That's why I find it so abhorrent that George W. Bush handed out millions to America's wealthiest ... just because a few of them had their hand out.
I think we need to wean the Wealthy off Welfare ... for their own moral salvation.

I appreciate your comments. I was thinking along that same line when I was reading this story. We have a country full of sinners and it starts at the top (by example). The tax-payers and consumers are the sacrificial goats paying the price for these sins.

Even if it's out of desperation? Would you be beneath begging if you were down and out, and milling through the streets with no where to go? No place to sleep? Maybe you find stealing more dignified.
I should know, I did a little of both when I ran away from home at 15, and had to do something in order to survive out in the streets. -

I'm drawing a blank thinking of arguments for or against the idea, not a condition I'm used to
Is it a sin to go hungry? Is it a sin to get food handouts from a church?
Is the church perpetuating sinful behavior?

I agree begging is a sin!!!! Just look at what the financial banks did after Paulson begged, we can't find out where one cent of our tax money went. Now they want more!!! The auto industry is begging and I hear there is a lot more coming to Washington with their hands out begging for bail outs.

I don't know if begging is evil or not. I do know that I almost never refuse to give a handout as don't know for sure what the real problem is and I don't like to see people hurting. I can't read minds so I don't know which ones are really in need and which ones aren't. Maybe I'm doing wrong but I have to do what feels right to me.

It is not for us to judge others. Many "Christians" don't believe in this anymore and think it is their duty to judge others and report to God their findings either in nightly pray or maybe when they hit the Pearly Gates to ensure entrance. I doubt I will make it to Heaven with these righteous Christians.
I have given to the needy also, but usually by taking them to a nearby restaurant for a meal or buying them groceries. I have only been turned down once.

There are two types of beggars, those who do it out of desperation, and those who do it as a profession.

Years ago when I was a teen, my buddy and I ran across a guy with dark glasses on, sitting on the main drag downtown, selling pencils quietly singing and rattling his pencil cup. We stopped and gave him some money and got into a very pleasant conversation with him, mostly about the misfortune that had brought him to that street. We felt for him.
That night my buddy and I got boozed up as some teens probably still do to this day, and lo and behold we ran into the unfortunate blind man, who looked amazingly different and could see as good as a cat at night. He had drank a couple too many.
When we confronted him, he bought us one and we had a good time finding out that there is a beggar colony that he belonged to and that begs as a profession. This was in the early fifty's and he told us that he worked about 6 months per year and brought in more than $100,000 in those six months.
But there are also the real unfortunates, and the alcoholics who truly are down and need help.
I go under the adage that my intent to help has nothing to do with whether the guy is a fake or real. -

Obama has asked for and he is still president-elect. I am incensed he is about to become
president and he is not constitutionally eligible
because the issue of his birth certificate has
not been resolved. The Supreme Court had a
tiger by its tail and no plan or back up plan
for dealing with his teeth. There is talk
already of amending the Constitution so he can
have a third term and a fourth term. God help
us all.

There are those who take advantage of others, in just about every situation in life, it would be nice to weed out the abusers, but all you can do is use your best judgment,if I was to see someone begging, and then finding out later it's a con job, see them out 'working it' again, I'll turn them in. Last year some guy in a nice suit came walking up to us asked for a few bucks for gas, he had a gas can, said he ran out of gas, didn't live in the area and left his wallet at home. We gave him a few $, and my Son even drove him up to the gas station. We saw him several other times after that over weeks, doing the same thing. We turned him in. I certainly don't mind helping when I can, but not to those that are scamming people.

We have sub zero temps the last few day, our 1 shelter is maxed out nearly double, I can't imagine being homeless and there are many worthy charities begging for help,a sin? I think not. -
