There is no doubt this tragic story will be in family members hearts and minds for a very long time. Veronica was a silent victim for so long, like so many other women, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear as my grandma use to say. Still the system does not protect women as it should. The safe guards they have in place or flimsy at best.

It never fails to amaze me how the priorities when it comes to women in this country appear to be someone low.
The law does not take domestic abuse serious enough. Think about how many people hear about a couple having issues or fighting and the reaction is ofen well luke warm.
I have seen many cases where the spouse has a warrant out on him and is in plane view of a lot of people but they never seem to get picked up.
Domestic abuse is a terrorist act. Terror for the poor victim who has to undergo mental and physical anguish every day of their lives, now if that is not terror, then perhaps the word should be redefined in Webster's.
For example most women are terrified when they bring charges against their spouse or boy friend..yet the courts expect them to testify in person, even though their is sufficient evidence showing the woman had been brutalized.
We lock up terrorist every time we come across them and might take years before we show them the evidence. So why can't we lock up the home grown domestic spouse abuser when we have over whelming evidence, without the victim having to worry about him or her getting out and finishing the job.
In Veronica's case her husband should have been locked up and the key throwed away after the first incident when he pistol whipped her..with or without her testimony in court.
She had already given the police her statement. The hospital evidence was there..so why did we require she face him in a courtroom. Why don't we have video conferencing for cases where the woman is afraid of her attacker? -

At the very least it should be an option. Why can't protective orders be exactly as they imply. Protect the victim through the entire process. Mandatory escort to and from the court house.

We put more effort in apprehending someone who has stole something from 7-11. Armed Robbery carries mandatory sentences. If someone knows that when they beat up their spouse they are going to get 7 or 8 years would that not possibly be a deterent?
I have personally seen women call the police, the man is picked up and out of jail before the victim can get home and collect her clothes. No bail if there is sufficent evidence to show you beat the hell out of your spouse.
Wy can't the abuser be tagged and watched if he is out on bail? At least the police will know where he is and what he might be up to.
In Veronica's case the scum bucket was seen going into his house which tells me he was freely moving around without any fear of the police.
I believe since domestic abuse has gone on for centuries there is a certain amount of laissez-faire attitude when it comes to spousal abuse.
If someone walks into city hall and pops an official in the face I can guarantee you they will not be getting out on bail right away and I can also gurantee you every effort will be made to apprehend them.
Sending some officers to aprrehend another man is like sending the fox in the hen house and telling him to keep an eye on those chickens.
I have seen cases were the cops try and talk to a man and say something like okay lets go cool off. Of course after the Simpson trial the system started taking things a bit more serious.
Veronica Williams should be alive today, if we had a system that mandatory sentencing and counseling, immediately upon filing charges women advocates should be stepping in to help out the women who is having one of the worst days of her life and obviously in no frame of mind to think clearly.
If its a man then send in male advocates. The point is have a stong pro victim agenda in place.
Most women are very very afraid and many men just don't get it. Because they are the stronger sex and for the most part do not have to worry about the hell being knocked out of them in their own homes..with the exception of a small percentage who might get way laid with the first lick (grits-frying pan) technique.
Anyway I just feel the system failed her. Her husband should have had a back ground check done before the community propped him up in the role of some violence advocate, safe community crap. Here is a guy advocating for a safe community and his own home is not safe for his wife.
I saw where some comments from the community were..oh we are praying for him and hope he will be back one day. -

Why would anyone short of an absolute idiot and moron want someone back in their community that has just brutally in full view of a court house killed their wife?

Why because its the same attitude that is prevelant in our society. The issue is not addressed in the serious manner it deserves.
If you have problems with putting your hands on someone..go get help..if not you go to jail and it becomes your home for a long time. We are much to lenient on people who practice hurting other people whether its women or children, who are the weaker ones that in a sane society would be protected by the stronger ones.
A man who hits a woman is not a man..he is a pretender.
