we are searching by ship when we have AWACS planes and sattelites to search. All we need is for the shippers to tell us where they are and if there is some boat that no one claims we then we send a ship there to take a look. Secondly the white house press bimbo wondering if there are actions that can fight piracy while the Indians are busy doing it. The pirates don't care about us because they know we won't do anything because we are not allowed to. Just change the rules of engagement to say that pirate vessels will be destroyed once detected. Finally eliminate the idea of "ransom". They can cut whatever deal they want with the shippers but they are not leaving that vessel alive.

I have been following these pirate activities for most of the year, the biggest problem is the country of Somalia which really does not have a functioning federal government and is run by regional warlords. The pirates are not a bunch of poorly trained and armed people but most are former militia and military people and are becoming better armed as they receive larger ransoms.

There is a coalition of countries that are trying to protect this shipping lane but it is a very large area and the number of ships passing through it is very large. Some of the reports I have heard is that some of the recent activities have taken place outside of the protected area.
As for the sinking of the pirates' mother ship I'll give that a two thumbs up, although the artical said that some of them escaped in smaller speed boats and they likely will return again . -

I heard that some shipping companies are now considering hiring armed private security for their vessels because almost all of these ships have unarmed crews. Blackwater can now get off the US dole and make some real money if they have the balls to do it.

There are pirates all over the world not just in this area. This area has a worse problem though. There are some operating in the Caribbean and South America going up around Florida. Same thing around Africa. These thugs target smaller boats and like pirates of old they come out of nowhere and attack viciously and overwhelm the people on the target vessel. In the Americas a use of the captured boats is smuggling so it goes beyond just being a pirate.
