For the well-being of the animal, parents should consider giving the pet after the holiday, as opposed to before or on the holiday. The excitement and the hustle and bustle of people coming and going may create an unsafe environment for the pet, be it a puppy, kitten, lizard or goldfish. The child, especially a young child, may be too preoccupied with other gifts, visitors and the excitement of the day to be a proper caregiver, resulting in the new pet possibly not making it to the new year.
