The Soviet Union didn't exterminate the Afghans.

  I do not recall that the Afghans tried to destroy the Soviet Union at the time, Candida, therefore the Soviets had the option to leave. If htey were determined to do it Afghanistan would be no more.
  
  Israel does not have a luxury to withdraw knowing that by doing it it will end the war.
