        al taqiyya:
        I read a bit about it the other day.
        My take is that it is one of the many things that separate the Shia from the Sunni.
        Basically the shia believe that the blood from Mohammad’s daughter Fatima is the correct way to categorize the importance of the disciples of Islam.
        They have always been the minority and have faced persecution and allowed the use of words that conflicted with beliefs if it saved folks from torture or death.

            I have been paying attention:
            I found the word very interesting.
            As I understand it: altaqiyya is considered an important survival mechanism for the Shia.
            It appears to me that the interrogators in Iraq where facing an ancient form of disinformation.
            This had to be one of the worst "Command Responsibility" decisions ever made.

              Sorry: compelled to do a little FTA from the link:
              "6. (S) I find that the intentional abuse of detainees by military police personnel included the following acts:

              1. (S) Punching, slapping, and kicking detainees;
              jumping on their naked feet;

              2. (S) Videotaping and photographing naked male and
              female detainees;

              3. (S) Forcibly arranging detainees in various
              sexually explicit positions for photographing;

              4. (S) Forcing detainees to remove their clothing and
              keeping them naked for several days at a time;

              5. (S) Forcing naked male detainees to wear women's
              underwear;

              6. (S) Forcing groups of male detainees to masturbate
              themselves while being photographed and videotaped;

              7. (S) Arranging naked male detainees in a pile and
              then jumping on them;

              8. (S) Positioning a naked detainee on a MRE Box,
              with a sandbag on his head, and attaching wires to his
              sfingers, toes, and penis to simulate electric torture;

              9. (S) Writing "I am a Rapest" (sic) on the leg of a
              detainee alleged to have forcibly raped a 15-year old
              fellow detainee, and then photographing him naked;

              10. (S) Placing a dog chain or strap around a naked
              detainee's neck and having a female Soldier pose for a
              picture;

              11. (S) A male MP guard having sex with a female
              detainee;

              12. (S) Using military working dogs (without muzzles)
              to intimidate and frighten detainees, and in at least
              one case biting and severely injuring a detainee;

              13. (S) Taking photographs of dead Iraqi detainees.
              (ANNEXES 26 and 26)

              8. (U) In addition, several detainees also described the following acts of abuse, which under the circumstances, I find credible based on the clarity of their statements and supporting evidence provided by other witnesses (ANNEX 26):

              1. (U) Breaking chemical lights and pouring the
              phosphoric liquid on detainees;

              2. (U) Threatening detainees with a charged 9mm pistol;

              3. (U) Pouring cold water on naked detainees;

              4. (U) Beating detainees with a broom handle and a
              chair;

              5. (U) Threatening male detainees with rape;

              6. (U) Allowing a military police guard to stitch the
              wound of a detainee who was injured after being slammed
              against the wall in his cell;

              7. (U) Sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and
              perhaps a broom stick.

              8. h. (U) Using military working dogs to frighten and
              intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one
              instance actually biting a detainee."

                And they have been doing that every day the detainees have been there. Is that what you are implying. It seems like it. Put forth the facts of how much it was done and if anything was done about it. Otherwise you are just giving out propaganda and not information.

                  It was not my intent to imply that this has been an ongoing event.
                  I have read General Petreas's Counter insurgency manual, and am sure that he would have strongly denounced such activity, and stopped it if he had known.
                  The actions brought shame on our warriors and placed them in greater danger.
                  To deny that it happened at all would be a hollow form of Al taqiyya,
                  and would bring even more shame on our troops, and ourselves.
                  The Intent is to win the “hearts and minds” of the population, from what I have read that is the only way to win a counter insurgency.
                  From what I have read about the SERE techniques they where developed from the way our soldiers where treated in communist Asia, and where used to persuade a false confession, to be used for propaganda.
                  So even if the techniques worked to get correct intelligence from most of the population, it seems they would have been less than effective with Shia Muslims.

          Al taqiyya is a lying when it is permissible to lie. One of the lies perpetuated is that it is only permitted to protect yourself from death or torture. The key verse is the following.

          "Let not the believers take the disbelievers as Awliyaa' (supporters, helpers) instead of the believers, and whoever does that, will never be helped by Allaah in any way, except if you indeed fear a danger from them" [Aal 'Imraan 3:28]

          From this verse a Muslim can lie to non Muslims and act like friend. If he is really a friend then he is not considered a Muslim any more. The fear can be just a mental fear of being treated like an outsider. Some Muslims who converted to Christianity talked about it and it was put in a book. They said they acted angry when the scuds hit our troops in the first Gulf War but when they gathered around in a group and watched it with fellow Muslims they cheered. So they can lie about their beliefs to any non Muslim if they feel just a little bit threatened or if they have a need to defend Islam.

            That is a clever argument.
            My eyes have grown tired from reading about it.
            I will not refute your statement.
            But I do wonder if it could also go the other way?
