This might be good for one reason. ... ... There are far too many Newspaper owners who are Right Wing Ideologues pushing their Right Wing Perspective through their newspapers.
Reply
For instance, our local paper is the only one in town. The owner was a major financial backer of George W. Bush.
Conrad Black - an extreme extremist right wing nut - was buying newspapers all over the US and Canada. He made no bones that his purpose was to push a far right wing message.
And he was well on his way .......... until he wound up in jail .... for other reasons. Most notably ... theft and duplicity.
Here in our town, every election, it's the same thing ... they endorse every single Republican ... without question. They've lined up every right wing pundit out there ... from Kathleen Parker ... all the way to Walter Williams ... (a nut that has moved so far to the right, he's practically an anarchist.).
Propeller is nice because there are many clear thinkers who expose me to various stories I would not otherwise know about --- given that Corporations ... and friends of Corporations control the spigot of information ... and direct it's flow ... to benefit their Right Wing friends.
For instance, the Right Wing Controlled Mainstream Media refused to talk about how George W. Bush got the city of Arlington to raise taxes to build HIM and his partners a brand new stadium.
When you hear the Right Wing extremists on Propeller chant the word 'Socialism' when they talk about Obama ... I had the information that GW owed his fortune to Socialism.
I also read on the internet how George W. Bush stole 200 acres from middle class citizens in Arlington by using Eminent Domain.
Later, it was through the internet that I learned about John McCain's stunning behavior in his early days.
So ... when the Right Wing Extremists on Propeller began to promote John McCain ... I was able to point out how odd it was that they supported a known adulterer ... when they demonized Clinton for his adultery.
Yes, the Right Wing Bias of Mainstream Media is real -limiting the free flow of information. The internet in general ... and my friends on Propeller represent the REAL Freedom of Information .... and have been a true Information Lifeline to me.

I love newspapers.
Reply
Goes back to my father being an managing editor of one growing up in the midwest...he started out as a reporter, then at the news desk, news editor, etc. So it's sort of engrained in me.
I love Sunday papers...the variety of stories, the detail, the Sunday magazines, (don't forget the comics!) etc.
But they take up so much space when you're done with them (especially if you get a daily and a Sunday, like the NYT), use too many trees and ink (alas, dirty hands), get thrown and land in a puddle or snow instead of on the front steps, and on average, cost more a month than the internet.
While I don't care for reading news or anything else on a monitor, I can archive articles I like, get a story that's breaking (since I work at home on a computer 10-12 hours a day), and get almost any kind of news, in any area, from any country, I like. I also like the videos that are available...they nicely round out the news when not in front of a TV (which is being watched less, too!). Can't always get the detail of a story as easily, but you can't win them all.
Hate to say it, but newspapers have their days numbered. Within 10 years, maybe one or two major ones left, printed 2-3 times a week. In 20 years. I'm not talking small weeklies here, the ones small towns and boroughs have in the corner store...they'll be around a bit longer, to get out the daily news...maybe they'll go monthly, who knows. But they'll be gone someday, too...another thing of the past...

Newspapers??
Reply
For 30 years I used to be an avid cover-to-cover reader of the Guardian weekly and was reluctant to let my subscription lapse. But one Christmas, when funds were short, I let it go and have never missed it.
What I can't get from the Internet I get from the BBC World Service in 3 languages and overall am far better informed than I was before.
Newsprint, IMO, is simply a poor use of trees but I do have a different feeling about books, especially 15th and 16th C manuscripts. Even if they exist in cyberspace nothing makes up for the smell and the paper and the plates and the tactile experience!-

The Guardian has declined in quality as the english-language press became dominated by US media. If you really want good news coverage, it is better to use non-english sources that are not subject to the stereotypes engendered by the US press. It is also useful to use smaller countries as they often have much wider and deeper coverage of world news than bigger countries (that often use their press to "support" propaganda about their "national interests").
Reply
Who knows that the Neue Zurcher Zeitung publishes much more and much better coverage of world news (and opinion) than the Washington Post?
One of my other favorites is El Pais (Spain) which provides the leading coverage of a language and region that exceeds in number and area that of the english-speaking world.
In general, good newspapers (largely abandoned to become propaganda mouthpieces in the US, increasingly so in Britain too) still are better than the internet, where too much garbage is "published". -

For myself, I agree, but what about my Mother that has no desire for a computer at 74? She shouldn't have the opportunity to keep up with her community news, or the millions just like her? For her specifically with Alzheimers closing in, she can spend hours reading it over until she comprehends it, makes her feel as though she can stay connected, gives her something to start a conversation with, even if she has to refer back to the pages to keep up.

Who do they have writing at "My News Channel"?

This is the second article I've seen from them written in very poor english.
Hello!...You call yourselves writers????
That being said, I agree with most of what has already been said here.
The author makes some good points about the availability of local information but for the most part I found his assertions laughable. -

Denying Left Bias in the Media is wrong headed and another of those tell what you want to be true (right wing bias) over the truth (left wing bias) enough then many will believe it.

You know, like McCain is Bush, Obama will bring real change, Bush perpetrated 9/11? The last election cycle is evident that it gets worse as years go by.
All the pro Obama coverage against the anti Bush (Palin) coverage in both print and TV.
Tingles up legs, Crying ‘Reporters” when Obama wins.
News Flash!!!! McCain is a scary old man that is Bush incarnate and his wife is an evil woman. Now for some ‘refreshing’ details about the One that is perfection that will bring us Hope and change along with his perfect wife! Let’s not waste our time with all the side things people are talking about the One unless the outcry becomes so loud we will have to discuss it and try to spin it into just another Hateful racist Plot by the righties!-

How the Media Vote. Surveys of journalists’ self-reported voting habits show them backing the Democratic candidate in every presidential election since 1964, including landslide losers George McGovern, Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis. In 2004, a poll conducted by the University of Connecticut found journalists backed John Kerry over George W. Bush by a greater than two-to-one margin
Reply
How the Public Views the Media. In increasing numbers, the viewing audiences recognize the media’s liberal tilt. Gallup polls have consistently found that three times as many see the media as “too liberal” as see a media that is “too conservative.” A 2005 survey conducted for the American Journalism Review found nearly two-thirds of the public disagreed with the statement, “The news media try to report the news without bias,” and 42 percent of adults disagreed strongly
Admissions of Liberal Bias. A number of journalists have admitted that the majority of their brethren approach the news from a liberal angle. During the 2004 presidential campaign, for example, Newsweek’s Evan Thomas predicted that sympathetic media coverage would boost Kerry’s vote by “maybe 15 points,” which he later revised to five points. In 2005, ex-CBS News President Van Gordon Sauter confessed he stopped watching his old network: “The unremitting liberal orientation finally became too much for me.”
Denials of Liberal Bias. Many journalists continue to deny the liberal bias that taints their profession. During the height of CBS’s forged memo scandal during the 2004 campaign, Dan Rather insisted that the problem wasn’t his bias, it was his anybody who criticized him. “People who are so passionately partisan politically or ideologically committed basically say, ‘Because he won’t report it our way, we’re going to hang something bad around his neck and choke him with it, check him out of existence if we can, if not make him feel great pain,’” Rather told USA Today in September 2004. “They know that I’m fiercely independent and that’s what drives them up a wall.”
Evidence of Bias in News Coverage. The Media Research Center continuously reports on instances of the liberal bias in the mainstream media. Daily CyberAlerts offer a regular roundup of the latest instances of biased reporting, while our NewsBusters blog allows Web users to post their own reactions. Media Reality Check fax reports showcase important stories that the news media have distorted or ignored, and several times each year the MRC publishes Special Reports offering in-depth documentation of the media’s bias on specific issues. -

These oft quoted surveys have little to do with modern reality. As the article itself states, and as we all know, fewer and fewer Americans are getting their news from newspapers.
With surveys, it's all in how you ask the question.
In the end, we are not Republicans, Democrats, or Independents. We are .... each of us .... individuals ... with family issues, health issues, mortgage issues, work issues.
Republicans have historically worked on behalf of Corporations, Big Pharma, Big Oil. Insurance Companies ... etc ... etc ...
ANY human interest story ... by it's very nature ... focuses on an INDIVIDUAL ... it is the INDIVIDUAL who is fighting against a hospital for denying service.
It is the INDIVIDUAL who is fighting against an Insurance company for denying coverage.
It is an INDIVIDUAL who is fighting a Corporation for discrimination.
In almost any case you can think of .... a Republican would fight FOR the Corporation ... and AGAINST the individual.
For survey purposes, this kind of story .... common today in media ... reflects badly for Republicans ... but it's essential truth. It simply cannot ... in good faith ... be claimed to be fundamental bias...... it's a snapshot of what each and every INDIVIDUAL in our nation may be struggling with. In short ... it's news. -

This article was poorly written and is based on a notion that has a very low probability of ever occurring. Why? Because people want to be informed and advertisers don't want to lose any opportunity to market.
Reply
Now,even if newspapers stopped printing hard copies there will always be news outlets through other media venues much as we already enjoy. The problem I have with most news, is the fact that personal bias v. fact is rampant and has been for a long time. I have more respect for news that identifies itself as being biased than those that claim to be just reporting the news and are obviously taking creative liberties to make the stories more entertaining. -

What i would "prefer" to see is NEWS, as it happens, with NO slant what so ever. Let the reader, viewer, etc form their own opinions.

While cons say that the media is left biased, i don't think i have ever seen anything as distorted as the way Fox reports the news. Their reporters generally end up screaming, red faced and appear to have completely lost all control before finishing their version of the news. -

Goppy. I think you win this one hands down. Slate - get real.

And Slate how could you or anyone condone what has transpired these past eight years? Don't you believe in American values?
I consider myself to be an American first and a party last individual.
To the newspapers. I watched a discussion about this very subject on C-Span a few days ago. To a person the newspaper people feel the printed paper to be a Dinosaur. They see the future being strictly on-line.
And when they were asked why, their response was that the Internet provided an opportunity to check out anything that is written. An example would be your and Goppy's discussion. A person pushing an agenda needs to be very careful about what they write on the net because within minutes they will be exposed, but spin in a news paper does not give the opportunity to the public to read the refutations.
Someone above, maybe Goppy, mentioned that his local paper was Conservative. My mainstream newspaper is so conservative that when I asked the Editor if he would permit non-conservative matter in the Political Section ( I'm not speaking of letters to the editor ), he told me that they didn't print political stuff in the Political Section. He didn't have to sneer at me, I could feel the insult even more than a slap in the face.
A non-conservative view has as much of a chance of appearing in my newspaper as a snowball has continuing to exist in hell.
As a final thing. I wrote an article ( another site ) about how Bush and Co-Conspirators were removing regulations on mass media to allow "The Few" to control Media. As I recall we now have less than a dozen truly Independent National media sources left in America. Most of the Media is owned by mega Corporations.-

Yes, sadly, most of those that keep complaining about the "liberal" news forget that corporations own almost all media outlets and have a conservative agenda. Few media outlets have true liberal agendas.

While Right Wing extremists whine and sneer and call Obama a Socialists ... they ignore that George W. Bush went to the CITY of Arlington .... to GOVERNMENT to finance HIS stadium.
Get it, now?
The fellow who went to Washington on a platform that Government IS the problem ... chose GOVERNMENT to solve his problem FIRST.
This ... even though GW and his partners could have easily financed the Stadium with their own money.
Well, not GW. He was just a straw man at that point.

Open mouth and insert foot! Let us re-examine your logic. You conservatives (more like Neocon faithful) think that all media outlets are liberal. Therefore, wouldn't we have had more liberal presidents over the last 30+ years than conservative? I mean the influence of the media should have affected the outcomes of elections because of the "push" for liberals...right? So now, explain to me why only, in 12 of the last 30+ years, a Democratic President has held office.

A term I wouldn't feel misplaced, considering some of the 'up close-es' I've experienced with electronic & pulp versions of 'journalism' claiming to be authorities on this and that... including the supposed 'editing' of comments at this venue... which renders my posts now copied to disc before submission... more proofs for the eternal spike...
