    Krampus, Santa,...all the Xmas guys (even Jesus) owe their existence to Pagan traditions.

      Every hero needs a nemesis. Jesus and Satan. Superman and Lex Luthor. Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty. Ash and Evil Ash. And, of course, Santa has Krampus. The Krampus, like Santa Claus himself, is a compilation of Christian figures and Pagan deities who is, depending once again where one is, either St. Nik’s enemy or his helper. Weird, eh? Where St. Nik rewards children for being good, typically the Krampus is the guy carrying the big gnarly switch of punishment. The tradition is mostly Austrian, although it spread spottily around Europe.

            Love the last two sentences:

            Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day;
            Give him a religion, and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish.

              I left out cookies and milk for Santa and Krampus ate the plate and glass! Santa put gifts under the tree and Krampus stole the tree, but left the ornaments! This year I've set the tree in a bear trap...

              Krampus/ Prechten are from Austria, just about every town in Austria has this tradition, it spills into Italy and not quite positive but a few other countries as well. The masks are carved from wood...can you believe that???? they also have fire breathers, fire crackers,smoke, flares, fires in pots they drag around etc...it's like Christmas and Halloween wrapped up into one :-)
              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30JEDXjKyzc=channel...

              I've been enthralled with them for a few years now, I have a whole DVD of one of the Krampus group from this guy in Austria who runs the event in his town....oh how I would love to go some time.
              There are 100s of youtube videos on there...just type in Krampus or Prechten

              what their 'band' usually plays......and it's basically the same beat everywhere, and same costumes for the 'band' members, which I think are made from corn husks. The Krampus have the furry outfits and have bells on their backside and have switches. Brown, black or white is used for the fur.

                  Saint Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, also has a macabre side. The miracle for which he is best known is resurrecting three boys who were chopped to pieces and thrown in a pickle barrel. See "Nicholas Resurrects Pickled Boys!: An evil shopkeeper chops up and pickles three boys. A fourth-century saint comes to the rescue." http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Christianity/Ortho...

                    By some accounts, Nicholas is the patron saint of "children, sailors, fishermen, nudists, the falsely accused, pawnbrokers, prostitutes, repentant thieves, many cities." http://www.answers.com/topic/saint-nicholas
