Maybe it's really like a flagging nation seeing the numbers going down and down, and somebody who NEEDS higher numbers on the charts has been encouraging this to help keep the US GDP higher.
Reply
Of course, we could try to discourage this kind of activity, as well as all foreign investment in the US, and watch the GDP totally tank.
But every time you take out another mortgage, another car loan, or use your credit cards to put off until later what you could never afford today, it's like giving away more of the US to those people lending you the money.

Wow, this is awesome. I'm so glad that some responsible and hardworking people are still willing to invest in the American dream. I think we should take pause, and try and learn from our hardworking Chineese comrades, who truly value education, hard work and family. All this whining is from a bunch of lazy, overweight Americans and amounts to nothing more than a bunch of sour grapes. We're reaping what we have sewn!

You know, there was a time when the Italian, Irish and German immigrants were seen as a threat. It's funny how history repeats itself. Reading some of your comments, you'd think it was the end of the world to have people of color "owning" the U.S. Get used to it, and quit being so ignorant and racist. I hope, when things are really bad, you people have to take jobs as servants to an asian or arab family!

May of you may not know many States has the rights to take and buy "ANY" land at market value(which is always below real deserved price anyway) if they need to. Just because some individuals from any country own 1 or few tiny lots in boondocks is not going to take over US (as a country), not even Donald Triump for numerous properties he owns in various cities. In real estate, it's only money talks. So is US's economy ! -

China holds over a $$$trillion dollars in US bonds and derivatives. They manufacture a large chunk of our consumer products (including lead-based toys and melamine tainted baby formula - thanks to what used to be the US government, now a defunct criminal cartel of bankers and corporate pirates), now the Chinese are buying more real estate that the fading American middle class can no longer afford? Welcome to the New World Order, folks. Better learn to speak Chinese and exchange your worthless Benjamins for Yen.

The Yen is Japanese currency. And I remember when every one was crying about the Japanese owning America. How did that turn out? And I remember when everyone was crying about the Arabs owning America. And how did that turn out? And now we have the Chinese? Did anyone take a look at China lately? Not so good. We'll see how this one turns out.

The derivatives are worthless. So the more they own the better for the USA.

I don't believe you bloggers. You sit on your (A)ss and complain about minorities causing the foreclosures, while China is looking at this as a business opportunity. You bloggers don't want the Government to bail the foreclosures out, and you don't want the Chinese to buy the foreclosed homes. You all are some prejudice (S)ON OF (B)ITCHES.

This has been going on for years.... Canadians and other nationalities buying in the USA... Americans and others buying in Canada.

The problem that arises is... when there is a buyer that has deep pockets and is willing to spend, it drives the price of real estate up beyond what a local person is able to afford. I see this all the time on water front properties... most of the buyers are American or German. Now I do have regrets.... what I could have bought 10 to 15 years ago has gone up 10 to 15 times in price. That being said ..... yes I would have sold to a non resident. -

Unbelievable! First our jobs now our housing. There is more that goes along with homeownership than just owning the home. People who buy homes and live in those homes also spend their money in the community, support instituions in the community- schools, churches etc. Do you really think foreigners who own American property are concerned about the quality of life in America? They certainly are not going to put any money back into communities they are just here to rape the profits from American realestate.

Taxes do not fully suport communities. Activities of day to day living support communities. Involvement in civic programs, schools, churches and support of business are what make communities strong. All you have to do is look around American communities and those with housing stock owned by rental investors become transient communities where people come and go with no commitment to their neighborhoods. Slumlords do not take care of the properties and the people who live there are not committed to their neighborhoods.

I think it is time that America should be for Americans--whether it is jobs, real estate, and proper REPRESENTATION of us by elected officials. Free trade is not free, if the game is not played by common rules and reciprocity. If we cannot buy real estate over there, they should not be allowed to buy it here.

You are correct. The majority of the money made here by foreigners and even current immigrants is sent back to their homelands. The largest group of philanthropic givers in America are wealthy white men, followed by women who will give if they are emotionally charged by an issue, minorites will give to programs and servics in their own communities but those from foreign lands do not support community programs they send their money back to their home countries.
Reply
The current immigrants are not like the ones years ago who came here to build America and give back to America for the opportunities.

I believe that is was a Russian leader who said "We will sell you the rope to hang you"....Guess that we just never learn that short term thinking, leads to long term grief! The Chinese are patient and are lurking in the shadows at all times, waiting for us to show weakness. Are we that big of a fool?

i guess we're back to the "yellow peril" mentality--the mis-information here is just astounding..and a little scary--there is no such thing as reciprocal rights for owning real-estate..even within countries--when the japanese were flush and buying up everything foreigners couldnt own property there--now you can..but just try and do it--and even within our borders there are wide range of conditions--for most of hawaii you can buy the building but you lease the land--especially for the really valuable parts of oahu and the smaller islands---its all privately held but it might as well be the govt that owns it --just more fear mongering from the left and another chance to blame bush for something

and most of the chinese i know actually live in the homes they buy--and if they are sending money home its to their parents in brooklyn or nj--the real drain of money is going to mexico from illegals and citizens--but they also live in what they buy and usually in the worst areas because they so cheap--then they fix them up and the neighborhood turns around and then you hear the complaints about all the spanish stores and signs etc--but its a lot better for a city than the crack houses and crime that used to be there--the problem isnt the chinese...its our govt thats killing the economy

I have a small apartment building in northwest Tennessee built in 1989. A nice quiet area close to Kentucky Lake and Tennessee River. A great place to fish and hunt. My building has 2 one bedroom apartments and 2 two bedroom apartments. The appliances are furnished. I am looking to sell due to illness. Do you know of anyone that might be interested? Contact me through email at arg@bellsouth.net
