UN peacekeeping on verge of crisis - Worldnews.com »

Why do we have conditions that demand a U.N. peacekeeping force? Perhaps the focus should be more concentrated on why the world is in such a state that peacekeeping actions are even necessary. Do we not yet realize that, despite perceived “successes” of peacekeeping efforts, we cannot control these conflicts for any period of acceptable time? Do we not see that the global conflicts are progressively worsening (and increasing in number) despite the attempts to bring these conflicts to resolution? This article reveals an interesting perspective since it completely avoids the fact that the presence of egoistic influences for power, money, and control that are the primary reasons for failure in peacekeeping efforts. Can we have any hope of peace when the destabilizing powers have no desire to change their actions? How can we resolve a problem when we do not have a correct perception of the problem? Who, but officials at the UN, would make such a bizarre claim that the higher number of peacekeeper deaths is indicative of their courage to fight? This position taken by the UN borders on complete nonsense, but does reflect a mindset that anything at all could be solved by peacekeeping actions and/or their deaths. That fact that more UN peacekeepers are dying post-Cold War is certainly not empirical proof of greater courage. Being an eight year veteran of the Marine Corps, I have seen far more death throughout the world from bad decision making than by acts of courage. But more deaths do reflect what has been evolving globally. We have not figured out how to stop killing each other. We have never produced more types and greater volumes of weapons for killing ourselves at any point in our history. Our collective focus must be concentrated on how to bring humanity to a higher degree of existence.

The term peacekeeping cannot be found in the United Nations charter, and yet the UN peacekeeping department has grown exponentially since its first mission in 1948.
