Who Should Obama Look to for Advice?: Jimmy Carter »

Posted By populist 11 months ago in Political News

1 of 1

Instead of just sending Jimmy Carter on peace and humanitarian missions overseas, Obama should invite Carter to a one-on-one session in the Oval Office and learn from the modern master at practicing the founders’ preferred policy of military restraint. Obama might also learn that domestic benefits might accrue from eliminating U.S. overextension abroad—for example, improvement in the nation’s finances and economy.

Today's politicians need not seek advice. They have all the answers while providing no solutions.

I'm sure Jimmy "too many Jews" Carter will be a welcome guest in the Obama White House....along with Louis Farrakhan.

          are you serious????

You want Obama to take advice from the Jimmy Carter who used to be President? The one who just holed up in the Rose Garden for 444 days rather than actually doing something when those thugs held our citizens hostage? The one who presided over the previously worst recession since the great depression? The one whose solution to the oil embargo was to wear sweaters?

The one, who after brokering the Egyptian/Israeli peace treaty has since turned into one of the biggest anti-Semitic anti-Zionists on the planet?

          THAT Jimmy Carter?

yeah, that sounds like a really good plan....

That would be about the stupidest think he could do.

Carter never met an Arab sheik he didn't fall in love with. Remember when he accepted millions of dollars to the Carter Center from the same Saudi sheik that Rudy Guliani sent the money back to and refused to accept?

Carter is an Israel=bashing Arab apologist... last person we need with any influence in the White House.

Of course Carter had many problems as president, but any serious conservative should respect several critical accomplishments. First, Carter deregulated the trucking and airline industries. Those were the beginning of the modern deregulation trend, and they remain today perhaps the most clearly successful examples of deregulation in the U.S. Second, Carter appointed Paul Volcker as chair of the Fed. Volcker was the key figure in taming inflation, and hence is due much of the credit for the prosperity of the 80s, once the Volcker-induced recession was over. Not to mention that a serious conservative should respect someone who served in the Navy for many years.

What were the effects of Carter policies? From 1978 to 1983, US demand for oil dropped by over 20%. By 1983, OPEC was cutting back oil production in an attempt to maintain prices. By 1985, OPEC had lost its power to control oil price. It would be 2000 before US oil demand returned to 1978 levels.

The problem for Big Oil was losing Big money. Starting in 1981 at a peak of 324 oil refineries, Big Oil closed the oldest and most inefficient refineries to reach a total of 149 US refineries in 2007. Carter's energy policy of conservation, efficiency and oil alternatives was successful by almost every standard except oil company profits Record profits did not return until the latest oil shock.

Carter's way of making war, like Clinton's, consists of the surgical suicide mission. They try win military victory on the sly by demanding that the best America has go in in small unsupported numbers and somehow save the day. These men are too cowardly to actually launch a millitary opperation. Instead they put lives of men at exagerated risk to give them plausable deniability in the unlikely event of success.
