Why not? He named a Clinton crony with no foreign-policy experience to be Secretary of State, didn’t he?
Ace wonders if this is about having a dependable yes man at the top. Not really. It’s about having a guy at the top who’s untainted by “torture.” So untainted, in fact, that he’s also untainted by any intel experience whatsoever.-

GW appointed Porter Goss ... he had covert experience ... and he wrecked the CIA.
His 'wrecking ball' style of management didn't go down well. Plus, he famously attempted to POLITICIZE the CIA ... you know what that means ... PERVERTED INTELLIGENCE for IDEOLOGICAL purpose.
But then ... that's the essence of the Modern Republican Party ... Toe the Ideological LIne ... or ... you're gone.
So ... why did Porter Goss leave his position? Did he tire of Politicizing the CIA at the behest of the Neo-Cons?
It's possible.
People of Conscience eventually tire of being requested to put America SECOND .. ahead of the crazy Neo-Conservative Ideology.
I mean, Neo-Cons have caused so much damage to our nation.
But some suspect that Porter Goss has left due to an INFLUENCE PEDDLING scheme ... tied to Randall 'Duke' Cunningham.
http://jeffweintraub.blogspot.com/2006/05/why-was-...
Heres a bit from the article.
"The agency also has been drawn into a federal investigation of bribery that has sent former Rep. Randall "Duke" Cunningham to prison. Just this past week, the CIA confirmed that its third-ranking official, a hand-picked appointee of Mr. Goss, had attended poker games at a hospitality suite set up by a defense contractor implicated in the bribing of former Rep. Cunningham. Friday, people with knowledge of the continuing Cunningham inquiry said the CIA official, Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, is under federal criminal investigation in connection with awarding agency contracts."

Also from the article.

"When Mr. Goss took over the CIA in September 2004, officials said they hoped he would bring rigor to an agency that had suffered tremendous morale problems in the wake of intelligence failures before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the run-up to the Iraq war. But instead, problems at the agency seemed to multiply, as insiders criticized the rigid management style of the former CIA agent and Florida Republican congressman. Mr. Goss was thought to have hastened the brain drain at the agency by reassigning much of its upper echelon when taking over, installing a new crop of managers."
See, that's why I'm appreciative of Obama picking Leon Pannetta.
He's not likely to harm our Intelligence gathering efforts by alienating professionals by politicizing their work.
After all, TRUTH is what it is ... there's no politicizing to be done.
Well ... I USED to think that ... until Mr. Bush went to Washington.
And ... of course ... after I became aware of pc25's propensity to politicize truth.
.
But hey, it's not intended as an insult pc25.
Ideological Politicization is what the Modern Republican does. It's just life in this era.
Until we can all agree that Neo-Conservatism is an anti-traditional values ideology ... destined for the Ash Heap of History.

and not from the article ........just another one of those old, recycled, regurgitated, washington insider political elites ( and this one with no experience in INTEL and a history of tensions and dissensions between himself and intelligence professionals no less) that he railed about during the campaign. Do you honestly believe that intelligence professionals, especially foreign station officers with front line intelligence experience will take this BOZO seriously. Highly doubtful, I don't think he will make it through confirmation.

Klarissa ... the point is this ... for 8 years, I have watched as George W. Bush has let his ideology ruin agency after agency.
Reply
The hard-fast belief in their "NO GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT" has led to failure after failure.
For instance, many in the CIA tried to keep the Bush administration from linking Iraq to Al Qaida ... and paid the price.
This was a perversion of our Intelligence ... and a compromise to our national security.
But every Right Wing member of Propeller has supported every George W. Bush appointee without fail.
So ... for eight years ... you have accepted and supported what Porter Goss has done to the CIA ... all evidence pointing to disgraceful behavior.
And now ... at the mention of Leon Panetta's name as CIA director - you immediately presume, assume, conjecture, and imagine every horror ...
Don't you see?
You have no credibility to criticize Leon Panetta.
You .... have .... no .... credibility ....
THAT's why I bring up Porter Goss.
Your 8 years of undying support PROVES ....
You .... have .... no .... credibility .... to criticize Leon Panetta.
If one of you accepts the fact that George W. Bush approved the politicization of the CIA under Porter Goss .... then YES ... I would accept that you are rational observers of the political landscape.
But you don't ... so you aren't.

Klarissa, ... it should be apparent to you by now that .... our 'enemy' is the Neo-Conservative Ideology.
Reply
This ideology has wrecked our nation .... damaged our nation ... at least as much as Al Qaeda.
True, Al Qaeda attacked New York and the Pentagon ... killing thousands.
But this Neo-Conservative ideological nut cases ... GW, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz ... they have been responsible for lying to our nation to arbitrarily engage in 'Nation Building".
This has cost our nation over 4,000 dead American soldiers and untold thousands upon thousands of dead Iraqis.
This lie pursuant to ideological purity has also cost our nation close to $800 BILLION dollars.
Their fantastical incompetence for refusing to do their job of regulation and oversight has resulted in astonishingly horrible economic meltdowns.
I mean ... all they had to do is regulate ... but they refused ... believing that ... "Government should """Get Out of the Way of Business"""". LOL!!!
The Neo-Cons truly are the most dangerous threat to national security. Patriotic Americans realize that ...
And THAT is why Obama defeated McCain ...
Because America is tired of Neo-Conservatives and Modern Republicans putting their Crazy Ideology above the interests and safety of America.

As I reflect on 2008, I can say we had a great year:
1. Blacks are happy; Obama was elected.
2. Whites are happy, OJ is in jail.
3. Democrats are happy; George Bush is leaving office.
4. Republicans are happy: Democrats will finally quit saying George Bush stole the election.
5. And all of us are happy; The election is finally over!
2009 should be even better:
Immediately after his inauguration,
Obama will start from DAY ONE to:
balance the budget,
revive the economy,
solve the real estate problem,
solve the auto industry problem,
solve our gas/alternative energy problem,
stop the fires and mudslides in California,
ban hurricanes and tornadoes,
stop identity theft,
reverse global warming,
find Osama,
solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
get rid of corruption in government
and achieve world peace.
Then on the 7th day, He will rest.
Best wishes for 2009!-

But ... I'll pick up on your divergent comment .... For I know a few Liberals ... and this is THEIR version of what the Right anticipated for GW's innauguration.
------------------------------
In the Liberal version, TWO players inhabit the passion play ... Rush Limbaugh ... who serves as a sort of John the Baptist figure ... and George W. Bush .... the Messiah of the Christian Conservatives ... a true ... Born Again President ... or so he says.
First Rush Limbaugh paved the way for the George The Messiah ... preaching the partisan hatred necessary to turn Americans away from Truth and Justice ... and a sense of Moral Propriety.
Once Americans diminished their Moral Center ... the way was open for the Messiah Bush ....
Bush The Messiah promised to bring Christian Morals to the White House.
The world would finally see America as a shining light upon a hill ... and if they didn't ... then GW would use his holy power to invade evil nations.
As Messiah, GW was going to end all abortions ... all over the world!
The Messiah was going to fix the Tax Code so that the Wealthy would pay NO taxes ... (after all ... we should all be thankful that the wealthy live in our nation ... because ... the very fact they are rich proves that God has blessed them.
The Messiah Bush was going to Cut Spending .... Reduce the Size of Government ... and what Government remained was going to be highly efficient.
Of course, now that the Messiah has been proven to be False ... and Rush Limbaugh has been proven to be a Liar .... people in the know are discussing ways to RE-FORMULATE the Republican Party.
You know ... REBRAND the GOP?

It isn't like the director must be an uber-spy.
It's a Government Bureaucracy. All you have do be is a good manager. And a lot of that means just letting people do the best they can .... which .... unfortunately .... Porter Goss did not do ....

Hey Goppy
Reply
apparently the One's appointment of Panetta is starting not to sit too well with Dems
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/01/05/...
From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
NBC News has learned that Senate Democrats -- including Dianne Feinstein and Jay Rockefeller, who are the incoming and outgoing Intelligence chairmen -- have privately recommended a career CIA officer to head the agency.
Democratic sources indicate that both have recommended deputy CIA Director Steve Kappes, a veteran CIA intelligence officer who is widely credited with getting the Libyans to give up their nuclear program. Kappes also was former Moscow station chief.
The senators have let the transition team know they believe that the agency has finally settled down under Michael Hayden and needs a real intelligence pro to make key decisions -- and get institutional support to make them stick.
One potential downside for Kappes: Like former counter-terror chief John Brennan, some critics says he had line authority over controversial decisions involving interrogation and detention. Brennan was taken out of contention for the CIA job after criticism on the Web on that issue, even though he says he privately objected to the policies and was not in the chain of command at the time.
this guy will not pass confirmation

Reply
The believer in me says that Mr. Panetta is a good manager and and an experienced leader in a bi-partisan atmosphere. This part hopes that this is an affirmation of Obama's posit that words really do mean something. Mr. Obama is on record as saying that he wants a torture free agency. Mr. Panetta is on record as saying torture is illegal, immoral, dangerous and counterproductive. He also said in relation to solving national problems, that it "will only happen when the leadership of the nation, both Republicans and Democrats, decide that governing is more important than winning." This same believer in me must then say that I hope Mr. Panetta tells Mr. Obama what he needs to hear and not what he wants to hear.-

The first order of bussiness should be the immediate investigation into "illegal domestic surviellance" prior to the events of 9/11.

History will prove the adults who have been in office for the past eight years have kept this country safe. The thought of Obama as president with morons Pelosi and Reid heading the congress, and now Panetta as head of the CIA, is laughable if it was not so terrifying. Thank God for strong and intelligent men like George Bush & Dick Cheney. They kept the country safe and they kept our economy strong until the democrats took over control of the congress two years ago. Their misguided policies and corrupt mismanagement of Fannie/Freddiewere the biggest contributors to the collapse of wall street.Democrat policies traced all the way back to Jimmy Carter, then Bill Clinton, and idiots like Dodd and Frank caused all of this. Giving freedom to the people of Iraq was a worthy cause. Containing Iran by building up Iraq and soon Afghanistan is a worthy cause. I agree with you when you mention debts. We need to take that seriously. Government is a huge part of the problem. I think it's time to stop the subsidies for anyone here illegally. You need health care, you better have cash. If not, your home country will be back charged on their foreign aid. I think it's time for people to stop having kids to increase their welfare payments. You have kids, you get a job and pay for them. If you can't handle that then you need to take steps not to have kids. I think we need reforms in our schools. While I'd like everyone to go to college, not everyone wants to. We still need machinists, tool & die, road builders and even ditch diggers. It's time for our public schools to get back to the basics. Reading, math and ENGLISH. Texting and foreign languages won't help you in a bread line. We need real skills.
