Freiburg, Germany Solar Panels | Solar Panels - Green Power »
Posted By PMolinero 11 months, 3 weeks ago in Science & TechnologyIn a relatively small village in Germany in the Black Forest , many residents have covered their rooftops with solar panels, which generate more solar energy than they can use. The cost is offset in part by energy bills that are as much as 5 times less than other homes that are not solar powered.

Unless the cost of electricity is very high there the only way they will get the money out of those panels is to have them for well over 10 years. that does not include the cost of the batteries, inverter, etc. Batteries are not cheap and have to be replaced periodically.

Batteries are only expensive if you use them. You could instead be hooked into the grid using a synchronized inverter. That way if the sun is down you use the grid, and, when it is bright the grid uses you. this way you rarely have an electric bill, instead the electric company pays you.

Seems that other countries recognize the need to move to renewable energy...

The share of electricity from renewable energy in Germany has increased from 6.3 percent in 2000 to over 14 percent in 2007. More than 9 billion euros (US$11.31 billion) was invested in new renewable energy installations in Germany in 2006. Some 240,000 people in Germany were employed in the renewable energy sector in 2006, especially in small and medium sized companies. Over half of these jobs are attributed to the Renewable Energy Sources Act..
seems like 11 billion to add 240000 jobs and produce renewable electricity virtually without pollution... would be a good thing in most peoples minds...-

The article isn't accurate. In order to do anything close to that you would have to multiply your electric bill 10 times to get close. We're over taxed as it is right now. The one area your notes on German investment fails to mention is how Germany is paying for this. Each EU member has a limit of how many Euros they can create. Germany and France over produced for the 10th year in a row. They're spending tax money even faster than the US is. This "prosperity" you're claiming is being paid for it with junk bonds. You cannot tax your way to success.

Germany's renewable energy sector is among the most innovative and successful worldwide. Nordex, Repower, and Enercon are wind power companies based in Germany. SolarWorld and Conergy are solar power companies based in Germany. These companies dominate the world market. Every third solar panel and every second wind rotor is made in Germany, and German turbines and generators used in hydro energy generation are among the most popular worldwide.[19]

Nearly 800,000 people work in the German environment technology sector; an estimated 214,000 people work with renewables in Germany, up from 157,000 in 2004, an increase of 36 percent.[19]
Germany's main competitor is Japan, with which it dominates the solar energy sector

I's like to know where you're getting your numbers from. First, the leader in wind generation is actually a little firm called GE Zenith and their controls for the most part are from ABB. In the hydro world, the leaders are Siemens and ABB. As to world markets, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Most power plants going up today are in Asia. Most are coal, gas or a mix of the two. There are some dams but they're very expensive and the left is always finding something to save, plants, cities or whatever.

Solar, with current technologies will never be able to replace current energy needs. You don't have the space nor infrastructure to get the power where you need it.

Gee a paper written completely objectively on solar power from a site called solarpanelspower. I think it's a great idea. Let the German's who haven't built a street ready car for Europe that can meet our clean air standards sell you on the idea of solar panels. Freiburg is one of the most liberal cities in all of Germany and I don't believe most of what they're trying to claim. I work in the power world it's simply not there yet.

You play to your audience. If you can make something to meet the criteria in Europe for less than you can make it to meet the criteria in the US, why would you put yourself at a disadvantage in Europe?
The only thing you are suggesting is that the industry purposefully drags its feet toward innovation and progress. The same could be said for almost any part of the energy industry. They don't want to change the industry, they want to control the industry.
"Freiburg is one of the most liberal cities in all of Germany and I don't believe most of what they're trying to claim."
This is the basis of your decision-making process? Yikes! Great ideas come from both sides of the fence. Using your logic, you are indiscriminately eliminating half of the talent pool based upon a political stance. You are part of the problem in this country. We are all part of the problem and it will take all of us to attempt to solve it.
The irony is that you have supported the liberal decision-making and actions of the current admin for the last 8 years. You are a liberal, as evidenced by your actions.
