Old Farmers Almanac: Global cooling may be underway - USATODAY.com »
Posted By Spinward 11 months, 1 week ago in Science & TechnologyBased on the same time-honored, complex calculations it uses to predict weather, the Almanac hit the newsstands in September saying a study of solar activity and corresponding records on ocean temperatures and climate point to a cooler, not warmer, climate, for perhaps the next half century.

What does the coldest winter in decades mean for the global warming crowd? According to the Farmer's Almanac, which went out on a limb in September by correctly forcasting colder weather, the planet is entering a cooling trend.
Reply
Maybe it is rather arrogant to determine that we control the weather as much as the sun does. Maybe the current decrease in solar activity (I've posted on this for the last year and a half) will keep the planet from warming after all.
Merry Christams!-

It remains to be seen, said Editor-in-Chief Jud Hale, whether the human impact on global temperatures will cancel out or override any cooling trend.
"We say that if human beings were not contributing to global warming, it would become real cold in the next 50 years," Hale said.

THAT's the essential "small print", without which the rest of the story is meaningless.
If we enter a post-industrial era - meaning that EITHER "big business" goes bankrupt or runs out of natural resources to exploit, both of which look like reasonable possibilities on current form, at least as far as the "Western world" is concerned then it may well come to pass as predicted.
We'll have to wait and see whether the polar bears will still have any pf their traditional habitat left or of they'll be condemned to scouring the garbage of the human world. -

Some scientists have been warning about this for years but were largely ignored:

Global Cooling comes back in a big way
Dr. Kenneth Tapping is worried about the sun. Solar activity comes in regular cycles, but the latest one is refusing to start. Sunspots have all but vanished, and activity is suspiciously quiet. The last time this happened was 400 years ago -- and it signaled a solar event known as a "Maunder Minimum," along with the start of what we now call the "Little Ice Age."
Tapping, a solar researcher and project director for Canada's National Research Council, says it may be happening again. Overseeing a giant radio telescope he calls a "stethoscope for the sun," Tapping says, if the pattern doesn't change quickly, the earth is in for some very chilly weather.
In 2005, Russian astronomer Khabibullo Abdusamatov predicted the sun would soon peak, triggering a rapid decline in world temperatures. Only last month, the view was echoed by Dr. Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. who advised the world to "stock up on fur coats." Sorokhtin, who calls man's contribution to climate change "a drop in the bucket," predicts the solar minimum to occur by the year 2040, with icy weather lasting till 2100 or beyond

If global warming was going to cause so many problems what do you think global cooling will do - especially to the food supply?-

According to the National Climatic Data Center, 2008 will be America's coldest year since 1997, thanks to La Nina and precipitation in the central and eastern states. Solar quietude also may underlie global cooling. This year's sunspots and solar radiation approach the minimum in the sun's cycle, corresponding with lower earth temperatures. This echoes Harvard-Smithsonian astrophysicist Dr. Sallie Baliunas' belief that solar variability, much more than carbon dioxide, sways global temperatures.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service reports that last summer was Anchorage's third coldest on record. "Not since 1980 has there been a summer less reflective of global warming," Craig Medred wrote in the Anchorage Daily News. Consequently, Alaska's glaciers are thickening in the middle. "It's been a long time on most glaciers where they've actually had positive mass balance," U.S. Geological Survey glaciologist Bruce Molnia told Medred Oct. 13. Similarly, the National Snow and Ice Data Center found that Arctic Sea ice expanded 13.2 percent this year, or a Texas-sized 270,000 square miles.

I totally agree. The 'warmers' have missed the boat. The cooling has begun. I do agree wholeheartedly with the 'warmers' on one thing........ we all need to take care of Mother Earth much better and we do need to shift to alternative energy sources to help clean our environment but in no way has this caused Big Al's Golbal Warming.

Well said.

Taking care of the planet should be a goal of of every civilization throughout mankind.
Scaring everyone into building a multi-trillion dollar orbiting solar shade and sending billions to Al Gore for carbon credits is NUTS!
Even today, people can say, "It's colder than it's been in decades," but the planet is MILLIONS of years old and we are not, in our hottest moments or coldest moments, outside of the cyclical norms.
Do the right thing, but don't be crazy. -

And if the global warming fanatics had used that reason instead of trying to cram their "theory" down everyone's throat something would have been done a long time ago
They need the person who did T Boone's ads - appeal to the majority and you get support
Turn it into a pseudo religion/cult and get scorn
I just hope the hype of the "warmers" haven't alienated so many people that nothing gets done

As for the arctic ice melting (part of the GW proof) I'm thinking that could be taking place because of a change in the jet stream.
Reply
I lived in Fairbanks in the winter of 1976-77, and it was the warmest winter in the century. It never got below 15 below, which was unheard of. It was colder in Cincinnati than Fairbanks that winter. The jet stream went deeper north and deeper south that year, taking it up over Alaska, bringing up the warm air, and taking the cold air far deeper south for the winter.
I don't what could cause this, but I don't think it would mean global warming is doing it.
Anyone else noticed this happening?

yes gwhiddon... I have.

There's been great fluctuations in the jet stream. All I know the planet has it's moods. However, the sun does have an affect on our planet.
I don't want to get in the middle of anything... folks are gonna believe and think what they want. But the Planet is telling us... that things are changing.-

Hi Trez...

Things are changing... but, like you say, the planet has its' moods. Things have been changing for millions of years. CO2 levels have been 20 times what they are today, temperatures have been higher, and temperatures have been lower.
The interesting science that Global Warming Alarmists don't mention is that the relationship between temperature and CO2 is OPPOSITE what Al Gore preaches. Higher temperatures CAUSE buildups in gasses, not the other way around.
Remember the last really hot day last summer? The weatherman came on and said that hot temps were causing a buildup of gasses that would effect air quality... not smog will cause hot weather. Odd how they get it right for the sake of today's weather report, but miss the same message completely the moment Al Gore starts preaching.

From a frozen Canadian all I can say is after the weather we have just had Global warming sounds pretty good to me. The head of the Canadian weather agency said that this is the coldest it has been in over 40 years, Canada has frost in the ground and snow across the entire country, I wonder how long it will take for everyone to switch sides again.

The Farmers Almanac says it's a cooling trend. Many top scientists think it's warming. And the north pole has melted more these past two summers than at any time in recorded history.
Reply
Well I'm glad to know that just because the north pole is melting and scientists suggest there is a warming trend that I can continue to drive my SUV with a clear concience because the farmers Almanac says global warming does not exist. -

I am sorry, but this article is a LIE.

Al Gore says this cooling trend we are in and have been in over the last two years, is just a product of GLOBAL WARMING. Al also wants to remind us all that...
(BLACK is now WHITE) (UP is now DOWN) (LEFT is now RIGHT) and (SMART is now STUPID)
So, don't any of you argue with the GREAT PROPHET AL GORE!
We all know what's coming next...in a few years, after people have forgotten about MAN MADE Global WARMING. Then the ENVIRONMENTALISTS will come out of their holes and start saying that this global COOLING TREND we are now experiencing, is caused by Mans pollution!!!!!!
Wana BET me? I have $5,000 to put down that says that's what's coming from these morons next.
(MANS POLLUTION is causing GLOBAL COOLING) -

Funny how so many here react to the news based on who it's coming from.

If Al Gore says anything, it's all about "fanatics" but when the Farmer's Almanac comes out suddenly I see some of the Conservative stripe eager to sing the praises of Mother Nature and taking care of the planet.
The facts speak for themselves. We didn't lose glaciers for no reason.
Just because someone you don't like is giving you the news doesn't make it wrong.-

Dude, you're in denial. Facts are, the south polar ice cap over the last 2 years has been growing back, it's no longer shrinking, the north cap is greatly slowing down on it's shrinking. The planet has also been getting cooler over the last two years. The writing is on the wall. We are now heading into a global cooling trend. FACTS are, the planet has been cooling and warming ever since time began. So, go ahead and argue the facts. It still does not change the facts. Being in denial does not change facts either. You're better off to just face the facts of life, even if it makes ya look like a flip flopping idiot. People will eventually forget how dumb you and Al Gore are!

when the earth was flat we'd lose ships everyday - when the sun revolved around the earth & we were the center of the universe -ah those were the days - when alchemists could turn base metal into gold who had to worry about recession?

Exploiting the planet and global warming are not related.
Reply
Saying that a global warming denier is favoring exploiting the planet makes no sense. It's like saying that people who like the color blue hate eating strawberries.
WE NEED TO CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. I like to drink clean water and breathe clean air... The sun warms the planet more during some centuries than others. Those two things are not related. Get it?

BTW - Gamahuche, re. your neg of a previous posting of mine, one of the tests to determine mental stability is the ability of one to recognize abstract similes & such - like what does the statement"people who live in glass houses should not throw stones" mean? - bet you think it applies to people who actually live in houses made of glass.
