We are being fed a real crock about Prince Timothy's tax problem

Timothy Geithner, President-elect Barack Obama’s nominee for Treasury secretary, says he didn’t pay his federal self-employment taxes for four years because he “forgot.” That is no longer a credible explanation in view of today’s reporting by National Review’s Byron York. Geithner accepted reimbursement from the International Monetary Fund specifically to cover federal taxes totaling $42,702 he had not paid, according to Senate confirmation documents examined by York.
This is damning because on the IMF’s Annual Tax Allowance Request, Geithner promised to “pay the taxes for which I have received tax allowance payments...” In truth, he didn’t pay those taxes until it was brought to his attention, first by the IRS in 2006, and now as part of the vetting process for his Treasury nomination.

Geithner received an annual reminder from the IMF that he owed self-employment taxes. He applied for a reimbursement each year from 2001 through 2004, but then pocketed the cash instead of forwarding it to the IRS. Doing so four years in a row is not merely an “honest mistake,” as the Obama transition team maintains. Unless he’s comfortable with a tax scofflaw overseeing the IRS, Obama should withdraw Geithner’s nomination.

    FTA
" Furthermore, from the perspective of liberty, Geithner's villainy is not in the fact that he might have hired an illegal alien so much as it is in the hypocrisy by which he and so many other government officials hold themselves to a standard of law radically different from that to which they hold the rest of us."

    So true.

A good and telling article. Are we facing another 4 years of business as usual? Time will tell but don't bet against it. Being a Self-Employed person, I can say with certainty that if I even make an honest mistake ( such as under estimating the quarterly payments, I have to pay the penalty - I did last year).
And here this creep gets away with not paying for four years. Bet I'd be in the jailhouse for the same behavior.

Want to really compare the rich and famous with us ordinaries?
Let's see Madoff stole $50 Billion but gets to stay in his $7 Million Apartment probably for years if he is ever brought to trial. A couple names their kid Hitler and the Social Services people take their child from them for the dumb but perfectly legal act.

    Nuff said.

        Another tidbit about Hypocrisy.

Clinton Spent 34 million Dollars on his Inauguration.

        Bush spent 35 million.

Obama will spend 150 mmmmmmillion dollars! Change we can believe in?

I thought all of the appointees were given a thorough vetting and had to fill out extensive questionares in order to be even considered. Who do you think is doing the vetting? Emmanuel, Jarret, who?

Hillary's confirmation was a lovefest, but then like she said in the primary, all her dirty laundry has been dug through before.

For me, hypocracy seems to be part of the political business. Doing exactly the opposite of what one demands of the rest is quite a common phenomenon. When it comes to tax paying, you need some special knowledge or good (and expensive)advisers not to have to pay. A normal citizen will perhaps (intendedly or unintendely)sometimes pay less than he would have had to, but he will soon be punished, because the more you have, the more legal possibilities are there to get your taxes back into your purse, often even more than you have payed before!

$150 million. As Americans are losing their homes their jobs and have NO idea if we will fall into a total drepression. NO this is NO change. This is a flaunt of the dynasty OUR government has become. Office appointees being reviewed by others who are in the same game. The sad thing is Americans will watch as they watch the oscars. Not thinking of the divided classes, and where their next meal will come from.

We allow Our reps. to live like royality as we suffer as peasants. Not only do we not cry out against it, we supprot it and then wonder why we are where we are.

I see a going theme here. The more corrupt you are, the more qualified you are to be part of the new presidental cabinet! Am I surprised? Nope, Obama had already shown that he's not a judgemental person during the campaign when his past associates were being drug out of the dumpster. How admirable. He's just a lucky sort of guy that still had a long list of the same to bring with him to Washington.
Too bad the Gov of IL got in trouble, so that he was not a viable possibility for a position. He would have made a fine addition to this motley group...

                "DEMOCRITES"
Hypocrite Democrats = DEMOCRITES, fits well doesn't?

By the way, IGNORANCE is no excuse when breaking laws.

I only wish I could not pay any of my taxes, then when I get caught, I'll just say, I did realize I had to pay taxes. Do ya think the IRS would give me a break on that. NO WAY! But since this guy is a Democrite, he will get a pass, watch and see. Anyone else getting sick of this hypocrisy that we have to face ever day, I know I sure the hell am getting sick and tired of it!

                "REPUBLICRITES"

Hypocrite Republicans=REPUBLICRITES, fits well, doesn't it?

Although, after 8 years of the Bush Administration, (the model for the Modern Republican Party) they were not as guilty of hiding their hypocrisy.

The Bush Administration simply BULLYIED their way through one hypocrisy after another ... and said to the nation ... if you ain't with us, you are against us.

                And you know what?

The American people finally got sick of the Morally Vacant Hypocrisy of the Right ... and everywhere you look across America ... Right Wing legislators have been tossed out of office.

I'm willing to give Obama a chance.

                Why?

Because I'm a Patriotic AMERICAN first.... a Centrist second.
                .

Saddly, you missed the news for the last year. Even Hillary complained about media bias. But then, she lied too I guess. Even talking to my friends who were big BO fans (including those who worked for his campaign), they admitted that they had no idea what McCain stood for since they NEVER heard from him. That is the media loveaffair... Did they love him years ago? Maybe. But do you realize that McCain was running this time not GWB? Probably not since that message never made it through the iron curtain of media.

Even in previous debates on here, people on your side have defended the news blackout by saying that Hill and BO were the story and McCain wasn't. They almost never disagree that McCain was not allowed a voice. They just admit it, say they think this was the right decision and move on.

And luckily the news was wililng to point out, ad noseum, that BO was black. That way he could pretend to run, not as a black candidate but as a Democrat, while making sure the news that he was black still got out. Nice, neat little package.

Oh I saw a lot of news coverage of McCain during the campaign. McCain was on trying to say he was no Bush after endorsing all his policies by stating how strong the economy was a few months before it collapsed and Palin accusing Obama of being a terrorist because he sat on the same committee as Ayers. He was on many talk shows so any comments of a lack of media coverage of McCain only shows that you can't get your nose out of FOX's posterior.

It appears that the defense of President-elect Obama's hypocrisy is conducted by referring to George W. Bush, John McCain, and Republicans in general.

Obama said these people were the "problem", and that electing him would be a change from the Washington politics of old. Yet, now that he is nominating people with corrupt and troubled backgrounds, many people seem to suggest that it is ok because President Bush did it.

Was this what Obama meant by unifying our country?

By the way, I will never understand how Democrats in particular spent 8 years (justly) complaining about war, about the infringement of civil liberties, and unsound economics -- yet, are now apologizing for the cabinet picks, the war in afghanistan, and warrantless spying.

Well if it isn't the sour grapes committee out in full force!Given the pool of people Obama has to pick from, he would be hard pressed to find anyone that hasn't been tainted. Remember, all those big time money handlers are dirty. In this case he has to pick one of the dirty ones, dust him off, and use him anyway.

What is the most sure way to wake up, - splashed by a bucket of cold water, or have a bugle blast in your ear?

To listen to the right-wing sound alarms over hypocrisy,
is cold-water and bugle blast together .
We should listen; they know the bitter price of hypocrisy, and they warn us to avoid the fate that swallowed their dignity and pride.

                    The appointment should be reconsidered.

                    If we support hypocrites we become hypocrites;
                    and Propeller supporters of Obama will begin sounding like [ insert name of right-wing propeller poster here ];
at worst we could even begin talking like [insert right-wing propeller poster here ].

And the threat of that should wake anyone up .
