The "Messiah" was composed in 1741 and premiered in Dublin in the spring of 1742. It's Handel's most famous composition and is among the most popular works in Western choral literature.

Handel's "Messiah" is a presentation of the life of Jesus and its significance according to Christian theology.

The name of the oratorio is taken from Judaism and Christianity's concept of the Messiah ("the anointed one"). In Christianity, Jesus is the Messiah.

Although Handel's Messiah was created for secular theatre and first performed during Lent it became more associated with the Christmas season since Handel's death.

    Hope you enjoy ...

    Merry Christmas, my friends.

I always enjoy hearing this piece and thanks for sharing the history. I learned something, did not know it was first performed during Lent. Now to pass that tidbit on, lol. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I have a soft spot for the Handelian universe. Handel's career was failing, His earlier successes were big but he was on the verge of bankruptcy when he went to Dublin. The Messiah's success saved him. He had trouble finding singers and re- wrote it numerous times to accommodate the vocal talent available at various performances. I believe the Dublin score is the "real" version, though that is controversial.

                Thanks RR,

The original photos were not mine. Except for the Dove and Lilies, I altered the photos added and removed objects from each and added various effects in adobe photoshop. The last picture, I started with a photo of a picture, added flowers by painting them in paint shop and painted the dove which was then pasted into the picture.
