Panetta, the former congressman and White House chief of staff, to take over the Central Intelligence Agency, an organization that Mr. Obama criticized during the campaign for using interrogation methods he decried as torture, Democratic officials said Monday.

GW appointed Porter Goss ... he had covert experience ... and he wrecked the CIA.
His 'wrecking ball' style of management didn't go down well. Plus, he famously attempted to POLITICIZE the CIA ... you know what that means ... PERVERTED INTELLIGENCE for IDEOLOGICAL purpose.
But then ... that's the essence of the Modern Republican Party ... Toe the Ideological LIne ... or ... you're gone.

For instance, many in the CIA tried to keep the Bush administration from linking Iraq to Al Qaida ... and paid the price.
This was a perversion of our Intelligence ... and a compromise to our national security.

How can Obama appoint someone with no intelligence experience to head the CIA - what a disaster!!
Combine the Panetta choice with Napolitano as head of Homeland Security and you know what trouble we are in!
It was only a month ago there was an article about the Phonenix police willing to buy their own automatic weapons - they were outgunned by the Mexican drug gangs
Napolitano can't even keep the state of AZ safe let alone the nation!

I mean ... what good did Porter Goss' experience provide?
The answer is NONE .... in fact .... Porter Goss caused GREAT harm to our national security by alienating many, many in the CIA leadership.
It isn't like the director must be an uber-spy.
It's a Government Bureaucracy. All you have do be is a good manager. And a lot of that means just letting people do the best they can .... which .... unfortunately .... Porter Goss did not do ....

NBC News has learned that Senate Democrats -- including Dianne Feinstein and Jay Rockefeller, who are the incoming and outgoing Intelligence chairmen -- have privately recommended a career CIA officer to head the agency.
Democratic sources indicate that both have recommended deputy CIA Director Steve Kappes, a veteran CIA intelligence officer who is widely credited with getting the Libyans to give up their nuclear program. Kappes also was former Moscow station chief.
The senators have let the transition team know they believe that the agency has finally settled down under Michael Hayden and needs a real intelligence pro to make key decisions -- and get institutional support to make them stick.
One potential downside for Kappes: Like former counter-terror chief John Brennan, some critics says he had line authority over controversial decisions involving interrogation and detention. Brennan was taken out of contention for the CIA job after criticism on the Web on that issue, even though he says he privately objected to the policies and was not in the chain of command at the time.

The cynic in me says that Mr. Panetta is a bad choice because of his lack of experience in this field. But then that same cynic must ask what has an experience laden CIA really done for us?

The believer in me says that Mr. Panetta is a good manager and and an experienced leader in a bi-partisan atmosphere. This part hopes that this is an affirmation of Obama's posit that words really do mean something. Mr. Obama is on record as saying that he wants a torture free agency. Mr. Panetta is on record as saying torture is illegal, immoral, dangerous and counterproductive. He also said in relation to solving national problems, that it "will only happen when the leadership of the nation, both Republicans and Democrats, decide that governing is more important than winning." This same believer in me must then say that I hope Mr. Panetta tells Mr. Obama what he needs to hear and not what he wants to hear.-

We need an outsider. We need to reign in the intelligence services who are violating our laws and making enemies behind the scenes.
The first order of bussiness should be the immediate investigation into "illegal domestic surviellance" prior to the events of 9/11.
Also, they should investigate the relationship between Bin Laden and rogue intelligence operatives prior to 9/11.
There's alot more at stake; the Constitution and individual freedoms.

My bet on what he does is that he continues surveillance, because after he is briefed and finds out what is going on with the terrorists planning activities in the USA he will want even more surveillance.

The thought of Obama as president with morons Pelosi and Reid heading the congress, and now Panetta as head of the CIA, is laughable if it was not so terrifying. They kept the country safe and they kept our economy strong until the democrats took over control of the congress two years ago. Obama won this election because the press made him out to be the Messiah and most of the people in this country who voted for him are so uninformed that it is comical.Every Obama supporter interviewed by various polls including liberal Howard Stern, could not even identify Biden from a picture !
This country has seen it`s better days and the next four years will be a rough ride.....unless the Messiah realizes that everything he promised, will do nothing to improve the economy or make us safer. God help us !-

Giving freedom to the people of Iraq was a worthy cause. Containing Iran by building up Iraq and soon Afghanistan is a worthy cause. I agree with you when you mention debts. We need to take that seriously. Government is a huge part of the problem. I think it's time to stop the subsidies for anyone here illegally. You need health care, you better have cash. If not, your home country will be back charged on their foreign aid. I think it's time for people to stop having kids to increase their welfare payments. You have kids, you get a job and pay for them. If you can't handle that then you need to take steps not to have kids. I think we need reforms in our schools. While I'd like everyone to go to college, not everyone wants to. We still need machinists, tool & die, road builders and even ditch diggers. It's time for our public schools to get back to the basics. Reading, math and ENGLISH. Texting and foreign languages won't help you in a bread line. We need real skills.

This isn't a war against communism, we've lost that one already with you. We're fighting against a terror network that targets all of us.
