A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.
The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

No, ameliog. Imho, true Christmas has been lost for the most part. This is some kind of perversion. Christmas used to be when we slowed down, took time for neighbors, put aside differences. We'd cook for days, share with everyone, friends and strangers alike.

I can't believe that these individuals were that crazed to not notice they were stepping one someone. It is one of the most sick events I have ever heard. Awful, selfish, selfish act. I hope there are charges pressed on every footprint made on each and everyone with murder. There has to be justice for this person and their families. I can't even fathom this.

Why do they even let these people continue to shop, if i was the store owner and something happened like that, I would shut my doors and no one would shop for anything....and if i was the only place in town that had your item, well... i guess you'll be paying full price tomorrow.

Yes, it's bizarre. The whole damned thing is bizarre! The police should have sent a swat team in with tear gas, and cleared the place out! For crying out loud, a man was killed by a mob of crazies and they just let em shop. -

At least one of the accounts I read mentioned that the employees & police were trying to close the store, but people were refusing to leave until they finished shopping. Some had to be forcibly ejected.

This is Walmart. They don't close unless absolutely necessary. I'm sure that their main concerns were how long until we can get opened again, and what are we gonna have to pay in a death bennefit. I can almost hear them in Bentonville. Was he a temp? Tell me he's a temp.

And now that we have a black president.... I was in downtown Dayton tonight for the anual christmas tree-lighting and children's parade and was waiting in line for the carosell when a large group of black people separated and cut in line individually and specifically in front of separate white people and the one that cut in front of me threatened my baby!! Her exact words were "I'll knock over that stroller." And when I called for the police she told them I made it all up and called me a female dog 23 times. Welcome to Blamericka!!

You know. I have been in some pretty scarey mosh pits that got out of hand and people got trampled. Ive been in a Super Bowl riot with the tear gas and great mobs of people running all over the place. People got hurt, but no one died in any of those cases. To hear a person gets trampled to death working at a Walmart. This society is sickens me at times.

There is much blame to go around for this tragedy, not the least of which is the retailers who encourage this insanity with these "first come" limited-time offers. End black Friday. Also there was totally inadequate security, and from the sound of it, they never should have opened the doors, and should have called the national guard for crowd control instead!!

I've been thinking that I should go to one of these early bird specials -- if not to buy, to see the people who would start shopping so early. Since I'm a nightowl I've never been able to get it together.

I know people can get caught up in the moment -- but to break down doors? To kill someone for a plasma TV? To knock down a pregnant woman?

There was one chain, now defunct, I think, that ran TV ads of people stampeding into the store for the fabulous deals.

You know Christmas in America means people rushing into the store like idiots to buy gifts for other idiots! These are the same people who crowd together in a building next to other idiots every Sunday and claim they love Jesus Christ. At the same time they are the ones that speed on the roads with their kids in the cars. This is nothing new. Christmas is not about acting like a jerk in these stores trying to get deals on crap you don't need. Most of the people who buy the stuff are then in my pawn shop the following months selling their things or pawning it off!

It is horrifying to see your great country unravelling before your eyes....to trample a human being...to snuff out a life for a buck ???? I agree..they should have closed the store. Disgusting. WALMART should be held accountalbe! They fail to provide safe conditions for workers AND shoppers-this is not the first time it's happened. Yeah, the shoppers are jackasses and yeah if I could ID them on tape, I'll file charges against them-but WALMART would get top billing. And I bet they paid the worker so little, he, like a good portion of their employees, qualify for food stamps and state aid, while they rake in BILLIONS and screw over the manufacturers to boot. WALMART SUCKS-STOP SHOPPING THERE.

This might be a little off subject but I had a long discussion w/ my 18 year old yesterday and the safety of shopping at this time of the year. I explained to her that w/ the approaching holiday season and desperation of the economy and job/home losses she should not be walking to her automobile alone at a shopping center, all packages should be kept in her trunk not in view of the backseat and carry her cell phone and car keys in her purse but in her pockets. The mounting pressures combined w/ the stresses of the holiday season make people crazy...enough to even trample workers. Its pretty sad.

Hey, I'm not trying to hold anyone back, I think we should abolish affirmative action programs and shout down demagogues like, Sharpton and Jackson, who tell blacks they are victims and need a handout. Perhaps the saddest part of the story is that this Walmart reopened for business a few hours later. I can hear the store manager telling the employees, "Ok I know just hours ago a 34 year co-worker of yours just lost his life in the line of work, but we need to continue to make money for mother Walmart"
