Endo, there are kernels of truth in both the conservative and progressive ideologies. Where people go wrong is grabbing one or the other and insisting that it is the only answer to every question ever asked.

Government can be wasteful. It can also be a vital part of a solution the private sector could never tackle. This country will be much healthier if we can put aside the partisan bitterness and fear that keeps left and right clinging to a sole approach to every problem.
Imagine a doctor who always takes out the tonsils without even bothering to give the patient an examination. If the tonsils are already out, then he';d just give them morphine till they die, because his ieology says removing the tonsils always works, and it that can't be done, there is no hope. Imagine that and you've gotr a good picture of the fir right and the far left today. All they argue about is what needs to be taken out. -

Yes endo government help comes with a price tag. The Hoover dam was an unprecedented project at the time and it cost big money. Eisenhower pushed the interstate highway system and it cost serious money. They were some of the best investments our country ever made. The new economy is about information processing. The Indians know this and are doing what Americans used to do. Because of the speed of the internet a doctor in America (who is probably from India anyway) will do an MRI or CAT scan and then the results get sent over the internet to a techie in India who interprets them for $10 a day. Ever called customer service and spoken to an American? America's best selling point is our political stability and our infrastructure. You could open a factory in the middle of Africa and pay people with rice. If you did though you would find there is no way to move your product, no way to get materials, and the local economy is completely dependent on shaking you down for "fees" aka bribes. Or you could open up shop in America and your only concern is making and selling your product because you can reach anyone in the world with our shipping and internet connectivity. Oops sorry I got carried away thinking about how great improving internet speed will benefit America and help job producing comanies that I completely forgot about what you said endo.

Quite true, Endo, but usually anything of value also comes with a price.

Since the free flow of information is the cornerstone of a free society, the Federal government has just reason to pay the necessary cost in order to maximize the free flow of information that the internet can provide. -

Some of these responses to Endo's post border on hypocrisy.
Reply
Most sound like a rebuke or counter perspective to Endo's post.
ET's post is very true, but, so is Endo's if you read it literally without injecting any innuendo or underlying intent!
Endo post is based on the notion that the Federal government's efforts historically have been expensive, even when the cause was noble and just. Common sense tells you that any three-party system is going to be less than "cost-effective". (When the decision-makers are spending money not their own on someone else's behalf, there is little incentive to be cost-effective.)
Note that Endo does not criticize Obama's efforts or what the government plans to do, but cautions us to be wary. What is wrong with that?
Let's be honest - if this were a Republican or Conservative effort, Democrats & Liberals would be attacking it it as another attempt by the government to take away our freedoms...

I don't know how he's going to do it. The telecommunications industry, which Reagan DEREGULATED, OWNS everything about the infrastructure required to deliver the internet into homes and schools. They are a bunch of greedy obscene profit grubbing scumbags. The only way for the U.S. to catch up is to REregulate them and take the infrastructure for the internet away from them. Why not? Why do you think we rank 15th in the world for the internet availability and speed? BECAUSE THE OTHER COUNTRIES OWN IT! NOT private business! Nationalization? Socialism? Hmmm? Call if whatever you like, free and rampant capitalism favored by the Republican party sure as hell hasn't done us a lot of favors in the last 30 years!

My personal idea in politics is first you rape whoever is in charge and then you point a gun at their wife and wait until they suggest negotiation. It works like this. Yes you big companies own the wires but that passes on my land. I will do what I want with any wire in my land and sue them for trespassing. If more people felt the way I do we could destroy their grid in a few days. If I were in charge I would tell the companies that I will look the other way while everything they own is sold as scrap metal. Or we could cut a deal where they agree that providing good service at a fair price is going to happen because that is what is good for America and we are all in this together. I am sure that all the CEOs would agree to whatever the public wants when they compare it to losing everything.

I agree it well come with a price tag, children in school thats fine but children owning one, all they want to do is talk and play games. And the parents cant watch them all the time. look what happened to the girl when that mother got on there and the girl killed herself. if we turn the paret control on they are smart enough to turn it off. I useally agee with what Obama says, but this is dangerious for our children, what if they think that their talking to someone who really likes them, and give out infomation, like wher our kid or kids live and go to school. kids dont know, they be giving information to someone who are pretending to be a child their age and the price tag on that is losing that child to a grown man or preditor, I dont want to take that risk, because kids do things without thinking. Our worst nigtmare would be one of the other.

Well, the new president of the G8 already announced that he wants to control the internet. Obama is pro-globalist and is willing to work with other countries, even if it's not in our interest. The MPAA already approached the Obama admin to get tighter control over media rights on the net. Then the RIAA already owns Joe Biden. I'm not a conspiracy type, but I can add up the scores, and the math has been working out pretty accurately lately.

Oh yea, the new AG previously said that downloading = theft.-

I'm a Web developer and Net Neutrality cheerleader. But downloading copyrighted material for free does equal theft. It is in society's interest that creators of good content (songs, movies, books, what have you) be able to receive a financial reward for their work. Without that incentive, there will be much less good content generated and the Internet will be a bonanza of Jaskass videos and the like.
Reply
Maybe we need to work out a new model of compensation in the Internet age. Numerous Web 2.0 applications have proved you can profit from giving content away. But there has to be some reasoanble revenue stream. As the law stands right now, software and content piracy do equal theft, and for good reason.

The US is falling behind in the technology sector. We produce the best managers, accountants, lawyers and marketing people. But science and engineering are jobs for technical nerds, not cool people.
Reply
Japan and germany are two examples of countries where science and engineering are respected. And they are two countries that are rapidly displacing the US in high tech industries.-

100% CORRECT!!!

In America, making money is the real driver and for the past 3 decades, the "best and brightest" are encouraged to go to Wall Street to make their millions by the time they reach 30.
Years ago, it was not uncommon for a scientist or engineer to be at teh top of a company. Not so anymore. Those that do go into science or engineering start out with good salaries, but, then, they are quickly overtaken by those who are better at sales and marketing (their #1 product is themselves). Hence, we have a bunch of finance/business./accounting people running the companies and then we wonder why we are losing our technical edge.
Look at politics! How many people with technical backgrounds are in office?
Most politicians are lawyers or business people. No slam intended there, but, that is hardly a recipe for strong technical development!
