""This is not an argument about free speech," he said in an email to The Associated Press. "We have laws about the sort of material that is acceptable across all mediums and the Internet is no different. Currently, some material is banned and we are simply seeking to use technology to ensure those bans are working.""

This is a hard call to make, how do you protect children and others from the garbage on the net??? There are laws regarding the media, i.e the tv, radio, print, etc on what they can broadcast or print on the public access, but you can buy porn.
How do you control the internet?? I don't think you can but at least it isn't as easily accessed by inquiring young minds if there is a filter. Or should it be left to the parents to filter? But just like alcohol, if it is around they get to it.
Good post gm, makes you think about whats best for society on a whole. We all ready know what happens when people are "desensitized". -

Ok, but actually doesn't the criminal always manage their way around the laws? And, don't the restrictions just make it more difficult for the average law abiding citizen? And, could it be that the government is pulling the usual: 'This is best for you,' routine when in fact they solely seek more control over the masses in order to meet their own agenda? And, if the country is truly a democracy and the people largely oppose the new law... it is not obvious that the government should listen to the people it serves? Lastly, it is the responsibility and first priority of the parent(s) to give their children their best: what they know, time, attention, love, protection etc.

In my country - Canada, (which is considering the same internet restriction,) a parent is responsible for the actions of the 'child' until they are 18. Is that changing? No, so how does making the internet less accessible for all become a viable excuse to restrict it? I have raised 2 kids on my own and I take this responsibility seriously. If I can do it, (so can many - and they do,) then we should not 'need' more government intervention to pretend that they can protect my children for me with some new laws.
It is too easy to do this. They could try to find the source of the problems and address them there and then the government would be doing it's job and not relying on technology at the the expense of their own citizens. The thing is, they can barely catch any of these predators, or they would. I really doubt any of these hard core criminals are the least bit concerned about their deeds. Usually if you up the anti, it just raises the bar in the other direction. Getting tough is fine, just target the right area for once!-

I agree, trace the ISP then destroy the machines!!!!!! Just like grow houses, seek and destroy!!! I think that would be the best solution.
