Comments for Bigger Than Bush »
Posted By gamahuche 11 months ago in Political NewsAs the new Democratic majority prepares to take power, Republicans have become, as Phil Gramm might put it, a party of whiners.
Some of the whining almost defies belief. Did Alberto Gonzales, the former attorney general, really say, “I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror”? Did Rush Limbaugh really suggest that the financial crisis was the result of a conspiracy, masterminded by that evil genius Chuck Schumer?
But most of the whining takes the form of claims that the Bush administration’s failure was simply a matter of bad luck — either the bad luck of President Bush himself, who just happened to have disasters happen on his watch, or the bad luck of the G.O.P., which just happened to send the wrong man to the White House.

Will the Republicans eventually stage a comeback? Yes, of course. But barring some huge missteps by Mr. Obama, that will not happen until they stop whining and look at what really went wrong. And when they do, they will discover that they need to get in touch with the real “real America,” a country that is more diverse, more tolerant, and more demanding of effective government than is dreamt of in their political philosophy.

So how long will they need to stop whining? 10 years?-

10 years sounds about right. Wasn't it something like '97 or '99 that Labour came to power in the UK again? Now, about 10 years later, the Tories seem to be coming back. It could serve as a good indicator of things, for the GOP. These things are rather cyclic, normally. Events are rather extraordinary now, economically speaking, so who knows what will happen?

Based on many of the posts here I read from those on the right, Republicans either don't know or they don't care why the vast majority of black people support the Democratic Party. Why else would they refuse to steer clear of racial "humor"? They act as if this is the only subject that can be mined for a joke so I guess they're either a glutton for punishment or they simply don't care.

Spike lee and sociologists are Republican now are they. They are the ones who created the "Magic Negro" for the roles that the blacks played in movies. A black writer for the LA Times wrote a story "Obama the 'Magic Negro'" on March 19, 2007.

--Endo, sometimes your posts give me serious indigestion. I said REPUBLICANS should avoid racial humor (which should be common sense given that blacks and other minorities avoid the GOP). I didn't say racial humor was bad in general. The GOP should steer clear of racial humor. That's all.
"Read it and weep. A black man tied the moniker on Obama.almost 21 months ago. It was published in a liberal paper. Go and whine at them why don't you."
--The REASON that the GOP should stop trying to joke about race is because you don't get it. You don't get that just because someone else said it first (two black men at that) and weren't criticized doesn't mean it's good PR for the GOP to repeat the joke. WHY do you people feel it's always a good idea to exercise your right to speak freely? Also, I had no idea all sociologist were Democrats until you told me. Thanks for that.

WTH?????? Obama didn't create the financial problem so we Libs, Dems, Centrists, Independents will not be holding him accountable for fixing the problem.....we are grateful that he wanted the opportunity to try and fix the problem but we won't be disappointed if he can't. We do know he will do the best that he can with the f'd up mess that has been left for him.

--Endo, what you fail to comprehend is that no matter what Obama accomplishes or doesn't accomplish during his administration, Republicans never seem to learn from their extreme failure and obscene arrogance. It's highly unlikely they will have changed in four or even 8 years. The fact that you stubbornly ignore my advice (and continue to make thoroughly delusional predictions about GOP victories--even as the Republicans continue there slow, sad, disgraceful descent into chaos and ruin) makes me very confident of this. So you people just keep on obsessing over Obama's birth certificate and ACORN and Ayers and Wright and forget that the American public REJECTED the GOP (very decisively so, I believe). That kind of behavior should draw lots of people to the GOP. ;-P

Seem to be that the only thing that gets Neocon's jollys up is attempting to tie Obama to some kind of criminal involvement. Don't worry, I'm sure Sean or Rush with come up with something outlandish soon enough before depression of them having to look at themselves sets in.

so crespi what is a necon anyway, I thought that was something Comrade Mathews came up with. Sage you have a point I can't take Hannity anymore no one cares about Resko, Wright, Blogo, or any other so called scandal. I think that the republicans had a chance when GWB took office to do some real economic work on this country and they blew it. So it's up to Obama, Reid and Pelosi to show us their stuff. I am holding my nose and going to sit and watch, If they do a good job I will congratulate them and the left. All this name calling and hate has to stop. The parties will never work together so lets get behind the pres we have and let him put up or shut up,.

Is that enough to give you the general idea?
What name calling? It was a term they all used to DESCRIBE THEMSELVES and their biases and their disastrous policies.
Mustn't revise history here. It was their own words.-

Corruption and anti American rhetoric have no meaning any more. What a concept. I guess that is why the liberals hated Palin so much. She fought corruption. That was naughty of her. She was responsible for sending her own party chairman to a whopping big fine.

Krugman hits the nail on the head when he refers to the Republican Party's racist and reactionary base.

They took advantage of the chaos of the sixties and seventies and offered America a return to order which the mainstream was looking for at the time.
The Carter presidency was the straw that broke the camel's back.
From the Iranian Hostage crisis to Stagflation, the disarray was palpable.
Regan was just what the doctor ordered.
A strongman cowboy who would lead the nation back on the trail to rightousness.
Seems to me, from that time til now the Republicans had the political High Ground.
Had Daddy Bush any modicum of political savvy and Clinton would've been just another also-ran.
So it's taken almost thirty years for the Right to cook it's own goose...And the countrys!
All the tenets it's used to divide and conquer are no longer foregone conclusions and just as the author notes, it appears this new reality hasn't quite sunk in with all just yet. -

Bush's legacy is a stinking turd. We'll likely find out he's guilty of even worse "spying" crimes on Americans than Nixon.
The Republicans need a "military enemy" to stay in power. Could that be why Bush never found Bin Laden?
Was it planned from the beginning, like a false flag to cover up warrantless eavesdropping?-
