Many Teens Don't Keep Virginity Pledges »
Posted By Jayson 10 months, 2 weeks ago in FamilyTeens who take virginity pledges are just as likely to have sex as teens who don't make such promises -- and they're less likely to practice safe sex to prevent disease or pregnancy, a new study finds. "Previous studies found that pledgers were more likely to delay having sex than non-pledgers," said study author Janet E. Rosenbaum, a post doctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "I used the same data as previous studies but a different statistical method."

This abstinence policy is just not realistic. There is a reason there are over six billion people on this planet. The instinct to procreate is very powerful in humans and to deny that is pure folly. We are after all just another species of animals on this planet and our success is do in no small part to our ability to procreate.

Problem 1
There are many STD's some of which there is no cure for and some others that are approaching that.
Problem 2
There is no such thing as a little bit pregnant. ALL solutions to that have major problems.
Problem 3
There is no such thing as safe sex. Ratings of failures of condoms go from 1 in 8 to 1 in 15 with normal use. Some STD's go right through condoms. Surgical glove are made from a very similar material. CDC has surgeons wash hands, be powdered with antiseptic powder, put on first glove, a second layer of antiseptic powder, and a final glove. This in order to protect the surgeon and patient from each other. Who is going to do this procedure with a condom?
With these three problems in mind what will happen to those who choose to do what the libs like to call safe sex. When the condom fails the people are at risk of getting a disease and the girl is at risk of getting pregnant. If one of them has an STD that goes through the condom then the other person is at risk of getting the disease even with no failure. Both of these happen quite often and people just like to bury their heads in the sand and keep touting safe sex when that does not exist.

And the teenage jesus never tossed one off. And the priests who devote their celibate lives to the baby jesus never bend over an alterboy. And we love the fetus, but the baby is on its own, just pull yourself up by your diaber straps.

Invisible diety, bless Caribu Barbie and all the white trash bible thumpin conservative republicans who are the moral center of this USA tent revival.

Yeah, it does seem like this belongs on the front page of "Duh!" magazine.

To be fair, formal virginity pledging is a relatively new phenomenon and abstinence-only advocates had been pointing to the previous interpretation of the data as a 'win' for their side.
Of course, anyone with a whit of common sense remembers how much stock a teenager will put in a promise once the hormone jar gets handed around.-

Actually, formal virginity-pledging is very ancient indeed, documented in classical Greek and Rome both, a pre-Christian religious matter having to do with the power of purity and sacrifice. The penalty for known violation for the Vestals of Rome was to be thrown from the Tarpeian Rock.

"What have we gained if we encourage young people only to delay sex until they are older, but when they do become sexually active, they don't protect themselves or their partners?"
Reply
Absolutely nothing!
At least in the US this stuff comes up and gets discussed.
But EXPORTNG this to other cultures - Africa for example - really makes no sense at all.
People have completely difference reference points and there never could be a one-size fits all solution - or condom:)-

oN the other hand, exporting abstenence and bible thumping cousin humping teenage pregnacy to africa, (see the movie Caribu Barbie goes to Nigeria) is an excellent way to condemn millions of babies to death from aids, rape victims to unwanted pregnancies, starvation, disease.

Thanks baby jesus, for you have saved the africans from the unholy condom. You have saaved the fetus, and heaven will be full of dead starved children with their tiny arms chopped off.

Seems to me, the ONLY way a somewhat normal teen can avoid sex with the really, sexy, pretty babes that are abundant at that age, is if he or she is REALLY nerdy, or, believes in the Bible. For me, it was the latter, with a bit of the former thrown in. Am I RAGING WITH FURY THAT I MISSED OUT ON ALL OF THAT?!?! I could be, IF I didn't realize there are kids who die of cancer and what not, NEVER getting to experience such a sex time. Besides, God blessed me other ways.

What about being gay and being comitted in a relationship you made with someone half-way across the globe? I realize the "gf/bf in Canada/Japan/Europe/etc" argument is generally a nerdy cop-out for "made up" but there are cases where it's real. I'm 20 and missed out so far, I'm nerdy yeah but not exactly hideous looking.... I'm kinda a paler looking Daniel Radcliffe....or I was when I was 16 eheheh.

come now, let's not insult the child. It's not his fault that his daddy's a white trash supremacist, his momma's in denial and his grandmother is crazy. Just like all those little quacks down in Alabama can't be blamed for their parents having too much of the shine while they were pregnant with them to where they think the Emancipation Proclaimation is a hip-hop band.

One of my regrets is that I wasn't more active sexually as an adolescent. (But, happily, I made up for lost opportunity down the line.)

Effort should be made to ensure that young people understand how to prevent unwanted pregnancy and STDs--after that, youth is for learning, for experiencing the pleasures one's body can offer. -

I keep hearing the word girl.I didn't know a girl could make a pledge, and then break that pledge all by her lonesome. You can call the people in the past hypocrites, but I see the same thing happening now.The girl is a ****,while the boy is just a boy sowing his wild oats.

It seems the stupider you are, the more you have to say about morality. Welcome to tent revival USA, where the baboons are running the asylum.
Guess what, you subhuman creationist moron, you cannot ignore reality. Abstenance does not work, no matter how much you telepathically communiate with your invisible floating baby jew god and wish it so.
Athiests do not own and did not invent statisitcal analysis, which debunks your religious tripe. -
