I've never met you, but my heart goes out to you. I've been through the same thing a few times, but it doesn't get any easier.

We have a new dog now, but that doesn't erase the hurt of losing the old one. Just reading your post caused me a severe pang as I thought of the dog we lost in 2004.
All you can do is remember the good times. I'm sure your dog wouldn't want you to be sad. Miss her, of course. Just don't let her passing cause you too much grief.

Newperson, my heart goes out to you. We lost one of our beloved dogs in July and the other in August. Both were almost 14. There is no better friend or family member than a dog. They are truly sweetness and light. The petloss.com site has been a real source of comfort to me. Peace to you, my friend.

Hi NP!

I have a 13 yr old brindled whippet-cross - she looks all whippet but a wee bit chunkier, inherited from my daughter when she went to live in NYC. An absolute sweetheart [daughter too!] with only one ugly habit - scouting for garbage.
Her mortality has been an issue for a while and she had an operation a couple of years ago for some nasty growths on her belly. For the last several months we've been treating her homeopathically - with our vets' blesssing - and she seems untroubled by what is still there on her belly. At the very least her enjoyment of life is tremendous and she can still outrun just about any other dog in town. She also comes to work with me at the times that I do actually have to physically show up.
Its hard to imagine what life will be like without her but meanwhile we go everywhere together - she has been in some fantastic places, attended an evening party at the fantastic Castle in Cesky Krumlov - the Commedia dell'Arte performance in the Masquerade Room, a Concert in the Baroque Theatre and the Buffet in the Garden and at the end of the evening the Director described her as 'the jewel of the evening'! [This is a country which ADORES dogs, in case you couldn't tell..]
So hang in there!! Let the feelings come through and out - in doses that you can handle..
Good you could share it here and get some on-line support.
I hope its helping. -

So very sorry Newperson, I too had lost one about a year ago, I still look down at my feet before I take a step around the house because he was always there. They are our best friends and I miss mine like crazy and from time to time I still yell for him along with my other two to go outside...The pain will ease soon but I will never forget him...Thanks for sharing...

You have my sincere condolences Newperson. Believe me when I say I know how you feel. We lost our Daisy a few years ago after having had her in our family for over 15 years. All of us still miss her. Maybe I'm just a sentimental fool but the sadness has lessened but hasn't passed and I cried for you when I read your opening. In fact my eyes are still watering.

It's like losing a family member. I know I've lost a few, and it never gets easier. My prayers and condolences to you and your family.
I still remember my Cocker Spaniel "Angel."
We'd go hunting and fishing together. Got bit by a rattlesnake when we were camping. Nothing I could do. I had to put her down, she was so loving. Broke my heart !!!
Heres a song ya might enjoy.

I cried like a baby when my sweet JOY died. She was a mixed part puddle, part spaniel and grew up with me in college and in my professional life. After two tumor operations, I couldn't stand to see her in pain anymore and helped her pass away at the vet. I remember taking her home and burying her in my backyard in the pouring rain and spent an hour crying in the shower afterwards. It's never easy losing the one's you love. I still feel a hole in my heart that she filled. -

We had both of ours that died a short time ago cremated and I've been unable to bury the ashes yet. I know the right day will come. In the meantime, they are in pretty carved wooden boxes with bronze plaques with their names. Reading this makes it feel like they are here with me. Thank you for sharing this and helping me to reconnect with my babies.

Very sorry for your loss. We lost our dog of 14 years last month too. I feel your pain. I still miss her, and so does my wife. I use her image for my moniker. Deaf at birth, we taught her sign language for simple things like no, stay, come here, shake, laydown....I could talk about her for hours but it still make we want to cry.....so I'll stop.

I think I'll change the image to one of her puppy pictures tonight. -

I was eight when our First English Springer Spmniel, Rex was stolen.

Four years later we had to put Rex number 2, also an English Springer Spamiel down. I won't go into details other than to say this, parents should deal with putting the animals to sleep at the Humane Society without their kids. I to this day (I was 12 then so 28 yrs ago) still remember what the woman behind the desk looked like, my brother squeezing his best friend to death not wanting to let go (he was seven at the time), my step mom prying his fingers off of him, the vet tech putting the pole leash thing around him, my step mom and brother walking away, my brother screaming in the background, and Rex turning around to look at me. I've never forgotten the look on his face. He was looking for my dad (my dad did abuse him though so it was good for Rex to go. Wish it had been different.). My dad couldn't handle it, refused to go and made us deal with it.
Polo, named after my grandma and grandpa, the runt of the last litter their barn cats had, we had to give up because my dad said we couldn't have more cats. I was 14 and this was cat. Only had him a month. I was the only one he'd come too, look for, and I was taking care of him. Scampi the cat we had (also grieved the loss of Rex 2, they did everything together.) was my step mom's cat, and Dusty the wired haired terrier mix was my dad's and brothers dog. My brother ignored Dusty and stuck mainly with his tropical fish, camelions, and horn tailed lizard.
I miss them all. I'm sorry for your loss Newperson, and for all those who have shared the loss of a pet I'm sorry for your losses too. Those whose pets are sick, I feel for you. Hang in there. -

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, and then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is Heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use heaven's name like that?"
"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind." -

So sorry to hear of your loss Newperson, I know it feels like you never ever want to have a pet again because the pain is so great, but just keep the great years of memories alive, think about all the love she had because of you,how much love you got because of her. regardless of what our pets are, dog, cat, bird, they are close to our hearts and when they go, it feels as if a piece goes with them. It sounds like you are amongst many pet lovers here, which is good because not all people understand the bonds between us and our loved animals, and tho I've suffered before with losses, I can't imagine it again with my Monkey Boodle now,it's very hard every time and you have my heart felt condolences.

I had a cat for 12 years.I took the guy in when my sister in law could not keep it.I wasn't looking for one but I said no problem, my niece and nephew would be able to come over and see him. I needed to put him down a year ago at this time and I was shocked at how badly I felt when it was done. I am a 55 year old man and I felt really bad for a long time.I had no idea how much it would hurt to do this when I made the decision. You will get over the grief at some point but it will take time.
