The Southern California desert could produce a gusher of renewable energy. Strong sunlight bathes its open plains, and powerful winds stream through its mountain passes. Fractures in the earth along fault lines heat pools of underground water - perfect for geothermal power plants. There is, however, a problem. Most Californians don't live there.

    Very interesting article. I've been semi-involved with Illinois electrical deregulation, and it's suffered because of some of the considerations that this article points out. Renewable energy is nice; but it opens its own cans of worms and inevitably raises questions about the power grid.

      The best message I get fom this article is that there is progress being mapped out, the problems considered, solutions can't be far behind.
