    FTA:
Meanwhile, about Mr. Obama: while it’s probably in his short-term political interests to forgive and forget, next week he’s going to swear to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” That’s not a conditional oath to be honored only when it’s convenient.

And to protect and defend the Constitution, a president must do more than obey the Constitution himself; he must hold those who violate the Constitution accountable. So Mr. Obama should reconsider his apparent decision to let the previous administration get away with crime. Consequences aside, that’s not a decision he has the right to make.

The last sentence sums it up perfectly.
If you catch someone shoplifting of course its your responsibility to turn them in. If you don't you make yourself an accessory to any further crimes that they commit.
Does anyone believe that Bush is going to cease benefitting from the machinery of corruption that has been put in place by his cronies during the last horribly long 8 years?
Paul Krugman deserves another Nobel for crime prevention if he can make this stick!

if obama lets bush walk, then he's no solution. he's just more of the same old problem.

high crimes and misdemeanors and the corruption that makes it all possible

Now wait a minute. In an ideal world, yes, Obama (or more accurately, the Democratic-controlled Congress) would hold Bush, Cheney, Addington, Yoo, Feith, Gonzales and many others accountable. And I find it hard to argue with the moral rectitude of Krugman's column.

Unfortunately, this is not an ideal world. You all know what the Republican response would be no matter how much evidence of malfeasance was brought to light--and you all know how well the Republican propaganda machine works, and how public opinion can turn on a dime if investigations of the Bush adminstration appeared to be political in nature.

I'm not certain Obama and the Democrats should just "move on." But though the consequences of allowing these criminals to get away with what they have are dire, I also believe the consequences of extreme partisans like Gingrich or Palin gaining power in 2012 could be worse. I'm just not certain, and I'm looking at the best interests of the country for the long term.

The question in my mind, is: Which is worse?

            Precisely.
There is also the question as to whether revenge is a dish that should be eaten cold.

Personally, I'd like to see the international community do something. I know that's punting, but it'd be good to see the criminals condemned, whether they wind up behind bars or not...and I'm afraid of political recriminations if it's done internally.
