The Torture Report - Prosecute Them »

Posted By Neophile 1 year ago in Political News

We can understand that Americans may be eager to put these dark chapters behind them, but it would be irresponsible for the nation and a new administration to ignore what has happened — and may still be happening in secret C.I.A. prisons that are not covered by the military’s current ban on activities like waterboarding.

A prosecutor should be appointed to consider criminal charges against top officials at the Pentagon and others involved in planning the abuse.

Bringing a nation to war under false pretense, war crimes, torturing human beings, and causing the deaths of over a hundred thousand people is a crime of monumental proportions.

The fact that some people try to rationalize it away only adds to the poison that has infected our nation. The United States of America will never regain its standing in the world or with its people until this national disgrace and international tragedy is confronted.

I am saddened by the silence and dismissal of this vital subject. There is no escape. Anyone who went to Vietnam knows in their heart of hearts that they were lied to and exploited for the selfish interests of the greedy corporations that made millions at the cost of thousands and thousands of lives and limbs. And anyone, ANYONE, who spent time in Iraq will be haunted by the same truth -- whether they someday come to admit it or not. It's a hell of a lesson to learn, and worse to not learn.

As much as I support Obama, I am certain that there is a point where hope, pragmatism, and ambition cannot succeed without a concerted effort to amend the wreckage of our past mistakes. Without holding accountable those that our nation enabled to commit these atrocities, we can be assured the lives of thousands of sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, for generations to come will suffer for this failure to protect the highest values a society must cherish above all.

Without coming to grips with the truth of our mistakes, this country will never be able to sustain prosperity, domestic tranquility, or peace in the world again. I know this to be a fact and unfortunately only time will prove the validity of these words.
