Comments for Green Bible Stirs Evangelical Concerns »

Although some Christians have long embraced conservation and appreciation for planet Earth ... others ... particularly Evangelicals ... have historically shied away, viewing the issue as a _Liberal_ cause rooted in Politics.

FTA ... "In every book of the Bible, there are references to the world and how we should take care of it," said Rusty Pritchard, ... "When you look at it through that lens, it really jumps out at you ... that God is calling us to care for the world around us."

But look at who is most opposed to the science of 'Global Warming'.

Look at who fights against 'Environmentalism'.

The core group is always the same ... those calling themselves 'Christian Conservatives'.

I'm more and more convinced that these people are not really Christians.

They simply use the Bible to find was to bolster their bigotry and hatred.

For instance, there are precious few references to Homosexuality ... and the Christian Evangelicals use this to promote hatred towards this group ... estimated at 10% of our nation.

They use it to promote eliminating Abortion. But Jesus does not mention abortion.

However, throughout the Bible, there are numerous references to protecting our Earth ... Christian Conservatives show no interest.

There are numerous references to polygamy ... Christian Conservatives discount that.

What could be more sick and pathetic than to use The BIBLE ... to promote hatred.

And yet, that is what the Modern Evangelical Christian Conservative does. Just look at any of Endoscopy's comments ... the 'self-described Christian'.

I hope you don't mind but I clicked through from your advertisement on the Panetta thread. I read the story and saw this:

"• A 2006 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that 70 percent of evangelicals believe there is solid evidence that the Earth is getting warmer."

Doesn't this statistic indicate that you might be painting Christian Conservatives with too broad a brush?

I think it has more to do with whatever ultimately constitutes a personality and a human being than evangelism. Some people believe whatever their parents and minister/rabbi/imam/elder tell them and others are more likely to think for themselves--and it's on a continuum, with peer pressure and appearances having a significant role (human nature).

I saw a figure that about 24-27% of Americans consistently believe their folktales trump science. That's good news for the solar system and its inhabitants.

Ten dollars, howver, says that (contrary to all the scientific evidence) almost all of that 70 percent believes it to be a part of the natural cycle rather than anthropogenic.

You would have to define your "almost all" qualifier for me to take that bet. I'll bet it's considerably less (my qualifier) than you think. Want to bet on that?

Now, here's a safe bet. The guy who wrote this article that was on The Huffington Post, is not a Christian Conservative. I'll offer you 10 to 1 odds and I'd like to make the wager for $1,000. Are you game, Dionys? Here's the article:

            http://www.huffingtonpost.com/harold-ambler/mr-gor...

You see, Dionys, it's evident that this should not be a political issue. There are many Democrats and Independents that don't believe in man-made global warming just as there are many Republicans that do believe in it.

I do many things to limit the carbon output that my activities produce. I try to be a responsible dweller on planet earth. But I would like to see less politicization of this issue. That, in my opinion, is the main problem that "almost all" of my fellow Republicans have with the issue.

              Sure.

My almost all equals 87.5% or better of all peer-reviewed science published in peer-reviewed science journals.

"I do many things to limit the carbon output that my activities produce. I try to be a responsible dweller on planet earth. But I would like to see less politicization of this issue."

That's great. I agree in that there should be less politicization of the issues of global warming, carbon emissions, pollution, et cetera. As long as something actually gets done other than giving corporations a free pass.

You're switching your references, now. Your "almost all" originally was in reference to how many of the 70% believed natural versus man-made causes.

Your new "almost all" references 87.5% of scientists of peer reviewed science journals.

How can one make a bet with you if you keep changing the parameters of the bet?

I'm glad that you agree there should be less politicization of this issue. I am willing to support holding corporations accountable as long as that goofy carbon offset idea isn't used. It's a politically silly tactic.

Its unfortunate that religion lends itself to any and all abusers. By cherrypicking the Bible I can call down comdemnation on anyone or claim the same people to be blessed. As a business religion is a success; as a spiritual guide is must be found wanting. May HE/She/It/They help us!!!! Amen.

I don't believe in HE/She/It/They, and I think we have to handle it on our own without supernatural intervention. I also think that Osteen, Warren, and others have at least started people thinking about biblical interpretation and application, even if I still disagree with their beliefs and philosophy. If it makes people better environmental stewards, then I think it's a Good Thing to some extent.

pc25 - you seem to have a pathological attraction to Al Gore - having him doing BBQs at your home & inscribing the cover of your holy book with his image
What does that have to do with the posted article other than to declare that your infatuation with Al clouds over all other matters.
Do you go about whistling "My Gal Al?"

Evangelicals, the ones who voted for Caribu Barbie, are just a subsidary of the Faux News/Drug Limpbaugh tabloid hate mongering media cartel, and are told what to do and think by their masters, the spokesmen for the rich, the neocon zionist mogals who own 100% of all american media.

Please tell us, Oh master Roger Ailes, director of Faux Noise, puppet of the Almighty demi-god Murdock, what should we think today? Give us direction, your will is ours, tell us this day how we can help you screw the country out of some more billions, while we worship the status quo jesus.

Let us pray.....baby jew jesus, help us in our quest to do the bidding of our masters, the almighty Roger Ailes and the AIPAC, the neocon mogals, send us on our mission to protect the holy land of the holy peole who posess gods chosen strand of inbred DNA, and to kill the enemies of Israel, so that baby jew jesus can gather us up in the rapture, the end of times. Holy jewish mother of god, telepathically communicate to us this day, let our walmart charge card still work.

There HAS been a swing, finally. On the early propeller pages it is Fundamentalists who most viciously deny even climate, change, then global warming, and still now humans' part in it.

These folks were evil mean! Ouch!

But reality catches up, and the same way most of them now (in their hearts) allow blacks and whites to marry, for instance, they are aknowledging the evironmental realities.

Greedy super-wealthy corporate creeps on FoxNews also say they will INCREASE global warming because they can personally profit from world wide disater (will we have to KILL them?) and many Libertarians who don't believe in helping or sharing with anyone also are deniers.

I just wish we could have had the last twenty years (that it has been quite known) to work on the problem instead of Exxon paying crackpot scientists tens of millions to deny the existance of global warming (they publicly admitted it) and Fundamentalist Christians who infiltrated NASA, actively BLOCKING VITAL INFORMATION from scientists to the public because of some crazy religious bias.

When you're focused on pie in the sky with Jeebus, it's easy to discount the importance of the earth and nature. The mindset is typically as Hepburn told Bogart - "Nature is what we were put here to rise above."

Earth-centered religions are more suited to convey earth-friendly and life-friendly values.

Regardless of whether or not global warming is man made or natural or a combination of the two we need to do what we can to ameliorate the problem. I find it difficult to believe that six billion people would not make a difference in the global climate and I have even more trouble believing that some supernatural power will help alleviate it.

Sometimes the only thing an evangelical understands is highlighting passages out of the Bible to teach them that wasting and consuming earth's resources are not what their creator envisioned for stewardship of the bounty called Earth. I applaud any effort to instill conservation and the intelligent use of our natural resources.

"But look at who is most opposed to the science of 'Global Warming'."

This is the sort of sentence used by propagandists to attack "the other side". Few people believe the earth is not warming (though it has been cooling for a few years now, don't hear much about that with all the need for facts...). The debate is if it is caused by mankind. You are factually wrong, but you post and many believe your statement. Please try to be more precise/accurate.

Might get onto propeller, who knows.

True, the temps are lower due to (something, el nino, la nina, something else?) and it is part of an expected climate cycle... Sound familiar?

My point, though, is that man-made global warming is still in the cult/religion phase. Don't tell your followers anything that contradicts your position since they might lose faith. Keep these items only for the "clergy". And your response suggests you haven't heard this before? It does not affect my opinion of MMGW, but getting full facts is impossible it seems.

Careful analysis indeed. Gore puts together a computer generated slide show using a fake glacier, a crumbling glacier in Argentine that has been a tourist attraction for 50 plus years, a floating bear that National Geographic came up with sometime, etc. and proceeds to solve the problem by selling "carbon credits".

Psycho is the child constantly throwing tantrums about stuff he knows nothing about.

Somebody's' been blowing second hand smoke up your a$$ and it has clouded your brain.

It's not just Al Gore. It's NASA and NOAA and thousands of respected climatologists around the world.

We have real problems with physical trash, electronic trash and overfishing, but there's no money in solving those problems.

Instead lets fly off to Bali to play golf, get a tan and talk about the CO2 problem ...

                        You're a bore Mr. Gore ...
