President-elect Barack Obama has selected Leon E. Panetta, the former congressman and White House chief of staff, to take over the Central Intelligence Agency, an organization that Mr. Obama criticized during the campaign for using interrogation methods he decried as torture, Democratic officials said Monday.

a good analysis of this pick here

    http://hotair.com/archives/2009/01/05/obama-names-...

Why not? He named a Clinton crony with no foreign-policy experience to be Secretary of State, didn’t he?

Ace wonders if this is about having a dependable yes man at the top. Not really. It’s about having a guy at the top who’s untainted by “torture.” So untainted, in fact, that he’s also untainted by any intel experience whatsoever.

    Also from the article.

"When Mr. Goss took over the CIA in September 2004, officials said they hoped he would bring rigor to an agency that had suffered tremendous morale problems in the wake of intelligence failures before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the run-up to the Iraq war. But instead, problems at the agency seemed to multiply, as insiders criticized the rigid management style of the former CIA agent and Florida Republican congressman. Mr. Goss was thought to have hastened the brain drain at the agency by reassigning much of its upper echelon when taking over, installing a new crop of managers."

See, that's why I'm appreciative of Obama picking Leon Pannetta.

He's not likely to harm our Intelligence gathering efforts by alienating professionals by politicizing their work.

After all, TRUTH is what it is ... there's no politicizing to be done.

Well ... I USED to think that ... until Mr. Bush went to Washington.

And ... of course ... after I became aware of pc25's propensity to politicize truth.
    .

But hey, it's not intended as an insult pc25.

Ideological Politicization is what the Modern Republican does. It's just life in this era.

Until we can all agree that Neo-Conservatism is an anti-traditional values ideology ... destined for the Ash Heap of History.
    .

    A friend sent me this:
As I reflect on 2008, I can say we had a great year:
    1. Blacks are happy; Obama was elected.
    2. Whites are happy, OJ is in jail.
    3. Democrats are happy; George Bush is leaving office.
    4. Republicans are happy: Democrats will finally quit saying George Bush stole the election.
    5. And all of us are happy; The election is finally over!
    2009 should be even better:

    Immediately after his inauguration,

Obama will start from DAY ONE to:
    balance the budget,
    revive the economy,
    solve the real estate problem,
    solve the auto industry problem,
    solve our gas/alternative energy problem,
stop the fires and mudslides in California,
    ban hurricanes and tornadoes,
    stop identity theft,
    reverse global warming,
    find Osama,
    solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
get rid of corruption in government
    and achieve world peace.

Then on the 7th day, He will rest.
    Best wishes for 2009!

I've always liked Panetta BUT certainly not as CIA director

How can Obama appoint someone with no intelligence experience to head the CIA - what a disaster!!

Combine the Panetta choice with Napolitano as head of Homeland Security and you know what trouble we are in!
It was only a month ago there was an article about the Phonenix police willing to buy their own automatic weapons - they were outgunned by the Mexican drug gangs
Napolitano can't even keep the state of AZ safe let alone the nation!

      What a fiasco!

Doubtful ... Look at it this way ....

      Panetta is a LIBERAL ...

Now ... I'm a Centrist ... but from what I gather ... LIBERALS actually believe in making Government WORK.

      The Modern Republican HATES Government.

Haven't you been listening to your own Messiah's Messages?

George W. Bush wanted to keep Government OUT of the way!

      Get it?

The Modern Republican HATES the U. S. Government.

That's what the Modern Republican CAMPAIGNS ON.

Geesh, Mutainia! Are you really that ignorant of what Modern Republicans are SAYING?

Don't you remember the CHEERS that Sarah Palin got when she said she 'wanted to go to Washington to make sure Government STAY'S OUT OF THE WAY!'

That's why Modern Republicans send our troops into battle without effective equipment.

That's why Modern Republicans ignore warnings of economic collapse.

Their Slavish Allegiance to their Ideology says ... "What? Why should WE care? We are just Government ... and we HATE Government ... let it all go to hell ... good riddance!

See, The Modern Republican doesn't really care much for America ... just their Ideology ... an Ideology that you need a PhD in Pretzel Logic to understand.

By the way ... didn't you fight AGAINST America in Afghanistan, Mutania?

Someone told me that you fought in Afghanistan ... a kind of John Walker Lindh situation?

I can understand that ... After all, Americas Christian Conservatives are trying to create a kind of Taliban Inspired Sharia Law nation.

Except that it would be The Christian Evangelical, Born Again Nation ... with Dr. Rick Warren as first President.

180 Million members .... and growing!
      .

The cynic in me says that Mr. Panetta is a bad choice because of his lack of experience in this field. But then that same cynic must ask what has an experience laden CIA really done for us?

The believer in me says that Mr. Panetta is a good manager and and an experienced leader in a bi-partisan atmosphere. This part hopes that this is an affirmation of Obama's posit that words really do mean something. Mr. Obama is on record as saying that he wants a torture free agency. Mr. Panetta is on record as saying torture is illegal, immoral, dangerous and counterproductive. He also said in relation to solving national problems, that it "will only happen when the leadership of the nation, both Republicans and Democrats, decide that governing is more important than winning." This same believer in me must then say that I hope Mr. Panetta tells Mr. Obama what he needs to hear and not what he wants to hear.

Are you getting a "Purpose Driven Life" mixed up with a "Liberal Driven Life"?

I realize that both necessitate that one have ideals.

Have you read the "My Cynical View of America ... (a guide to politics in America)" ... it's standard reading for my fellow Christian Conservatives.

The lame MSM still is ignoring the fact that "Betty" Soetoro/AKA Barry Obama has an appointment witht the US Supreme Court this Friday, Jan 9 over the itty bitty question of his constitutional eligibility to be the president of USA. Now, if this flim flam carnival barker wants to be the president of his country, that is, Indonesia, he will have to wait to be released from federal prison because that is where he is headed.

Obama, Soetoro or whomever this sociopathic charlatan really is, is the issue, not whether he appoints one clown or another since he isn't going to be anything other than a federal inmate.

What" Penatta doesn't have any INTEL experience? I am shocked, shocked and shocked some more. EXPERIENCE? Soetoro/AKA Obama doesn't have experience running a Kool-Aid stand, let alone being constitutiionally qualified to be president of the USA. Indonesia, fine, but not the USA.

We shall see after this Friday, Jan. 9 when the US Supreme Court meets over Barry's ineligibility to be president. After all he claims, but refuses to prove he was born in Hawaii, and of course there is that itty bitty problem of being a naturalized Indonesian and an illegal alien in this country.

So we shall see if this charlatan and piece of human excrement from the Chicago sewers gets to appoint any incompetent for anything very soon, won't we?

The children who have inhabited the halls of power these last 8 years, - have finger-painted in blood and debt across the pages of American history.
They will not be well-remembered; nor will their supporters.

            War is not a game for chicken-hawks and global industrialists;
national unity is as valuable a resource as coal or iron.
Charging 8 years of lunacy to the national debt, was theft.

We are all less safe, and poorer, because of those who are even now clearing out their desks.
            .
Let them wander away and trouble our country no more.

History will prove the adults who have been in office for the past eight years have kept this country safe. The thought of Obama as president with morons Pelosi and Reid heading the congress, and now Panetta as head of the CIA, is laughable if it was not so terrifying. Thank God for strong and intelligent men like George Bush & Dick Cheney. They kept the country safe and they kept our economy strong until the democrats took over control of the congress two years ago. Their misguided policies and corrupt mismanagement of Fannie/Freddiewere the biggest contributors to the collapse of wall street.Democrat policies traced all the way back to Jimmy Carter, then Bill Clinton, and idiots like Dodd and Frank caused all of this. Barack Obama actually filed a law suit on behalf of ACORN ( another group of real intelligent people) against citibank to force them to make subprime loans. It is and always has been democrat policies that ruin the economy and ruin our country.
Obama won this election because the press made him out to be the Messiah and most of the people in this country who voted for him are so uninformed that it is comical.Every Obama supporter interviewed by various polls including liberal Howard Stern, could not even identify Biden from a picture !
This country has seen it`s better days and the next four years will be a rough ride.....unless the Messiah realizes that everything he promised, will do nothing to improve the economy or make us safer. God help us !

When you have an inexperienced person as President you will get stupid decisions made by him due to him not knowing how to be a Senator, let alone a President.
So far all he has done was to appoint all of Bill Clinton's clan.
It sounds like he has no Ideas of his own.
You should have picked Hillary for Prez.
At least she knows what she is doing.
