Strong sunlight bathes its open plains, and powerful winds stream through its mountain passes. Fractures in the earth along fault lines heat pools of underground water - perfect for geothermal power plants. There is, however, a problem. Most Californians don't live there.

Very interesting article. I've been semi-involved with Illinois electrical deregulation, and it's suffered because of some of the considerations that this article points out. Renewable energy is nice; but it opens its own cans of worms and inevitably raises questions about the power grid.

Probably not the solutions themselves. But the money to buy them and the will to build them may be another thing. Much of the stuff we've seen promoting renewable uses "cheap" or 'free". It's certainly not free; and may not even be cheap if you have to provide massive capital for delivery and reliability. One has to wonder whether there's some price at which the public may just say that they don't want it.
