Terrorism That’s Personal »

Terrorism in this part of the world usually means bombs exploding or hotels burning, as the latest horrific scenes from Mumbai attest. Yet alongside the brutal public terrorism that fills the television screens, there is an equally cruel form of terrorism that gets almost no attention and thrives as a result: flinging acid on a woman’s face to leave her hideously deformed.

Although I have read about this abhorrent practice in the news, I have never seen photos of any of the victims. I gasped when I saw the cover photo. Sorrow and rage seem to converge in me. I hope Biden is able to help pressure these countries to uphold human rights for women.

"Acid attacks and wife burnings are common in parts of Asia because the victims are the most voiceless in these societies: they are poor and female. The first step is simply for the world to take note, to give voice to these women".

I hope everyone who reads this article passes it on to others.

The change needed for these cultural atrocities must come from within. No army can change the hideous mindset of these people. What can the world do? Other than offering asylum, I honestly can't think of anything.

There is a way to stop it. Do the same thing to those who do it !!!

That is just justice nothing less nothing more.
If the cowards who do these things have to face the same horrific consequences they will think twice before doing them !!!!

They wouldn't want me to find them doing that, where I would pour the acid on them would leave them writhing in pure angony and living in shame. That is not a man that does that, but a coward who is but an animal in a mans body.
Then I would pour it upon their face.

I'm so sorry for these women. I'm sorry they don't have real men in their lives. They have allowed the vermin of the earth to do as they will !!!!

CBG, I sure do feel your anger and outrage for these monsters. Pitiless and small, they take their shortcomings out on their women.
I say 'their women' because in many countries women are chattel. They have no say in their lives or their futures. The best they can hope for is to be 'married to a 'good' man. They have not allowed anything. Got "uppity" that's all.
These societal or cultural conventions are throwbacks to dark age or feudal times in my opinion. Many of the places where these practices take place have feudal local systems where no central government can exert law. They need, and I pray are in for, a world of change.

I haven't read the story or looked at the picture and I will not.
I've known about this practice for decades and never, ever would I excuse such an act.
Where I cannot tread, however, though I completely understand the feelings behind it and have the same instincts myself, is to cross into the territory of justifying "do unto others what they have done to others".
Paradoxically it "excuses" the original act - at least in my ethical cosmology.
So throw your virtual stones at me - its O.K. I'm a big guy..

This is Western liberalism's fatal flaw. It at once wants to preach diversity and multiculturalism with a blind eye to all that primitive, tribalistic cultures stand for, then having granted the West's stamp of approval on all that is inherently amoral or even brutal, attempts to cherry pick the more objectionable practices as if to seek absolution for having so ignorantly painted with the broad stroke.

And while the liberal West dances with the wolves of the third world, it takes direct aim at its own Judeo-Christian ethics and morals due to the relatively rare abuses that occur in the West...where it's clear that abuses occur not so much because of Judeo-Christian social mores but in spite of them.

Yes, these abuses of women need to be addressed. And liberals in the West need to grow up.

(Disclaimer: if you consider yourself a liberal but do not buy into multicultural stupidity, then I'm not addressing this to you.)

Well what do you expect, they stone to death rape victims in that part of the world because they have brought disgrace to the family.

I just can't wrap my head around this kind of thinking and the governments of these countries where these things occur must give implied approval because rarely, if ever, are the perpetrators punished.

This is heartbreaking. And anyone who can't see that is a fool, and the worst kind there is.

It's not about west v. east or old. v. new or white v. black... it's about RIGHT v. WRONG. It's about compassion, kindness, love and generosity. Anyone who is incapable of experiencing those four key feelings should be put out of their misery IMHO. People who purposely hurt or abuse any other living creatures for self-pleasure or gain are SICK and need to be treated accordingly. How do they call it? Oh yes, humanely euthanized! Now, lets treat the real animals out there... And we'll start with this disfigured woman's ex-husband!

They also hang women who teach girls how to read in those areas

A lot of the crimes are not well understood from our viewpoint because we in the West have many more freedoms as women and children.

It should not go on in any country but ignorance usually wins out in these situations.

The interpretation of the religious laws allow this and other horrors to continue. Not to mention the tribal customs.

I guess it's good people are seeing this, but I really wonder what world people are living in that this comes as a surprise. If you are surprised by this and have thoughts on world events, you should consider your position (even if you already know, it's good to reconsider your position constantly). There are different places in the world, different customs, different values. What I usually see on here is the simplicity of life in the West and not having to fear constantly, not having to scrounge to survive. The West views things from the top of Pavlov's pyramid and is at "self actualization". Even those who are almost at the bottom are above the majority of the world. When survival is primary in day-to-day life, decisions take on a different perspective.

This is all the fault of BUSH.
Soon it will be all the fault of Obama. Keeping in mind, Obama has PROMISED he will return to Afghanistan and fix all their problems too, as he runs away from and surrenders in Iraq. So, anything that goes wrong in Afghanistan after Obama is in office will indeed be the fault of Obama. Am I wrong about that. Perhaps the Democrat blame game is a one way street. It is a one way street isn't?

Hello! Have we noticed that stuff like beheadings, throwing acid on school girls and teachers, suicide bombings, etc. etc. are always done by individuals whose religion is Islam? Is there a connection somewhere?

Ok, so what is the purpose of this story? People have had acid thrown on them in the US and they were prosecuted if caught. Terrorism happens everywhere, and if they are caught they will be prosecuted there if that's the case. Hundreds of thousands of crimes go unsolved in the US every year and we are suppose to be concerned about crimes over there. ROFLMAO!

This is indeed a very bad situation in those countries at least according to our laws, but should we tell others how to behave and treat each other? Do we want others to tell us how to behave and treat each other? In our society, throwing acid in the face of any living creature is wrong and dealt with severly be it a human being or an animal. We also don't eat each other like some societies where cannibalism is practiced and is part of their society. We surely can offer suggestions and urge such societies to change, but using force to make them change would be no different if they forced us to change. What we see as wrong, they may see as right and vice versa. Just because we say it is wrong, doesn't make it wrong in their eyes.

So liberals. These are the kind of monsters we are supposed to feel sorry for? To treat them nice? Terrorist prisoners in Cuba and elsewhere given mints on their pillow??
These Islamic terrorists burn, mutilate, rape, kill innocent women in the name of Allah. These monsters should be doused with pig fat and set on fire. Let them meet their 72 virgins looking like burn toast!

I am not a VICTIM of domestic violence. I am a SURVIVOR of domestic violence. These women who survive are my sisters. My first marriae was to a man who felt trapped--so he felt the only way to et rid of me was throuh his words, his fists, a knife and boiling oil. I finally put HIM out when I decided to make it look like I was the INSANE one. I consider myself a VICTOR the night that happened, it meant I would LIVE. Please remember thaqt when you write of us--the women who survive. We might be banged up and dragged down by society, but we are ALL WINNERS. Thanks for allowing me to write on this-it is something that needs to be said and a common misperception.
