Did The Obama Campaign Use The SEIU To Keep Blagojevich At Arms Length?
WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following was released today by the Republican National Committee:
The Service Employees International Union Acted As The Intermediary Between Blagojevich And The Obama Camp:
An SEIU Official Acted As “An Apparent Intermediary Between The Governor And Barack Obama’s Camp.” “Among the revelations contained in the complaint brought against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich yesterday was the description of an official with the Service Employees International Union acting as an apparent intermediary between the governor and Barack Obama’s camp in discussions over Obama’s Senate seat.” (Alec MacGillis, “Union Official Allegedly Liaison Between Governor, Obama Team,” The Washington Post, 12/10/08)

Union Is Caught Up in Illinois Bribe Case
The complaint said Mr. Blagojevich’s chief of staff, John Harris, had suggested to a service employees official that the union should help make the governor the president of Change to Win, a federation of seven unions that broke away from the A.F.L.-C.I.O. The complaint said Mr. Blagojevich, a Democrat, was seeking a position that paid $250,000 to $300,000 a year.
In exchange, the complaint suggested, Mr. Blagojevich had expected the service employees union and Change to Win to seek to persuade him to name President-elect Barack Obama’s first choice, Valerie Jarrett, to succeed Mr. Obama in the Senate. The union would also receive help from the Obama administration, presumably for its legislative agenda. -

"With Mr. Blagojevich evidently hoping to trade favors with Mr. Obama, the service employees seemed like a sensible intermediary because it was widely seen as having done more than any other union to elect Mr. Obama. The service employees’ political action committee spent at least $26 million on Mr. Obama’s behalf in the presidential campaign, making it by far the largest single PAC donor in the campaign.
Reply
The service employees union was also the top overall donor to Mr. Blagojevich’s 2006 re-election campaign, with records showing it donated more than $900,000, or about 5 percent of his total campaign funds. "-

OK, this story is rife with passive voice, something which should trigger a BS alert.

Example: "the service employees seemed like a sensible intermediary"
Seemed to whom? The author, of course. But the author could not say that, because to do so would flag this as an opinion piece rather than hard journalism.
When opinion masquerades as hard journalism, it becomes propaganda.

Contact: Emanuel spoke with Blago “on multiple occasions” about Senate seat
http://hotair.com/archives/2008/12/12/contact-eman...
"The attempt by President-elect Barack Obama to distance himself from the scandal erupting in Illinois took a big hit last night with this exclusive report from Chicago’s Fox affiliate. Sources within the investigation say that Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s chief of staff, spoke with Governor Rod Blagojevich on “multiple occasions” about the Senate succession that Blagojevich had wanted to sell to the highest bidder — and that Emanuel will likely be on the FBI wiretaps" -

Yuck!! NO!!!! But then I'm not that weirdo Chris Matthews....wonder if he's still wanting to run for congress? He'd fit right in....along with Foley and Craig.
If Rahm-Bo gets dropped from Obama's cabinet, I guess he can always just keep his senate seat....it hasn't been auctioned off to the highest bidder yet. Rahm may get rammed.

The media has touted Obama's high I.Q. through out the campaign. It is amazing to me how a harvard graduate intelligent as he is could hook up with so many known shady, disgusting lyging deviants and crooks, then expect to come out of this unscathed. But so far he seems clear. The saga continues.

Den, do you really think he will be able to keep his position? Do you think he should? Do you not think Obama is intelligent enough to know that he wouldn't want him in his cabinet and be a burden to him during his administration?

Just wondering, since you negged my comment. How about actually discussing this with me so you can see my take on it and I can see yours? -

Wouldn't your time be better spent thinking of why your party lost its power, what a mess you have left our very popular and dynamic President to deal with, and helping him deal with if.

After all the BS of the Bush Administration and his far right wing supporters, no one cares what you think except other outnumbered Republicans. So, I would suggest you quit wasting time trying to invent a scandal, and get back to work. Lord knows you've not worked very hard during the Bush Administration. We need a leader, not a party of gossip columnsts.-

Associations that Bush made such as Cheney, Rummy and others had a very deleterious effect on his administration, something you guys rightly cried in the wilderness for 8 years. Now that doesn't matter now that it's your guy?
I'd think that the better time spent would be you Dems thinking about how we lost and not make the same partisan mistakes, since you are now at the helm of the Good Ship America, don't you?
You remember how well it worked for us when we 'didn't care'
This is far from and invented scandal it's a real one, with indictments forthcoming and tapes with proof of misdeeds on the Governor's part for certain. Only time will tell (and it will) if it goes any farther than him. Seeing how their were 5 candidates vying for Obama's lauded Senate seat it's likely that there will be more involved in this 'real scandal'.
I for one hope that Obama isn't involved. -

This may develop into a story about Obama.

Right now, the logic is "Blagojevich pitched someone at the SEIU who pitched someone "in the Obama camp" for a position, therefore Obama and the SEIU are complicit.
Based on what's out there now, it sounds like the worst that happened is the SEIU guy said "I'll pass it upline." BFD.
I'm not an Obama fan, and if it turns out that Obama or his representatives were pulling the strings on any of this, its not going to hurt my feelings. But right now its pretty weak journalism. -

I love that you guys are always the first to cry about bias in the media and yet you put forth an article from such a horribly biased site such as that. What a piece of crap. One of the articles was talking how Bush is pushing to use the bailout money for the auto industry and yet it blames the democrats for it. My, how unbiased. I love that in an article titled "Bush pushes for..." it's still not Bush's fault. Let President Elect Obama at least get into office and do something before you tear him apart. I certainly don't go looking for things to prove Bush is a terrible president. He certainly serves them on a silver platter. Let Obama at least do something before you try to discredit him.

Obama is our President and I support him. I don't want him to have to be side-tracked by this kind of a situation. I am not accusing or blaming Obama for anything at this point. I want him to be successful even though I did not vote for him. -

I just learned today that Obama is a tobacco smoker, a nicotine fiend if you will. Heck, I'm going to start smoking now. I support anything & everything Obama. All Democrats should show their support and start smoking and become nicotine fiends like Obama!

Since we're speculating.......One scenario could be that Rahm and Obama played ball with, but better than Blago up until just after 2006. Blago became more of a liability, Obama didn't need him anymore in any case, and wanted/needed to stay clean for the run at the Presidency. Blago didn't want to go away, was too dirty to hide, so he's left out in the cold. I wouldn't be surprised if Emmanuel was one of the informers. He's into protecting Obama and the Presidency, he would not have allowed Blago to dirty Obama. This would explain Obamas time lapse in releasing all the details of contacts between his team and Blago. They knew of and were participating in the investigation. Cleaning up old loose ends. Blago was hanging himself, so Emmanuel helped.
