ellsworth-toohey, well put! If God does not exist, why would any atheist object to something so innocuous. I also suppose many atheist would have objected to the past Presidential invocations of God, and they are NUMEROUS! As I've said before: Atheists have the best reason to pray, they better pray they're right.

Perhaps you would feel differently if it had been an Assyrian and had required your Homeland Security Department to puhlically proclaim that life and safety is secured by Baal.

The point of the Constitution's protection of Freedom of (and from) Religion is that we do not want a church state -- regardless of which church you select or who it's God may be. We all, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and even agnostics and athiests form the "United States. I don't expect anyone who doesn't share my religious beliefs to pay for disseminating them. Neither should you. If you believe in spreading your faith, pay for it yourself.

Politicians are perfectly free to declare their faith in a speech. They just aren't allowed under our Constitution to require us all to go along with their choice of diety in a law they pass.

hundreds of years of history, a history that has shown a marriage between religion and government [power] is a match made in hell and anything BUT innocuous

there's good reason to fear when God starts creeping into government documents, and away from heart and hearth, where he belongs

whether God exists or not isn't the issue...his followers exist and unfortunately some of them can get out of hand.

        that's why it matters
