Comments for Disinformation, secrecy and lies: How the Gaza offensive came about »

Long-term preparation, careful gathering of information, secret discussions, operational deception and the misleading of the public - all these stood behind the Israel Defense Forces "Cast Lead" operation against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, which began Saturday morning.

The disinformation effort, according to defense officials, took Hamas by surprise and served to significantly increase the number of its casualties in the strike.

Sources in the defense establishment said Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the operation over six months ago, even as Israel was beginning to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. According to the sources, Barak maintained that although the lull would allow Hamas to prepare for a showdown with Israel, the Israeli army needed time to prepare, as well.

Barak gave orders to carry out a comprehensive intelligence-gathering drive which sought to map out Hamas' security infrastructure, along with that of other militant organizations operating in the Strip.

          > The Soviet Union didn't exterminate the Afghans.

I do not recall that the Afghans tried to destroy the Soviet Union at the time, Candida, therefore the Soviets had the option to leave. If htey were determined to do it Afghanistan would be no more.

Israel does not have a luxury to withdraw knowing that by doing it it will end the war.

No, Israelis did not beleive in that as the fact that they've done their homework preparing to this new wave of violence demonstrated.

On the other hand, Israelis did and do everything in their abilities to REDUCE the number of Palestinian civilian casualties. If it was not the case the number of Palestinians killed during an average day of the terrorist war they've started in September, 2000 would be much higher than 1.6.

From the article header: "Sources in the defense establishment said Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the operation over six months ago, even as Israel was beginning to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with Hamas."

It would appear that Barak was preparing for Hamas CAPABILITIES and not necessarily their intentions - something all competent war strategists must do.

Teranchik, I enjoy your posts, but I really can't think of a solution for this problem. Seriously, do you have any suggestions on how this seemingly interminable exchange of bloodshed might be resolved to the acceptance and benefit of all combatants ???

That's a HUGE tough question teech and I am but a lowly hairdresser but I'll give it my best shot.

One country, everybody equal citizens with equal rights. Muslim , Jew, Christian, Hindu what ever. No walls, no settlements. Equal representation in government. Everyone needs to have their say. No one is invisible. Had the group of people living here in the 30s and 40s been included in the plans....who knows where we'd be now. Jerusalem stays as it is now with all religions able to worship there. This is where I'll get into trouble but I think reparations to the previous dwellers is something that has to happen. I know this isn't very detailed and it's a very simple, general plan with lots of compromise, but If it were to happen I think the whole middle east could calm down at least take one thorn out of the lion's paw.

              oh ya---get the U.S. OUT!

Great idea, Tehranchik. Try to sell it to the Arabs. If you succeed the'll establish "one country, everybody equal citizens with equal rights. Muslim , Jew, Christian, Hindu what ever. No walls, no settlements. Equal representation in government. Everyone needs to have their say. No one is invisible. " in the ARAB world.

If and when they'll succeed and Israelis will be convinced that this is indeed a better option they'll join, too.

                GOOD LUCK!

This map of Palestine/Israel is why I see a need for reparations.

While this map is a lie (it assumes that EVERYTHING that does not belong to the Jews belong to the Arabs which is, obviously, not the case) it shows a TREND. A trend of consequences of continued Arab refusal to make peace with Israel.

As I've said earlier the longer the Arabs will continue rejecting a peaceful solution the less Israel will offer to them.

It's not that complicated. Recognize Israel. Hamas won't because their Iranian puppetmasters don't want them to. Stop attacking Israelis. Do something for their own people. Explore peace talks. That's it. Israel is willing, but it will not negotiate with someone whose charter calls for its destruction. Would you?

From the very beginning, Israel relied on propaganda and strength, not genuine negotiation.

'Ben-Gurion had a realistic view of the strong attachment of Palestinian Arabs to the land. In 1938 he said: 'In our political argument abroad we minimize Arab opposition to us. But let us not ignore the truth among ourselves. [...] A people which fights against the usurpation of its land will not tire so easily.'[1] According to Flapan, Ben-Gurion's assessment of Arab feelings led him to emphasize the need to build up Jewish military strength: 'I believe in our power, in our power which will grow, and if it will grow agreement will come...'.'
