This is a very meaningful issue for me.
As I've often said, I voted for many Republicans in my younger years. Republicans were a great party throughout the 60's and early 70's as I was beginning my interest in politics.
I can dispassionately recognize the accomplishments of Richard Nixon even as I realize how dangerous his political behavior was.
I had a great deal of respect for Gerald Ford.
When I was growing up, every Republican I knew was straight-ahead pragmatic, maybe somewhat stodgy, but very sensible and reasonable.
But that all changed when Newt Gingrich brought his 'Scorched-Earth' style to DC. He almost single-handedly changed the Republican Party into a rabid pack of attack dogs who no longer had personal dignity or valor.
And ever the Machiavellian and lusting after the mailing addresses that Jerry Falwell had assembled, he made overtures and wooed the leaders of the Christian Evangelicals and merged the two 'movements'.
That's when it came to pass that ... Republicans no longer relied on their cogent arguments to win the day ... they began to bludgeon their opponents as being essentially immoral.
And of course, the Christian Evangelicals lost as well. They could no longer claim their goal was a personal Spiritual Awakening ... now ... America sees them as just another Solid Political Block ... to be given automatically to the Republicans ... and ignored.
.
There were NO winners in Newt Gingrich's 'Republican Revolution' OR his "Contract With America" ...
But I ask y'all ... what would ANYONE have expected from such a despicable character? Did anyone stop and think ... do we REALLY want this Pugnacious, Highly Partisan, Adulterous Hypocrite to define the GOP?
As it turned out ... the Post 'Republican Revolution' is more of a reflection of Newt Gingrich than any could have imagined.
