Ever since I was a small boy, long long ago, I always asked the question why canada and the USA never merged? Back then countries swapped and bought land all the time, now land is priceless to the major super powers, When you really stop and think about it, it would be a good thing to have done. Now it would be different and harder to do, but way back when, it would have created a better Nation for us ALL by now.

You probably mean well, but no, thank you. We are fine the way we are with possible government collapse and all. The US tried to invade Canada in the war of 1812 but failed. Let's just be neighbors; that's good enough for us. I'm not even convinced that it was a good idea to keep the US together with a bloody civil war.

Why should we join up with a country that has more issues than we do?
Quebec has been trying to seceed for a long time, over the French language.
Eastern terrorist find a haven there. Non-English speaking Orientals run a good part of the economy.
German intrests, and German expatriots run the rest.
You used to be able to visit Niagra Falls for a day or so without a passport, but so many undesireables were coming into the US, you now need a passport.
Yeah, let's annex Canada, we do not have enough of our own problems.
Then, we can pay out more welfare to people that never paid into the system.
And we just have to have it so we can have a border with Russia.
      Russians, the new illegal immigrant?
Think before you post. By the way, Canada is not a "major superpower. "

DUH!! What you just said about Canada (except Quebec) is fiction and embellishment... or is it lack of knowledge about Canada. I live in Canada and what you picture is false. Canada is a great country.

            klotzstang,

            We agree on two things:
            1. You don't want to join up with us, and we don't want to join up with you.
            2. We've had some problems with Quebec and we are working it out. There is no hostility between Quebec and the rest of Canada, it's more like sibling rivalry.

Now let's look at the rest of your post:

"Eastern terrorist find a haven there."

What do you base this on? Given that none of the terrorists that have attacked the US were from Canada, what makes you think that Canada is a haven for terrorists?

"Non-English speaking Orientals run a good part of the economy."

That's news to me, and I've lived in Canada most of my life. It is true that we have lots of immigrants (in some of our major cities more than 50% of the population is foreign born), and some of those immigrants are orientals. It is also true that the new immigrants, especially older ones, sometimes don't speak English very well, but as long as we can understand them, we don't mind.

"German intrests, and German expatriots run the rest."

What? Where did you get that? I hardly know any Germans.

"You used to be able to visit Niagra Falls for a day or so without a passport, but so many undesireables were coming into the US, you now need a passport."

The passport requirement is a US initiative, not ours, so complain to your own government. How many undesirables crossed over from Canada? Do you have any statistics on that? Besides, what's wrong with passports? If you travel anywhere else, you need a passport too, so what's the big deal?

"Yeah, let's annex Canada, we do not have enough of our own problems. Then, we can pay out more welfare to people that never paid into the system."

Welfare? What makes you think that we want welfare from anyone, let alone you? You will probably need us before we need you. As one of our ex-Prime Ministers once said, you don't buy anything from us that you don't need, and we don't buy anything from you that we really need. BTW, I completely agree that the two countries should not join, and I will fight side by side with you to prevent it.

"And we just have to have it so we can have a border with Russia."

Don't you already have one? Didn't Palin say that one can see Russia from an island in Alaska and that she is keeping an eye on the Russians and when Putin raises his head...?

            "Russians, the new illegal immigrant?"

Where? Most of our immigrants are legal, whether they are Russians or anything else.

'By the way, Canada is not a "major superpower. "'

No, it isn't, and we like it that way. There are advantages to being a small country, especially when that small country is so big.

I left out most of your rant. Where in the world did you get such a biased and negative view of Canada? And where along the way did you develop such unreasonable prejudices? Why do I get the feeling those prejudices translate to the American people as well?

I don't believe that they have nearly as many issues as we do. No ongoing wars; lack of health care for its people, etc. I don't think they would want this mess. Obviously, you are a white bigot, eh!

What are you talking about? This is a political struggle between the governing minority government and the opposition parties. This has nothing to do with Socialism or the government's ability to respond to a struggling economy. The Canadian banking system is the most solid in the world.
                    http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNew...

It is your politicians with their excessive spending and deregulations and your banks with their boundless greed and "creative accounting" that have caused this calamity for the whole world. The Canadian Government responds to the needs of its people the way it should. The minority Conservatives have tried to pull a fast one, and the other parties joined forces to prevent it.

I've visited Canada, east and west and it is a remarkable country and the folks I met were friendly and courteous. Let's leave them alone and just claim them as the good friends they are. They've got problems; we've got problems. Let's keep our own problems and not inflict them on the Canadians.

We exist in cages-bordered lands. We are all people surviving here. No matter if you live in Canada, U.S., or Africa, you still fall short to exist in a cage. Alas, if you were a Magnapinna, life would be surrounded by a super-sized aquarium. No need to jab anyone about what country is better or which has more faults-the systems are becoming more similar, with varying fundamental political differences.

I read the title to this story and thought well maybe this might have something to do with a complete lack of confidence in our government, then I read some of the comments and decided maybe I should read the artical since the comments sort of confused me a little.
After reading the story I would like to comment on IT. We have just gone through a federal election which gave the Conservatives a minority government, but the problem has to do more with the funds that the other parties need to continue to operate. The Conservatives raise most of their money from private sources but the other parties receive much money from the government and the Conservatives wanted to change this to save the taxpayer money, the loss of these funds is the main problem right now.
Mr.Harper feels he can govern like he has a majority government and must realize that he does not have a mandate to do so, those who say that what the opposition parties are doing is an insult to democracy are saddly mistaken.
This is a personal opinion but I feel the Liberals would have done much better in the election if it had not been for their Green Plan which scared just about everyone.

I agree that one of the main issues is the public funding of the political parties, but I'm not sure that the main goal was to save money for the taxpayers. It's a very small amount, something like $30 million. If he really wanted to save taxpayers money, he would have waited with the election until next year as he had promised. The election cost $300 million, 10 times as much as what the parties get. In my view, the main goal was the destruction of the other parties. Without that money, some of the small parties wouldn't have a hope to ever become major parties. They may receive 8% of the votes, but that translates to no seats in the parliament. Without the visibility and without the money, they would just die.

I tend to agree with the opposition that it is a very bad idea to eliminate that funding. I wouldn't like to see the same kind of political campaign in Canada as in the US where whoever raises the most money is likely to win. Some of that money comes with strings attached. I wouldn't want our politicians spend a billion dollars on the election.
