  Smoking should be banned in all indoor facilities. Nobody should have to breathe second hand smoke.

  It's a repulsive habit, and were it up to me would be banned completely. I've watched (and cheered) over the years as workplace after workplace has instituted bans. The unions used to fight it, but by and large don't anymore. They've got access to research as well; and they don't want to be on the bad PR end of increasing healthcare costs.
  
  That having been said, when you go public like these guys have, you'd better have all your statistical ducks in a row.

    Go ahead...try to make smoking against the law...there's a reason it's not,that whole "free country" thing.
    You nannies who "think it's repulsive" must not know how it was before Reagan got you started on labeling people second class citizens.Watch any old movie,you see people lighting up and nobody around them complaining and weezing with their fake little coughs.And thats just the way it was in life...it's called respect.The same people who support these nanny laws would drive their Hummer to an anti-smoking rally.
    
    I find it strange that the govt would spend millions on insulting commercials but when I go into the store,the cigs cost $40 and right next to them the quit smoking kits cost $120.If the govt cared that much why not save the wasted money on commercials and just buy smokers the kit?
    You're not going to shame us into quitting.

      I quit this year... man it makes a difference in my life... i feel much better. now if people wish to smoke...let them. i do support the non smoking in public places...I have supported that for years. when I traveled a lot by plane...wayyyy back...smoking was allowed in planes and breathing was difficult even for smokers. Going to a restaurant or club now is better as well.

      You know it ain't gonna happen, much as I'd like it too. That's one of those things that you just sort of grin and bear, like many things in life. There really are reasons why. On second hand smoke, the case can be made that you're hurting someone else. Individual smoking is sort of parallel to wearing seat belts. The people who don't do it are the ones who get hurt. As an old guy I once knew observed (on another subject), "My boy, if people want to kill themselves, there's nothing much you can do about it."
      
      Workplaces are sort of a special situation. Smokers DO hurt others. And (ask any building utility manager) smoking runs up HVAC costs. So there are real bucks involved. And I've seen unions lean on members because otherwise everyone is going to pay $15/month more for health insurance. I think that the big hit comes when one gets into privately paid health insurance. I got knocked up a whole level on the cost scale for having marginally high blood pressure. Smoking is a big time hit.
      
      My municipal friends who have worked with this tell me that shame really doesn't work as a tool in getting people to quit-- at least not the organized kind. But it works pretty well even if you don't try to use it. Holding up a meeting because some guy is coming back from the smoking area three floors down and on the other side of the office complex sends a pretty powerful message. May not affect what the guy does at home (that's his business until and if somehow it becomes yours). But peer pressure is pretty powerful.
      
      In my business (chemical manufacturing), I first noticed anti-smoking programs on the salaried level in the mid-1970's. Took about 10 years or so for the unions to get on board--think ultimately they wanted to stay on the right side of the health insurance gods. Now the programs are everywhere. They're only optional if you don't mind your boss staring down his nose at you all the time.
      
      Yeah, I've seen all the old time movies too. Most comapnies will say that that was then and this is now. Cynically, all sorts of reasons can be found if money's involved. On the intangible side, if 90% of all prospective employees think that a non-smoking environment is "better" (made-up number--don't know what it is), as an employer you'd better be there.
      
      I really don't think the habit will ever be eradicated. It's got a 400-year head start and is too firmly entrenched. Plus realisically there will always be people impervious to everything. But one can hope.
