If Obama changes the way unemployment is counted before bush took people off the figures after 6 months, claiming they were no longer unemployed, I'd venture to say we're at 8.9 right now.

we'll fit right in with the rest of the other third world nations - if 8.4 is the average imagine what the highest cities are at, i know madison is a few points under so other cities would be a few over to average out

I am sure the real unemployment by the end of 2009 will be over 10%

I have high hopes for our country, and now we have a president who is welling and ready to repair what he can from the damage that America has faced, I truley beleive hes going to do his best to repair our damaged country. We are in a bad place at this time and its going to take a while, but we'll make it with Gods helping hand guiding Obama all the way.

Der Bush had God's helping hand, he was more vocal about it than most presidents, and he left the country in a shambles.

That is better than what Reagan inherited from Carter. Things got worse before Reagan's policies took effect and the economy turned around.

So when things get worse, thanks to Bush, before they get better, you'll man up and admit Obama's doing a great job, right?

When things get worse, thanks to "Washington", I'll admit that I was right. When Obama shrinks the size of Gov't, rolls back the corporate taxes, cuts payroll taxes and lets Americans do what we do best; produce, then I'll admit he's doing a good job.

Bush didn't do any of my suggestions either.
Are you suggesting Obama is going to:

                      1. Shrink the size of Gov't..........................1 trillion dollar stimulus is not shrinking

                      2. Roll back corporate taxes.....................Yeah right!

                      3. Cut payroll taxes.....................................Never happen

If you believe he will, then you are living under a rock somewhere.

We hold Obama to the same standard that you held Reagan and other Republicans. It happened under them so it is their fault. The tune has changed now that a Democrat has problem that he has to face. You libs liked to quote the bad times under Reagon and blame him and not Carter so it is tit for tat. Obama is the man so everything is his fault. Just like the housing bubble was Bush's fault for not fixing the Democrat changes in the banking laws especially for Fannie and Freddy.

In a way it does go back to Obama. He was in bed with ACORN and trained them and sued Citicorp for them to enforce the mortgages for poor blacks. ACORN went to congress ans got lucky in 1992 and the laws went into force in 1995. Up went the bubble and in 2006 down it came. Now he gets to fix what he participated in changing. Good luck Obama.

I have a 1984 Forbes magazine that accurately predicted the 90's economic boom that Clinton gets credit for. There is a problem to the trickle down economy, it is when the very top stops getting money to trickle.

In my town the largest employer Meridian Boats shut down laying off 800 people. Meridian Boats built boats "starting" at $100,000

High taxes on the rich cause that. They hide their money from taxes and down goes the economy. Lower the taxes and out it comes working for them and being taxed. More money for businesses and for the government.

Reagan's policies are still hurting the working class. He put taxes on unemployment benefits that are still in place today. He felt that unemployment was a paid vacation. If you have ever collected unemployment you know that it is a far cry from a paid vacation.
He gave all of the tax breaks to the rich and the corporations. He is the most over rated president I have seen in my life time.

Who ran congress at that time? Not the Republicans. But you blame Reagan all the same. I remember him fighting that issue and losing.

Your memory is wrong. Reagan hurt the working class....big time. He is quoted as saying that unemployment benefits should be taxed so that people will look for a job quicker. And he gave huge tax breaks to the rich.

Obama has already faced a his first real challenge... reciting the oath of office. He didn't do that to well.

Obama is brining nothing new nor any "change". It just the same old failed Cater and Clinton polices. If the Carter people weren't the walking dead he would be rehiring the same as he is rehiring the Clinton people.

I found it to be really strange that Obama screwed up on the wording of the oath. That's a hell of a place to not say what you're suppose to say! So, doesn't that mean that his oath is no good. Wouldn't it be like in a marriage ceremony, if one doesn't say "I DO"? seems to me that would mean it isn't a legally done deal!? Obama stumble around and did not say the entire oath as it's written and suppose to be said. In essence, he did not actually say "I DO" Seems really weird to me!? If it were Bush who screwed up something like that, it would be front page news for days on end. He would have been criticized and trashed to death over it.

Did I vote for this guy? No. Do I want him to be the best president this country has ever had? Absolutely; but that's according to my definition of what "the best" would entail, not Bill Ayers'. I want a president who promotes self reliance, who honors the concept of the individual, who brings us more economic liberty, who recognizes the danger of big government, and who will be an inspiration to millions of people who, before today, thought that their future was out of their hands. As my father used to say; "People in hell want ice water." But we'll see.

President Obama will have to renege on most of his promises.
In the campaign he spoke as a ruler, today he finds himself the least powerful of the three bodies of power. Not all the democrats are of his ilk. Most of the dems who were seated in 2006 were not bleeding heart liberals, and will not roll over, and play dead.

I would say the rate is closer to 12% because of the homeless and Americans not on the census role, but we all hope for an improvement in about 2011 right now the nation is going threw a metamorphism of epic adjustment and industry is consolidating and reinventing themselves !

It´s not all about money, when it comes to end up with this horrible crisis. Financial support is necessary, there´s no doubt, but what is really missing is a psychological factor: it´s trust! Barack Obama won´t rebuild in a few days, what bankers or investors without responsibility and corrupt managers destroyed, but he is the one to bring back some courage, strength and self-confidence. If it is true that the financial markets are based on psychology far more than on pure economy, he´s the right man for this difficult job!

From the way things are going, I predict things will be much worse then what their predicting here. The first round of bail-outs didn't work. Right now, if you add all the bail-outs up, including the $1+ TRILLION DOLLARS that Obama wants to add to the already $750 Billion, were talking over 2 trillion dollars. Obama is talking he wants this new round of funds right away. If he gets it and uses it, we will know in just a few months if it's working or not. If it looks like it's not working, or in fact it is not working, then we are screwed. That will mark the point that our economy is not going to recover and that will be when true panic sets in. Then we go into a depression. So, judging from that great possibility, I'd say by years end we are at a MUCH higher rate of unemployment then just 8.4% or so. More like 20% or higher. I hope that's not the case, but things ain't lookin' so good are they?

The number of work at home people are increasing everyday. The unemployment rate is also increasing. Times are tough; tight finances are driving up the need for payday loans. Layoffs are causing more people to have to collect unemployment every day. I got laid off in an industry that was failing nationwide. It left me wondering what I should do next. I knew staying in the same industry wasn’t a good idea. This article from my payday loans' source talks about the best careers to start right now, the best businesses to start and the best states to start them in. Turns out higher education and health care are pretty much recession-proof. Click here to read more: http://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/2009/01/09...

People need to wake up and blame Bush and his wreckless administration for the unemployment rate. My company was acquired and my job was lost under Bush. We have no one else to blame for our terrible economy than him. No excuses.

We've allowed our selves to be ruled, controled.
We depend on someone else to solve our problems ,take care of our needs.
We let them take advantage of us.
We gave them the power over us.
                                          We've exchanged Freedom for convience,security.
                                          We're controled by money.
they use it to keep us enslaved.
To rob us of our Freedom.
                                          Manipulating us with it.
                                          Their were no recessions.
When man lived freely off the land.
Before governments and empires controled and ruled our lives.
Their are tribes today in the Amazon that are not controled by money or governments.
Proof that man once existed without these needs.
