Skepticism About Second Amendment Support »
Posted By LibertyKnight 10 months, 2 weeks ago in Health & FitnessAs Texas Representative Ron Paul put it: "As long as there is metalworking and welding capability, it matters not what gun laws are imposed upon law-abiding people. Those that wish to have guns, and disregard the law, will have guns.

"In the United States, in the 40 states that have "right-to-carry" laws, violent crime rates on average are 26 percent lower than the rest of the nation. Yet, Obama has supported federal legislation to supersede the rights of citizens carrying weapons because the laws in those other states are "threatening the safety of Illinois residents." Never mind the truth, such as the fact that the seven states with the lowest violent crime rates are "right-to-carry" states, according to FBI statistics."
This is one truth that is hard to refute, no matter how they spin it.-

I don't think for one minute that it's Obama's intention to attempt to take our right to bear arms.

So you know your own nature and act accordingly. Someone deserves a word of thanks for teaching you that.

I've been in a home with access to guns my entire life, in neighborhoods with others who shared that experience. And I wouldn't consider going after someone I consider an enemy unless my life or someone else's was at stake. And amazingly, I've met a lot of other people just like me. And our founders trusted ordinary citizens to be armed and ready in case enemies foreign or domestic might strike. In fact, they insisted upon it.
And, our rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution are natural rights and "shall not be infringed". -

Man, why are people negging crespi. Understand America is great because of our diversity and that we understand that specialization can be good for people. Crespi is obvioulsy not qualified for a job as an ambassador or UN rep. nor am I. If the job was guarding an area or enforcing a bond I would have Crespi on speed dial.

Only Ellsworth-Tooey (whose avatar states "obey me," suggesting he's a tyrant himself) thinks that a woman who might have saved a room full of innocent people if she'd had a gun should be neg'd.

His entire history has been anti-second amendment, and he was a key figure in the Joyce Foundation, which continues to fund anti-second amendment advocates. He supports our right to fish and hunt in rural areas, but not our right to defend ourselves in cities, where we need it most.

I like Obama, don't get me wrong, but I will fight him tooth and claw on undercutting constitutional rights. ANY constitutional rights.

This 2nd Amendment issue is largely a red herring. There is nothing Obama can do on his own to circumvent the 2nd Amendment, even if he had the desire. It would take an act of Congress, and Congresspeople are well aware this is a hot-button issue for a lot of centrist voters.

From what I've read about Obama, he's very much into localities determining what is appropriate regulation of firearms. A pawn shop that buys and sells guns in an inner city should likely have different regulations and operating requirements than Joe-Bob's Bait-n-Ammo Shop off Oklahoma highway 16.-

Congress has a very vocal minority who have been courted by Bloomberg and the anti-second amendment crowd, and they've been successful before and they see their chance agains. And those who are most vocal have suffered a trauma incident involving a gun themselves. So they seek out ways to spread mass hysteria that isn't rational, but is an emotional salve. You'd be amazed at the number of people who are anti-second amendment because they suffer from PTSD.

And I disagree that city-dwellers should have fewer rights. They need self-protection even more, in some instances. Globalization and the ability of criminals to travel puts more of them in positions to do harm to innocent citizens. If we really listened to our founders, we would be armed and well-trained in gun safety and not even having this conversation about disarming ourselves. -

why .. just because someone lives in the inner city does not in itself make them less law abiding.. and there are a lot of criminals that might just shop at Joe-Bob's Bait-n-Ammo...
Law to be effective .. must be constant... no if's and's or but's.. no differences...

I lived in London for two years back in the Seventies. There was ONE death by a handgun there in that city of eight million+ people in those years. There were very, very few in the whole of Great Britain during that time. During same time in the US in one year there were 11,000 deaths by handguns!

That's misleading. It doesn't compare the figures for the U.K. population vs. the U.S. population (per 100,000 for example). Also, U.S. cops killed bad guys with guns back then, while British cops had no guns, and the U.S. has always had serious gang problems associated with the latest group to immigrate, since we have a long history of periodic mass immigration. And even so, you have to look at all deaths to really get a feel for how they compare. Some even use the term "homicide" quite differently.
Reply
Both the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/wisqars/default.htm) and Bureau of Justice Statistics (http://www.tincher.to/deaths.htm) have reported that approximately 57% of US gun deaths are suicides. Where guns aren't available, people simply use other means. And accidental shootings have fallen in the U.S. since the 1930s.
Note that CCW holders are statistically much less likely to shoot someone criminally compared to the population generally, and 90% of U.S. homicide victims are criminals themselves.
The problem is obviously not the guns. -

I agree with you Bilcorno, the numbers just don't support their side. Guns in this culture are supported because of the image of power they project. Its the cult of macho. From a rational point of view as a form of protection, this just doesn't add up. Most nations where they have strict gun control laws have much lower crime rates than America. If guns were a deterent to crime and yet so pervasive here, why aren't they working? I mean any potential American could have a gun in his home but it doesn't seem to stop other Americans from attacking them.

Even if the police do arrive on the scene in time, they have no duty to protect individuals, according to a Supreme Court ruling.

The police actually responded to a 911 call, and didn't hear anything when they reached the home, so didn't bother to enter and just left women to be raped and killed.

And remember the California woman running around her home talking to 911 while intruders killed her this past summer?

Guns are not what keep us free. It is the rule of law, democracy, and civilian control of the military. The gun in the home as a tool for self defense is questionable as well since most people who die from guns are killed by friends or relatives. They present as much danger to their owners as they do to their perspective enemies. If you like guns, fine, just say so. Don't pretend like they occupy some sacred place in our culture. More often they are the cause of tragedy than celebration. Just get comfortable with this idea and let it go at that. Most European nations and places like Japan have much lower homicide rates than we do and many fewer guns.

All of you gun nuts on here make me sick! There is absolutely no good reason to have a gun other than for hunting. There is absolutely no reason other than to get your little boy testosterone fired up and make you feel like a man. A real man uses his mind, not his fists. You gun nuts are largely to blame for getting the worst president in history appointed....twice! You and the fire and brimstone radical right wing evangelicals.

Haven't you noticed that George Bush campaigned on issues you wanted and failed to deliver ANY of them over his 8 year reign? You are just a bunch of stupid redneck suckers licking up the koolaid doled out by the neocon Republican party. The German citizens fell for it in the 30's and you see where that led. That type of mentality must be gone forever in this country! NEVER again will we buy into your narrow minded bigotry spewed over OUR airwaves. Fox, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly need to disappear from lack of sponsors and support! They are just throwing gasoline on the fire of hatred and bigotry in this country. The are the most despicable and ugly people in this country....after Bush and his minions.
If the Republican party expects to survive, they MUST disavow and disengage themselves from the neocons and nazis that have been so pervasive since Reagan!-

Interesting. The gun used for "hunting" can also be used for a weapon to kill or mame innocent victims of crime as well as put meat in the freezer. There is no in-between or is there?

I heard a heart warming story the other day, a NRA gun patriot conservative came home with his blonde fat wife after shopping at walmart next the their evangelical mega church, when he heard a noise in his closet. He drew his pistol and fired into the closet, only to find his two daughters hiding inside to suprise him. Before bleading to death, and between screams of agony from her massive gut wound though her liver, the daughter managed to whisper "I love you daddy" to the fat coward NRA republican swine.
Reply
Of course, he did the correct thing, and immediately held the gun to his wifes head and killed his hysterical wife, then blasted his own brains out, unable to bear the misery of killing his own child.
And the world is much better off, 4 less meat sacks of coward conservative republican DNA to pollute the earth, turning food into fertilizer.
