"My question is; "why are these unscrupulous lenders still in business, advertising on the internet and lending money, AND receiving millions of dollars from our government?""

    I have the same question.

Why our great goverment does not mandate to built houses that will last for ages, like the ones built in another countries, where even great-grand kids live in the same houses that their grand parents lived in, and these houses stand still.
On the other side our great American dream "Own a house" could be taken away by a little wind, insects, water, etc, etc. And when is time to repair the house, people call it remodeling, what a lie. Is call reconstruction, becouse the house is inhabitable.
Then on top of the whole problem we have dishonest people selling this houses at exorbitant prices.
The worst thing is that our goverment agrees with all this people.

there was joke about BUSH, HE COULD SEE SHOES BEING THROWN AT HIM BUT COULD NOT SEE OUR MONEY GOING DOWN THE TUBES. THE BANKS GET THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, THEY GET MONEY FROM US, TAX PAYERS WILL HAVE TO REPAY THE MONEY OUR GOV'T GIVE TO THEM AND THE AUTO MAKERS ALSO, THEN THEY REPOSSE ALL OF IT AND LIVE HAPPY EVERY AFTER. Great article! I could never understand why the goverment doesn't bail the American people out with our own tax money. I guess I just don't know enough.

Unscrupulous lenders? Why are the corrupt politicians who strongarmed the lenders into giving loans to those who could not repay them still in office? I name specifically Chris Dodd (D - CT), Hillary Clinton (D - NY), and Barack Obama (D - IL) as the top three recipients of campaign cash from Freddy and Fanny. What MORONS keep electing these crooks?

I’ve been hearing endless blather from TV “economic” and “business” commentators “recapping” the “unfolding of the economic meltdown”. And it AMAZES me to hear these wonderfully “knowledgeable”, ostensibly erudite whiz-bangs focus on and ascribe blame to various disjointed “pieces of the elephant”. I wonder how long it is going to take for (and indeed, whether it ever really will come to pass that) these people will get BEYOND mere myopia!

The REAL problem is NOT the mortgages, or even the mortgage holders. It is MUCH broader than anything nearly so SIMPLISTIC as just THAT! The fact is that this entire society has LONG been COLLECTIVELY FAILING TO INNOVATE so as to generate NEW REAL WEALTH that is actually joined in by and shared with many of those who OCCUPY all those homes that have been built/rebuilt (by the honest, hardworking folks who did all of that INTRINSICALLY WORTHWHILE work!). But there is not enough GENUINELY PRODUCTIVE work for many OTHERS to do, PERIOD --- AND IT SIMPLY IS NOT POSSIBLE TO INDEFINITELY SUBSTITUTE MAKE-BELIEVE FOR REALITY!

“We” DO NOT need an army of folks running around flipping each others' burgers, polishing each others' boots, and computing each others' income taxes! A LIMITED number of not-TOO-overly-high-priced CEOs, Thespians, professional athletes, "financial advisors", and "political pooh-bahs" of differing stripes is UNAVOIDABLE --- but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY! And “we” ESPECIALLY do NOT need a huge, VERY expensive army of MERCENARIES wittingly or unwittingly subverting this nation into cultivating an “empire” that would forcibly “expropriate” resources and energies of OTHER people and try to subject other cultures to do “our” bidding!

This ENTIRE NATION needs to get off its collective BUTT and get SERIOUSLY busy doing things that are REALLY useful. We ESPECIALLY need to WEAN "OUR"SELVES OFF OF "OUR" ADDICTIVE DEPENDENCY ON OTHER PEOPLES' OIL!! That means, in particular, COMPLETELY RECONSTITUTING “OUR” ENERGY DIET --- through such initiatives as REBUILDING “OUR” VEHICULAR FLEETS TO RUN ON ELECTRICAL POWER AND/OR NATURAL GAS (which “we” possess in ample supply). QUIT SQUANDERING BAZILIONS “SUBJUGATING” IRAQIS AND OTHERS AND GET TO WORK DOING THINGS THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE USEFUL! Get GENUINELY busy on all of THAT, and there will be PLENTY of work for EVERYBODY for about the next CENTURY!!

the same morons keep electing the guys passing out the money through political strongarming are complaining. If banks had to make 10% of their loans to people who didn't qualify to help with the "American Dream" and Fanny Freddie bought up that paper, then why did the politicos kill off Fanny Freddie? So they could create a depression for those same idiots to step up the the bar to get more freebies. who got the benefit of cheap money and loosey goosey rules? people who sholdn't have that mortgage in the first place. And why aren't there a massive number of personal bankruptcies with those foreclosures? Since when do you get out of a promise to pay for something if the market value softens? If you buy a new car and drive it off the lot, most times you owe more than it is worth for a few years. Same happened with houses. If you don't pay for the car, they repossess and push you into bankruptcy, but not with the house, so what happens? the same people go out and get another house with the price crammed down and walk away from the promise to pay. this is nuts!

and obiwan you are correct! why would a government sponsored company donate money too politicians to goose up theri campagin funds? how can this be legal? we subsidise they give away the money to those that vote on their subsidy! I thought money passed to insiders in bankruptcy was subject to recall for at least a year, so why don't we ask those crooks to pay it back?

WHY DONT EVERYBODY WHO WORKS, NOT PAY TAXES AT ALL, NOT PAY ANY OF OUR CREDIT CARDS AT ALL, AND SEND LETTERS TO THE IRS AND ALL THE BANKS SAYING THAT OUR DEBT IS PAID IN FULL AND THAT WE WANT TO SEE FULL ACCOUNTING FOR EVERY SINGLE FREAKING CENT THEY GOT FROM THE TRILLION DOLLAR SCAM-OUT.

I think that there might be a bit more to it all, when you think that many of these mortgagees are in outer urban areas, most of which have zero public transport or inner urban facilities (shopping, sport, entertainment) so Everything is petrol based and if you want to think back to other things over the last 12/18 month when oil was one fifty bbl ? definiitely eats into your capacity to pay off a mortgage when you'd been calculated at 25 bbl and just how long can your administration afford to pay 2 point one BILLION per week for a bit of middle eastern sand worth half that? dodgy business, and now the innocents are up to their neck in it. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of homeless 'vets who wouldnt mind a roof over their heads. The worlds most powerful country cant house itself, or look after its war refuse, and its administration cant do basic arithmetic and, when you think of H.Katrina, they couldnt organise a ****up in a brewery (BTW, Cuba which suffered even worse from Katrina, but only about 2 dozen died, think about it), perhaps there might be side effects in almost every state in the union being dependent, to a greater or lesser degree, upon military expenditure, to make its budget, so all of you, in varying degrees, are part of a war economy, your democracy is dependent upon it, but with all this money sloshing around over the past few years, where is it? perhaps in the largest debt the world has ever seen? its not just the mortgagees that are in a bit of strife, so are your unborn.
Dont worry chaps, God will provide, after all he is an American.
