  Funny how Liberals forget the good things religions do. Countless hospitals have been started by Catholics here and throughout the world. No one cares about that. Christians and Catholic groups send millions to people in need and have started countless charities. What about all the places the homeless can go to that are paid for by religious groups. I Guarantee that Religion has done more to help the homeless than any Liberal has.
  
  So next time you start bashing Religion like the haters you are, there is always good to go with the bad.

    Funny how CONservatives assume Catholics aren't liberals. Or Christians.
    
    Jesus was a liberal.
    
    He overturned the ruling structure and prevailing social structure of the time and embraced the poor, suffering, and marginalized.
    
    Social Justice certainly isn't a conservative movement.
    
    Please stop trying to hijack Catholicism as a "conservative" religion. Haven't your kind done enough to destroy Protestant Christianity?

        I didn't portray Protestants as conservatives. I said that Conservatives have done quite a bit to destroy Protestant Christianity and its roots, moral imperatives to care for those who remain uncared for and the marginalized as Christ did.

        True enough. Liberals on Propeller are just as bad as Conservatives when it comes to pigeonholing people based on religious tradition (be it Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, et cetera).

        You obviously do not understand the difference between conservative Christian and Christian conservatives.
        
        A conservative Christian is one who believe the Bible is the word of God and not just part of it. They also believe that God said what he meant.
        
        A Cristian conservative is a Christian who's political beliefs are conservative. There are liberal and moderate Christians as well. However the libs like to lump them all into conservatives.
        
        The most absolute conservative denomination is the Catholic Church. The most liberal is the Unitarian. Catholics believe that as a denomination standard that the Bible is the written word of God and most of it is to be taken literally. Prophetic books like Revelation and others written like that are the only ones not to be taken literally. The Unitarian Church as a denominational standard believe that any way to God is acceptable. Taking the Bible literally is fine as well as rejecting it out of hand is acceptable. The Unitarians leave that up to the individual.

        That's a nice theory. In what language did God say what 'He' meant? How do conservative Christians justify the Gospel of Wealth in light of the beatitude assertion that "Blessed are the poor? (Luke)" Because it's not "poor in spirit," but in the Greek, ptochoi, - the literally wretched poor.
        
        We could discuss more examples of just what God meant with regards to slavery in Exodus if you want. But there's a fairly large hypocracy in claims that Conservative Christians 'believe that God said what 'He' meant.

        'Libs' and 'Cons' both lump Christians into groups or generalize about religious traditions (for example Islam from the Con stance). Neither one does a better job.

        Well yes and no. Catholics do not believe that most of it is to be taken literally. Go to an RCIA class if you want, or ask your local priest. They'll tell you that the Church does not have an "official" position on the literal historicity of Bible stories. Whether they are are not literal has no bearing on whether the lesson they impart is true. Catholics are free to understand them as literal or not. The Church only insists that the Bible is inspired and inerrant and that what it teaches is the truth.

        I've found the Unitarian Church to be fairly anti-Christian, often gathering those who have been abused in Christian churches together but falling into the trap of abusing Christianity as a religious tradition. That, plus the "all paths lead to God" theory often ends up in a weak, watered down theology (but doesn't have to). I wouldn't really call them Christians, but perhaps extremist liberals.

        In terms of conserving traditions, sure. Not the most conservative in terms of theology or in terms of social conservatism v. social liberalism. Certainly not in terms of Biblical interpretation.

    I negged this because it is a straw man. No one has claimed that religion hasn't done good things for the world. Some of us, however, believe in doing good without resorting to ancient belief systems that preach hell and damnation for all eternity for unbelievers, which a perfectly forgiving God would simply not do. 8)
