What do you think of Big Oil bailing out the Big 3 instead of the government? »
Posted By Newperson 12 months ago in NewsIt makes so much sense! The oil companies wouldn’t be living the good life if it weren’t for regular citizens like you and me buying and driving cars. The oil and auto industries rely heavily on one another, and Big Oil is sitting on the cash it could loan to the Big 3.
Of course, Big Oil may not have the vested interest in forcing automakers to adhere to strict fuel economy standards, but they do have the money and the influence to demand competitiveness while saving U.S. taxpayers from footing the bailout bill.

Well if you want to sell your software you better have machines that it can run on. Yes I think it may benefit 'big oil" if they provided some funds for the big three. They might even consider owning a piece of the action. Now fuel efficiency would be driven by the competition not by their product.

That is my thinking, why not let them go into bankruptcy and the acquire a controlling percentage of stocks and control the very source of your income making product.
Scary stuff !!! -

Not so sure about that; I have seen quite a few ads by Exxon and their new batteries they are pushing

About 8 years ago, heard an oil field rumour that said oil companies were wanting car companies to get more fuel efficient as the oil was needed for plastics; sounded plausible but could never track it down, mind you I did a lot of my searching in bars!!
lol
BTW I suggested this to sump a few weeks back and HM (spudnik)had a laugh.
Exxon did make $25 Bill profit in the 2nd and 3rd quarter this year, what about the rest. -

You and i all know this bailout thing is going to happen. So the goverment goes ahead with it and prolongs there companys awhile. They build cars who is going to buy them. Auto workers are not the only ones out of work. Stock pile cars in a warehousue until people can buy them.I dont wont to see anyone out of work but where do we draw the line

It was Big Oil colluding with the Big Three that had non-polluting, energy efficient public trolley systems ripped out of several big cities so that people would buy more cars and burn more gas.

Big Oil and the Big Three getting together would be good for the both of them, bad for consumers. -

Don't know about global, but in my neck of the woods (US border @ Montana to Alaska but in Canada) the winters for the last 10 years have been shorter and warmer.

10 years ago I would be up north already for a month, till April; but here I am still waiting for it to get cold enough to freeze the muskeg.Used to be sure of at least 6 weeks of -40 F/C (they are the same at that temp) every winter, but I think I have seen -40 for 6 weeks in the last 4-5 winters combined.Something is changing. -

We still have to think greener as we move forward. if we don't we will have nothing to look forward to... I should say... future generations will have nothing to look forward to. Some may go to far in respect to what is considered green... that can cause a bad image for "The green movement".

I have worked in the oil field, drilling, for almost 35 years, and I have always said that gas prices are manipulated. This year has proved it to me beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Reply
4-5 months ago oil was $140/Bbl and gas over $4@pump
Then the economic meltdowns come, each week a little worse than last, and lo and behold oil prices drop $100/Bbl.
Why?
To me till the crunch came, oil companies were raping the golden goose, and when the crunch came, they now fear that they may have helped kill it; because the need for oil has not changed that much in 4 months.
Greed, or a contrived plan for an economic takeover. -

The Big 3 should file Chapter 11 and restructure their organizatons. Delta did it. They can too. This business that people will not buy cars from a company filing Chapter 11 is nonsense. The companies will still be in business. I do not know why and do not want my tax dollars supporting them. They can get money from 136. GM is has already broken ground in Russia to open a new manufacturing plant. What kind of crazy is that. The Big 3 are only big in their own eyes. Toyota and other car manufacturers are worth more than the Big 3 together. Big 3 is holding the American public at ransom. UAW did alot to cause this to happen to. UAW has offered some help in lower costs but it is temporary. I would encourage all to listen to the Auto Hearings on CSpan and write to your Senators about your views.

Yes, labor has much to do with the problem, but someone, somewhere agreed to it.
Reply
I would suggest that all of auto management should be paid what they are worth, $150,000 max. Quite frankly, based upon the decisions, actions, and results, that may be too much.
Any thing that is conceded by labor should be applied, at the same percentage rate, for management, HR, etc.... for all. Place R and D on a commission basis. Negate all severance packages. -

I might be mistaken, but I think it's different for airline companies. They don't actually produce a product, they fly you around in one. People tend to look for the cheapest flight for vacations, and those who fly often usually stay with one company for the incentives.

Good advice on watching the hearings. I would encourage you all to look more deeply in to all of this.

They already are. Take a look at gasoline prices. I bought gas for $1.399 yesterday.
Reply
Gas price today, retail, is not proportional to the gas price this summer vs. the cost of oil.
Neither is diesel to gasoline. Then again neither is premium to regular.
The price is manipulated to serve the industry as they want. The oil industry does not want the US to move to a more fuel efficient consumption pattern. It is not in their interest. I think they may have stepped too far this past summer and are now trying to bolster the car industry through cheap gas. I was paying $4.199 a few months ago. After removing the $.46 in gas tax, you have a retail price of $.94 now compared to $3.74 this summer. Considering the cost of oil in Nov relating to current price, about $50 per barrel compared to the average price of about $125 in July. If wholesale and retail prices related directly to the cost of the material due to production prices being somewhat static over such a short time period, gas should currently be about $1.50 before the addition of the gas tax of about $.46. This total equals about $1.96 vs. the current $1.40.
So, for an industry that claims a 8-11% profit margin, either we will be bailing them out soon or their numbers are being manipulated as they desire them to be to tell a story a certain way. My guess is choice #2. -

And you do not think that those costs are passed on to the consumer? Please demonstrate that the meddling only occurs with the big three and not any other manufacturer producing or selling cars here.
Reply
The meddling pushed them from 15 to 25 mpg during the period of 78 to 84. After Reagan revoked the Carter mpg rule to try to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, how well did the car manufacturers do in the succeeding 24 years in improving mpg on their own? The car manufacturer's problems of their own doing and short-sightedness.
Let them go bankrupt. Why should they be rewarded for failure? That is socialism.

Buy American. The Japs are getting even for WW II. The thing that gets me is the number of Hispanics, in South Florida, that buy Jap cars. They live in America and should support our economy or go back to Cuba or wherever. Ungrateful assholes.

You know what...if you want to buy an American made car, I'm behind you all the way. But if you're going to tell someone else to buy an American car, when its more expensive and worse on mileage, then you're the ....
Reply
Being an American patriot is not about only buying American made products. It's about the quality of the product. "Proud to be an american" doesn't mean we should all buy $17 lightbulbs when there's a pack of 6 for $2.47.
You want to be proud of American Made cars? So do I. Let's get them back into the game the right way. -

The "Japs" are getting even for WWII by providing us with a good product at a decent price? Woah grandpa, watch what Pfizer's putting in your meds.
Reply
I'm an Irish-American, born and bred here in Dirty Jersey. I drive a Honda, because the damn thing actually runs. It's 15 years old, and the only service it requires is a standard oil change. Everyone I know with a Ford or Chrysler over eight years old spends half their time at the mechanic, the rest at their job trying to put gas in the thing.
The big three should support our economy by offering the world a product that sells, and not just here. By putting R+D money in to gas efficiency, not dashboard refrigerators and sun-visor televisions. This exact same thing already happened in the 70s. The "Japs" were wiser businessmen, and they won out. That's the market.
I encourage you to find other racists like yourself and bring 'em down to Florida. Make sure to move closer to the water so when the next Tahoe-induced hurricane wipes your backward ass state off the map, we can all feel a little less mortified. Prick.
