I agree to a point. Discipline releases us from our impulses. But the laws and structure of the universe could fly apart in a moment of increased chaos and be gone forever. But stability does help as long as it doesn't result in inflexibility and a loss of ability to adapt.

Simpleminded feel good pablum without any substance. Stalin and Hitler believed in discipline. So does the Pope. Whose discipline?

As for the scientific claims, these are not even accurate. Apparently the authors have never heard of things like stochastic development.
Analytic formulas for discrete stochastic models of cell populations with both differentiation and de-differentiation.

"Similarly, society too has to be regulated by a certain code of conduct. In fact, discipline is important for civilized existence. A disciplined citizen will not only fight for his rights, but also allow others to exercise their rights.">>>

I have to agree that it doesn't "ring quite right." Too open to interpretation. What " code of conduct" is that he's talking about? And if he wants people to be 'allowed to exercise their rights', would that not include the right to be different? Hmmm. Too subjective for me.

Wiki. Discipline to seek the Goal, a focus on your mission, both well and proper. But to me the most necessary things to being a good citizen are morality, ethical behavior, and fidelity of your promises.

If you have these traits, and maintain them, you are a disciplined, focused, person. -

MMMMMHH...I AM NOT SO SURE, ANYTHING THAT GETS TOO EXTREME ENDS UP FALLING AND DAMAGING PEOPLE. THE NAZIS WERE SUPER-DISCIPLINED,BUT THEY USED THEIR ORDER TO HURT MILLIONS OF INNOCENTS AND WREAK HAVOC IN EUROPE AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

SURE, DISCIPLINE THAT GETS US OUT OF BED AND SHOW UP ON TIME FOR WORK IS VERY NECESSARY. BUT RIGID SYSTEMS? NO. -

DOES THE UNIVERSE "THINK"? I DO NOT NOW. SEE, OUTSIDE THIS PLANET, WE DO NOT EXIST (VERY COMPLEX PHYSICS THEORY). IF SO, WE LIVE IN A BUBBLE. THAT WOULD EXPLAIN ALL THE CLAIMS OF SPIRITS, ETC. I DID NOT MAJOR IN PHYSICS, HOWEVER, SINCE ASTRONAUTS WOULD DISINTEGRATE IF THEY DID NOT WEAR SPECIAL SUITS AND BREATHING SUPPLIES, THAT SHOWS HUMAN FORMS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT OUT IN THE UNIVERSE. I READ LONG AGO THAT THE EARTH WAS FORMED BY ACCIDENT . SO MUCH FOR THE "DISCIPLINE OF THE UNIVERSE". ACTUALLY WE MAY BE A KIND OF BRIDGE TO INTRODUCE ALIVE FORMS TO SPACE. IS THE UNIVERSE READY FOR US?

NOW, ARE THERE MORE PLANETARY ENTITIES OUT THERE WHO DO HAVE TRAITS TO SURVIVE IN SPACE LIKE WE HUMANS DO HERE ON EARTH? -

Wow, reading all these posts I feel convinced some of you didn't read the story. Or maybe it's me. I did not see anything about 'man' made laws, Nazis or communism here.

I thought this was a clear, well written article that presented as fairly straight forward. To me it encouraged us to relearn and develop the almost forgotten skills of personal responsibility and co-operation that are necessary individually, nationally, and globally in order to survive.
The first world nations need to take our example from Nature, actualize co-operation among ourselves and then act like the parent and take that to the world.
No time left for whining.-

We learn meanings and they become almost hard-wired, so of course people would also react to their personal understanding of words. I teach, and I notice that a textbook can give a very specific definition, and even after reading it, students quickly revert to their common understanding of a word.

Um. Who sets these rules?? Folks here are legitimately picking up a whiff of something in this article. Meanwhile, here's hoping the Sun and Moon don't try to get all liberal on us:)

right on. most people i come across do not like discipline...namely when it comes to working out and getting in shape, and other aspiring activities. they like to talk about it but when it comes to doing, they back out. something must be missing...they must not have a compelling reason to attain those results or something.

Your right, people lived way over their means. Some people tried to better than families life, make some money and live the american dream. Where were the people in charge that were giving all those credit cards and mortgages to people they knew can not afford them. A guy making 30000 a year, got 75,000 in credit cards and bought a 300,000 house. He or she should of realized they could not afford it, but all those people that were there to so no to him, made millions off tranactions like this one. There is alot of people to blame.

I think most people see discipline as a dirty word or a synonym for punishment or suffering. Perhaps if they should try seeing it as self regulation- but not the same kind of self regulation that Wall St practices! A moral self governing.

Discipline is fine but humans are not machines and we are subject to whims and impulses that are part of our biology. Discipline is also overrated when it stifles initiative and creativity. Many artists are irritating people because they are more passionate than disciplined, but it doesn't rob their contribution of its value. During the second world war, Japanese troops were so disciplined, they were no good at improvising and this made them predictable and easier to defeat near the end of the war. This same discipline is causing economic stagnation in Japan now. As with most good qualities that we try to instill in people, discipline has its place but also its limitations. For me, as a warm blooded mammal that feels, some part of life must remain spontaneous, unpredictable, and mysterious without the need to be justified, rationalized, quantified, or classified.

I fully believe that discipline is a valid means by which to enjoy peace and harmony ... within a family or between nations. I'm disheartened everytime I see young (or not so young) parents allowing totally wild behavior in their childred. Who do they think will control these children when they're 12 or 15? Certainly not those parents. They lost their crediblilty ten years earlier. I'm aware that the world's problems don't hinge on child discipline ... but I don't think it's a stretch to believe that many of our nation's ills can be traced to whole generations of people who've never heard the words "nice people don't act that way."

Discipline guides the 96% of us who have conscience. The other 4% don't because they are sociopaths and devoid of conscience or remorse they take advantage of the rest of us. They're the majority of the problem because they're unencumbered by the societal norms that guide the rest of us and they see everyone but themselves as wrong. They rise to their levels of incompetence using lie, deception, betrayal and sheer arrogance and then once there decide what's best for the rest of us while enriching themselves in the process. Sound like anyone you know? Google 'Profile of the Sociopath' and see for yourselves why chaos regularly dominates order whenever humans are involved.

I think this paragraph sums up my attitude towards discipline:
Reply
"However, discipline does not mean negation of personal liberty. It means a self imposed restraint and maintenance of ethical values, which is very much necessary in every sphere in life." -
